Chocolate of the Day

Chocolarder
Rose Gin Truffles, Tinkure Cornish Gin
Ashaninka, Peru 72% Dark Chocolate

Calories: 241 calories (per label) in 6 truffles (50 g.)
Cost: 16.50 (British Pounds) + shipping for box of 12 truffles
Purchased from: Chocolarder, online order

Welcome to Day #8 of Chocolate and Gin Theme Week, and Day #1 of Chocolate and Flowers Theme Week.

Today's Rose Gin Truffles were made by Chocolarder Craft Chocolate Makers (Falmouth, Cornwall, UK). The company offers a variety of bean-to-bar chocolates--both single origin and several infused with local flavors. (I really enjoyed the Wild Gorse Flower bar.)

The Rose Gin in these truffles was from the maker's friends (and relative neighbors) at Tinkture Cornish Gin. And, from further afield, the 72% dark chocolate was made using Ashaninka, Peru cacao beans.

Aroma
Aroma notes for these Limited Edition truffles included: pleasant chocolate; faint, freshly baked sweet (yeast) bread; faint floral and faint fruit (sweet lemon peel, and other more faint/diffuse acidic sweet-tart fruits).

The aroma notes signaled a dark chocolate with depth and subtle complexity--not too dark, more of a middle ground 70+%-er with faint fruit notes. However, (as often happens) the chocolate flavors were stronger than the aroma.

Flavors
These Rose Gin truffles captured the extremes that can be found in a single cacao pod (from sweet and light to bitter and dark). The same tremendous range also exists in manufactured chocolates: from sweet, flavor-infused white chocolates to bold, roasted, bitter, ultra-dark chocolates). Although you're usually not experiencing these extremes in the same chocolate or same bite.

Each generously-sized Rose Gin truffle was lightly dusted with cocoa. Under that light dusting, the thick dark shell and the light filling were poles apart. The firm, 72% cacao dark shell tasted slightly bitter, bold, roasted, and somewhat acidic (citrus). In contrast, the white center was sweet, soft (buttery and fluffy), with delicate, floral (rose-scented) notes.

Since the theme this week is chocolate and gin, one can argue gin and tonic cocktails (with the bitterness coming from lemon peel and tonic and sweetness coming from syrups, fruit and/or juices) provide a refreshing flavor contrast. However, those thoroughly blended cocktails don't include the potentially eclipsing elements of dark cacao.

I had to re-taste these truffles several times to sort out how I felt about this confluence of opposing forces. Was the dark chocolate shell too thick and overpowering for the more delicate center? Or was this like the two powerfully authentic rivers (one dark, one light) in Brazil that join the mighty Amazon River perhaps? The colors eventually blend together downstream, but they don't harmonize all at once.

I can't reverse the course of a river; but I do know changing the tasting order of different flavor courses can make a big difference.

The (tasting) order of things...
I recommend eating these chocolates inside out, from light to dark, instead of dark to light.

When I cut these truffles in half, and scooped out and ate (with a tiny ice cream tasting spoon) the sweet filling first, it was a very different, more harmonious, tasting experience. I loved the rose gin flavored ganache filling; and I could also taste more of the chocolate nuances (a mellow nuttiness, less bitterness) afterwards. Reversing the order seemed to magically reveal/restore the true, thick chocolate shell flavor: a well-balanced, bold 72% cacao chocolate (vs. a harsher 90%-er).

Thank you to the makers for creating these limited edition, gin-inspired truffles. I deeply appreciate inspired flavors; and complex, balanced chocolates. While I was tasting these filled chocolates, I recalled eating cacao fruit and seeds in the middle of a temperate rain forest, and pondered the balancing forces in nature--and in food and drink. Chocolate truffles are rarely this thought-provoking.

Maker's tasting notes: "Bright, sweet rose ending with a lingering, warming gin melting into fruity dark chocolate"

Ingredients: "Dark Chocolate (Cocoa beans, Unrefined sugar), Rose gin fondant (Unrefined sugar, Glucose, Tinkure Rose Gin, sea salt)"

Allergen-related information: Made in a kitchen that handles dairy and tree nuts, in our Falmouth factory, Cornwall..."

