ChocolateBet: January 19, 2007

Today I opted for cute packaging, and ate a Mint Chocolate "CoolDown" bar from Chocolate Crisis Center.

It was very good; it came in a nice small size; it had a clever name. And I purchased it (and a few others) at a great local bookstore (Keplers in Menlo Park) that has managed to stay alive over the past several years, when many other bookstores have faded from memory due in large part to competition from online book sellers and large chain stores, and high real estate/lease prices.

I guess a skinny cow might be popular with the diet crowd -- but aren't healthy cows kind of roundish around the mid-section, and not too bony? Well, someone must of liked the skinny cow because someone gave this name to a whole brand of frozen dairy dessert items (presumably with reduced fat content).

Today I tried a Skinny Cow (frozen fudge) bar. It was good; and only 100 calories. But I had to ask myself: Why did I eat one of these when it was so cold outside?

Today I had one piece of Cap Candy's (Harry Potter) Chocolate Frog (with Crisped Rice). The frog, which weighed .55 oz/16 g. was good. It was overpriced (even though it came with a "Wizard Card"); but then I did choose to buy it. This reminds me how much money must have poured into the Harry Potter-related empire over the past several years, and how I missed the last Harry Potter movie -- which I should probably try to see, before the next one comes out later this year. Years ago I read the first book with my daughter when it came out and first became popular. I think we finished the book, but I think by the time the first movie came out, she was thinking the series was too young for her. And so she left things Harry Potter behind her, with a dismissive wave...much as she'd done when she'd outgrown Barbie dolls or Beanie Babies. However, she did have a brief renewed interest in the subject when the Harry Potter branded jelly beans came out in disgusting flavors like ear wax, barf, grass, dirt, etc. Kids loved those. I'm happy to say that the chocolate frog was pretty plain in comparison.

The Z Cioccolatos chocolate shop in North Beach (San Francisco) makes some great fudge (and I am not usually a big fudge fan), and they also sell some wonderful big chocolate and nut creations. Today I had one of their milk chocolate almond paws. Yum (highest rating). This tasted homemade. Nuts, caramel, chocolate - wonderful.

I'm still working my way through the box of Kirkland Signature Belgian Chocolates that I bought in Half Moon Bay awhile back. Today I had 3 pieces:
1) Milk chocolate with a ganache and hazelnut paste
2) Dark chocolate with a "Mandarine" ganache
3) Dark chocolate with "butterscotch" caramel

They were good.

Today I ate one half of a Thornton's Dark Chocolate with Roasted Cocoa Nibs bar (about 40 grams worth). It was good, and about 210 calories for half a bar. I split this with my boyfriend.

Thornton's is a UK-based chocolate company. When I saw the Thornton's name, I remembered that I bought (can't remember where) a dark brown chocolate-scented t-shirt (with the saying "Man cannot live by chocolate alone" on the front, and "but woman can" on the back) years back. I still have it and enjoy wearing it as a nightshirt. And even though the chocolate scent started to disappear after the second trip through the washing machine, it was still a great gimmick.

Today I delved into the world of chocolate yogurt. I've always liked photos of little brown cows, and would love to see one in real life sometime. In their honor, I had one 6 oz./170 g. container of Brown Cow Chocolate Yogurt, with no artificial growth hormones. It was very good, especially with a few pecans thrown in. Total calories for the yogurt = 200 + about 100 calories for the pecans.

Today I at three different chocolate from a Kirkland Signature Belgian Chocolates assortment:

2) Milk chocolate (heart) with caramel
3) Dark Chocolate with a raspberry ganache

They were Very Good.

I ate 1 bag Mocha Magic Belgian Dark Covered Espresso Beans (2 oz./56.7 g) in the morning and at work. They were good. I hope the caffeine won't keep me up.