That's it - Dark Chocolate Covered Fruit Truffles - Apple + Strawberries + Dark Chocolate - Feb. 17, 2020

Chocolate of the Day:

Dark Chocolate Covered Fruit Truffles
Apples + strawberries + dark chocolate
Good
Weight: 1.83 oz. (52 g.) in total package
Calories: 150 calories in 1 package
Cost: $3.19 for 1 package
Purchased from: CVS/pharmacy, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #4 of Chocolate and Strawberries Theme Week.

Today's Dark Chocolate Covered Fruit Truffles (bites) were from That's it Nutrition, LLC (Los Angeles, CA). The company name "that's it" refers to the pared down ingredients list in their snack offerings made with plant-based, Non-GMO ingredients* free of most common allergens.

The five small "fruit truffles" in this package were made of just three ingredients: apples, strawberries and dark chocolate. A dark chocolate shell surrounded a pure fruit blend center, that was neither too dry or too moist. This refreshingly light and natural tasting vegan snack was made without preservatives, gluten or soy.

I look forward to trying the company's new Sea Salt Organic Dark Chocolate + Fig Truffles offering in the future.

*Ingredients: apples, strawberries, dark chocolate (unsweetened chocolate, organic sugar, cocoa butter)

Trader Joe's - Belgian Truffle Ballotin Box - 2 pcs. - Jan. 12, 2020

Chocolate(s) of the Day:

Trader Joe's
Belgian Truffle Ballotin Box

2.) White chocolate covered with milk chocolate and feuilletine* filling - Good

Purchased from: N/A - holiday gift (Trader Joe's)

Welcome to Day #5 of Chocolate and Hazelnut Theme Week.

I enjoyed the last two filled chocolate truffles (pictured at right) in an 8-piece holiday assortment box today.

Filled chocolate confections can be a tad sweet, but hazelnuts and other nuts can help balance out the sweetness. And it's fun to mix it up every once in awhile, especially during the darker winter months when sugar seems a bit more appealing.**

*Feuilletine denotes small bits of wafer mixed into the chocolate filling. And these bits usually contain wheat.

**Generally, I eat at least a piece of a high-percentage single origin bar each day. Living in a high-percentage, high-flavor world is enjoyable, even if one has to be more careful about ingesting too much theobromine (a stimulant in chocolate), and sugar, late in the day before sleeping.

Welcome to Day #4 of Chocolate and Hazelnut Theme Week.

Today's three Belgian truffles came from an 8-piece assortment Ballotin Box that I received as a holiday gift from a friend.

The first truffle sampled was shaped like a leaf, that enveloped a tasty hazelnut chocolate ganache/filling. The second "snail" shaped truffle had a milk chocolate filling with what I'm guessing were tiny bits of wafer (feuilletine style).* The third chocolate (pictured at bottom left of photo) was filled with soft, flowing caramel.

*Those who are very sensitive to wheat might want to sample a small bite of each truffle first before taking a larger bite.

Welcome to Day #9 of Holiday Tea and Spirits Theme Week. Today's tea truffles were a delight to eye and palette.

Thank you to Katy for this delicious holiday gift. And thank you to Merissa at Integrity Cacao in Southern California for making beautiful, healthy and delicious chocolates.

All the Integrity Cacao truffles sampled today were relatively smooth and moist with uniform rich chocolate flavor, and were not too sweet (thank you!).

The Matcha tea truffles had a balanced green tea flavor note and topping them with a dose of powdered bright green matcha gave them a lovely spring green in color feast for the eyes in this gray winter month.

The Chai tea spice truffles were dusted with a bright yellow dose of turmeric, which added beautiful golden color, and a slight turmeric (an agreeably strong spicy root with a faint but balanced bitter) note.

Note: the Rose truffles in the middle (with the attractive fuschia pink color and rose buds on top) were sampled but not "counted" in today's entry.

This package of three Organic, Raw, Dairy Free, Gluten Free, Soy Free, Vegan and Paleo Friendly rounds were comprised of soft, almost velvety, chocolate truffle centers (organic cacao powder, cacao butter and coconut oil), and were coated in bits of toasted almond.

The truffles were sweetened with organic coconut nectar; and they were sweet without being overly so.

Celebrating 12 Years of Chocolate - Chocolate Hazelnut Trail Truffles - Sept. 15, 2018

Calories: 150 calories in 3 truffles
Cost: $6.59 for 1 package
Purchased from: Country Sun Natural Foods, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #5 of Celebrating 12 Years of Chocolate Series.

Today's Chocolate Hazelnut Truffles were from Trail Truffles (Draper, UT).

Like most other items that contain dates, these truffles have a moist, naturally slightly acidic fruit sweetness and cohesiveness. However, the hazelnut and chocolate did participate in this blend of  flavors. And their texture was great for a hike outside.

The Trail Truffles were taken up to a park in the hills to enjoy a great view of San Francisco Bay. They had a bit of oily sheen to them.; but they did not melt or fall apart.

I found this added extra virgin coconut oil* very helpful as an active person. (And the founders at Trail Truffles are active trail users from what I read.) A little fat is great for breakfast before a walk or hike—to stave off hunger before lunch.

Ingredients: dates, hazelnuts, organic cacao powder, organic coconut nectar (syrup evaporated), organic extra virgin coconut oil, sea salt

Calories: 200 calories in 4 pieces
Cost: $3.99 for 1 box
Purchased from: Safeway, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #3 of Celebrating 12 Years of Chocolate Series.

Many chocolate confections are called truffles; but there's nothing like well-made, traditional truffles (called so because of their resemblance to the treasured, roundish, fungus by the same name)—made from a short list of high-quality ingredients (chocolate, butter, cream, cocoa powder).

Today's O Organics* Chocolate French Truffles were relatively close to this concept in appearance, taste and texture. They were made with chocolate and dusted with cocoa powder. However, coconut oil and cocoa butter were used instead of butter and cream; and soy lecithin was part of the mix.**

These truffles had a cocoa aroma and were soft, creamy and chocolatey. They had a very pleasing mouth-feel and melt that was almost velvety.

*O Organics is an Albertsons/Safeway brand
** Ingredients: organic cocoa mass, organic coconut oil, organic cane sugar, organic cocoa butter, organic cocoa powder, soy lecithin (emulsifier).

All three flavors were worth sampling. And a side-by-side, blind tasting was enjoyable and informative.

Welcome to Day #7 of Chocolate and Surprise Theme Week.

Custom Colored Thank You Gift
Sometimes surprise gifts just happen to be chocolate, like today's first chocolate item. This glass jar of specially customized M and M chocolate candies had blue and white candy shells, with images of a raccoon and the organization name printed on them. They were gifts to volunteers at the Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo.

The un-customized/traditional version of Mars dark chocolate M and M chocolate candies appeared years ago on Chocolate Banquet. So the hunt was on for a second chocolate item.

Fortunately, a large canister of truffles that had been hiding in the chocolate vault was discovered, making today a surprise chocolate double header.

Alaus Mathez truffles

These Cacao Powdered Truffles (made in France) were closer to traditional truffles than most filled chocolate confections marketed as truffles.

Summer sun is great for beach weather, but it can ruin chocolate. And these truffles had survived some record heat before being purchased and stored in the vault. The light dusting of cocoa powder had darkened a bit. But, the flavor and texture were surprisingly rich, smooth, satisfying and authentic, i.e. relatively unaffected by the heat.

Lindt and Sprungli - Gingerbread Milk Chocolate Truffles - Jan. 15, 2018

Welcome to Day #2 of Chocolate and Surprise Theme Week.

It's always a surprise to discover holiday-related chocolates in mid-January. Normally they evaporate by New Year's Day. However, chocolate and gingerbread are favorites here, all year long.

Today's Limited Edition Gingerbread Milk Chocolate Truffles were created by Lindt and Sprungli (Switzerland), and distributed by Lindt and Sprungli U.S. (Stratham, NH).

These individually-wrapped, round milk chocolate gingerbread truffles were tasty and satisfying. The fillings inside the milk chocolate outer shells were creamy and smooth, and flecked with tiny crunchy bits. The gingerbread flavor was subtle and authentic.

Note to those who avoid gluten: These truffles did contain barley malt powder.

Chocolate of the Day:

Breyers Gelato Indulgence
Salted Caramel Truffle Gelato

Calories: 190 calories in 1/2 cup serving

Purchased from: Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #4 of Chocolate and Caramel Theme Week.

Today's Salted Caramel Truffle "Gelato Indulgences" from Breyers (part of Unilever) was a frozen dessert meant for unrepentant sinners. The attractively sculpted, rich, creamy dessert was loaded with sugar, corn syrup and heavy cream.

Tiny chocolate caramel truffles and swirls of caramel on top (visible through a transparent lid) enhanced the appearance and sense of decadence. A small serving is likely to satisfy a caramel craving.

While labeled "Gelato Indulgences," this dessert might be more closely related to very rich ice cream. (It's marketed (to adults) as being "way beyond ice cream.") But, it also had a certain loft or airiness to it, allowing it to tip the scales at only 190 calories per 1/2 cup serving.

Welcome to Day #1 of Chocolate and Caramel Theme Week.

Today's Fleur de Sel Caramel filled chocolates from Alexander's Patisserie (Mountain View, CA) looked like newly discovered micro-planets with swirling blue and purple atmospheres, that had come to rest in a fancy black chocolate box.

These colorful, round chocolate shells were filled with authentic, velvety, flowing salt caramel and chocolate. Delicious.

NeoCocoa - Tart Cranberry truffles - Dec. 19, 2017

Chocolate of the Day:

NeoCocoa
Tart Cranberry

Weight: .8 oz. (23 g.) / 2.4 oz. (69 g.) total box of 6 pieces
Calories: 120 calories (estimate) in 2 pieces
Cost: $13.00 for 1 box of 6 pieces
Purchased from: La Cocina, San Francisco Ferry Building, San Francisco, CA

Welcome to Day #7 of Chocolate, Fruit and Nuts Theme Week.

How does one blend the delicious, slightly tart flavor of cranberry and orange during the holidays into chocolate? This combination can be found in relish, sauce, salads, energy bars and confections, but is harder to find in chocolates.

Fortunately, the busy elves at local San Francisco Bay Area chocolate company, NeoCocoa, made Tart Cranberry flavored truffles this season. These had well-balanced cranberry and bittersweet chocolate flavor with a hint of orange. The company's cube-shaped "hearts of truffles" were velvety soft truffle insides without the usual hard, glossy outer chocolate shells.

These chocolates shared a holiday snack plate with two festively-flavored snack fruit and nut bars: a Sahale Snacks Cranberry Almond with Black Pepper and Orange Zest bar, and a Sahale Tangerine Cashew with Vanilla and Mango bar. The black pepper added a little extra holiday accent sparkle.

Three Twins - Organic Caramel Truffle Swirl ice cream - Sept. 11, 2017

Cost: $1.99 (estimate) for 1 container
Purchased from: Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #6 of Chocolate and Caramel Theme Week.

Today marked the 11th year (4,035+ days) of featuring a different daily chocolate. The occasion was celebrated at dawn this morning with a new chocolate item, before a hike in the redwoods.

Have I run out of new chocolate items to try? Not even close.

The last few weeks have included some of the hottest days on record in the Bay Area. Perfect time for some frozen chocolate and caramel items, such as this one.

Three Twins (Petaluma, CA) is one of my favorite brands of ice cream. Their Madagascar Vanilla, Dad's Cardamom and other flavors have been wonderful.

Traditionally the company's ice cream flavors have contained a short list of quality ingredients without vegetable gums, stabilizers and emulsifiers which many consumers have gotten used to. Long may this tradition continue.

Today's organic Caramel Truffle ice cream (vanilla ice cream base with a caramel swirl) included a mix-in of tiny chocolate caramel "truffles." I think I would have preferred flecks of dark or milk chocolate and salted caramel, but the micro peanut butter* cup-shaped truffles were cute.

I also enjoyed a few slices of buttery, rich, homemade, caramel on the side.

*There were no peanut butter ingredients in this ice cream.

Phi Kind - Cherry Almond Butter truffles - Mar. 16, 2017

Chocolate of the Day:

Phi Kind
Cherry Almond Butter
Good - Good +
Weight: .565 oz. (16 g.) / 1.13 oz. (32 g.) in 1 box
Calories: 80 calories (estimate) in 2 pieces
Cost: $7.95 for 1 box of 4 pieces
Purchased from: Seed Bank, Petaluma, CA

Welcome to Day #6 of Chocolate and STUVWXYZ Theme Week. Today, "x" is for xylitol, specifically birch xylitol, a sweetener for that serves as a sugar substitute.

Xylitol is naturally occurring "sugar" alcohol found in most plants, fruits and vegetables. Commercially available xylitol is typically made from corn cobs or birch bark.

This box of lightly-sweetened Cherry Almond Butter truffles from Phi Kind (Santa Rosa, CA) was sweetened with a blend of birch xylitol, sunchoke syrup and stevia (from the stevia plant).

Phi Kind founder Jonathan (Jon) Pantalis is committed to making organic, zero-glycemic index sweetened chocolates that are dairy, gluten and sugar free, vegan, paleo and raw. (To accomplish the latter, a low-heat stone-grinding process is used.)

These Phi Kind truffles had authentic, mild cherry flavor, and a slightly crunchy texture (likely from cacao nib and almond bits), without health concerns that arise from some chocolate truffles.

Ingredients: Cocoa nibs, Non-GMO birch xylitol, almonds, dried cherries, sunchoke syrup, coconut, vanilla, sea salt, stevia

Note: I bought these at the Seed Bank in downtown Petaluma, CA. What a great concept. A seed company took over an older bank building with a beautiful interior. Worth a stop if you're in the area, even if you're not a gardener. Small, but nice selection of chocolates there too.

Purchased from: Lula's (shop), Monterey, CA

Welcome to Day #5 of Chocolate and STUVWXYZ Theme Week, the last in our chocolate alphabet series.

Today "w" stands for wine. With the proper pairing, wine and chocolate can make wonderful tasting companions. Or, one can infused chocolates with wine flavor, like today's Wine Truffles from Lula's Chocolates (Monterey, CA).

These attractively packaged box of four good-sized chocolates were made with pure dairy cream and "wine and natural flavorings."

The company's full name is Lula Lund's Chocolates, LLC.
Lula's founder and owner, Scott Lund, named the company after his grandmother Lula, who also made confections and toffees.

If you're visiting in the Monterey or Carmel area in California, Lula's shops are worth a stop. (Their Baja toffee is a great take a traditional toffee; it's spicy enough to be flavorful without being too hot.)

Two Moms in the Raw - Almond Butter Truffles - Feb. 17, 2017

Chocolate of the Day:

Two Moms in the Raw, Inc.
Cacao Almond - Almond Butter Truffles
Good
Weight: 1 oz. (28.3 g.) / 2 oz. (57 g.) in total package of 4 pieces
Calories: 140 calories in 2 pieces
Cost: $3.19 for 1 package of 4 pieces
Purchased from: Whole Foods, Redwood City, CA

Welcome to the opening day (Day #1) of Chocolate and Almonds Theme Week.

Today I'm featuring Almond Butter Truffles from Two Moms in the Raw (Longmont, CO).

These Cacao Almond truffles, nestled in a small white tray, didn't leave me with the same sugar and chocolate buzz I get when I eat a solid, single origin bar. (And some of you will think this is great.)

Instead, these slightly chewy, coconut flavored, almost cake-like cacao "truffles" with tiny bits (I'm assuming these were almond bits) lacked the firmness, denseness and sweetness of many chocolates.

The sweet level (supplied by organic coconut syrup and date paste) in this bar was fine with me. However, if you're craving the dense cocoa butter fat that many chocolates contain, you might prefer a pure chocolate bar or other confection.

Today's Cacao Almond truffles were made with sprouted* ingredients, and were Certified Gluten Free, USDA Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified.

*Two Moms founders believe that scientific research suggests that "sprouted ingredients may increase bioavailability." The suggestion here is that it may be easier for your body to absorb nutrients in this form.

Queen Bee Gardens - Classic Cherry truffle - Jan. 4, 2017

Chocolate of the Day:

Queen Bee Gardens
Classic Cherry truffle

Weight: 1.4 oz. (39.6 g.) in 1 truffle
Calories: 205 calories (estimate) in 1 truffle
Cost: $3.00 (estimate) for 1 truffle
Purchased from: Beekind, Sebastopol, CA

Welcome to Day #4 of Chocolate and Cherries Theme Week.

Inside the sweet milk chocolate shell of today's Classic Cherry truffle from Queen Bee Gardens (Lovell, WY) lay a sweet secret.

The filling was honey-based. The texture was somewhere between a chewy caramel and a soft, creamy milk chocolate ganache; and it was accented with pieces of dried sweet-tart cherry.

Queen Bee Gardens makes a unique line of honey-based caramels, toffee, truffles and other confections.

I've considered putting a beehive in my backyard, but my neighborhood has become more dense, with bigger houses crowding in on each other. And, sadly, there are also fewer flowers and trees left.

I was fortunate to find this truffle at Beekind (Sebastopol, CA), a bee-themed store where you can experience side-by-side honey tastings or buy honey and other bee products/gifts as well as beekeeping supplies. And they even had a few hives in the backyard.

*While not certified gluten-free yet, Queen Bee Gardens "carries no products that contain wheat or gluten."
