I can tell it's good, when I eat 3/4 of a package of chocolate -- for breakfast.

Just when I thought I might have tried every chocolate born in the (San Francisco) Bay Area, I spoke to Rich and Amy at Draegers market. Thank you to Rich for helping me find the local brands in and amongst all the bars and boxes, in the store's impressively large chocolate display area.

These dark chocolate-covered hazelnut pieces were very nice. The fairly large box meant I could try these chocolates a few different ways -- plain, and then paired with various other food and drink items. For example, these went well with a little bit of homemade dried apricot pineapple jam. Thank you again to Nicky at Govatos, who helped ensure these chocolates made it out 3,000 miles to California. And yes, they did arrive in fine shape.

I love dark chocolate and nuts, so a full 1-pound box of chocolate combined with different nuts is pretty much heaven. The large quantity gave me the opportunity to experiment a bit. After trying the chocolates by themselves, I combined dark chocolate and toasted almonds with fresh rosemary (from my yard). Dark chocolate and peanuts were nibbled on with a dab of homemade strawberry/banana jam (bought earlier from a roadside produce stand). I have to say I liked both of these combinations.

Thank you to Rick at Amano Chocolate for helping to find a local store that carry their bars, and for recommending that I try pairing chocolate with single malt scotch. I felt like the nice, smooth Jembrana flavor was overshadowed by the scotch. But, I like the idea of combining the two.

Thank you to the folks at Greer's Kopper Kettle who I spoke to, and who selected and shipped this fudge. We had discussed the challenge of shipping items in warm weather, when there's always a risk that a package (of chocolate) will get left in the hot sun for an hour or two, somewhere along the journey. I expect, if I keep ordering chocolates online, I might end up with a puddle of expensive chocolate sauce on my doorstep someday in the future. However, so far, every item has arrived safe and sound.

Purchased from: J. Chocolatier, in Washington, D.C.

I used to work in Washington, D.C. when I was a young idealist. I have fond memories of walking to work and stopping at a bakery near Capitol Hill. The smell of fresh baked gingerbread people cookies was difficult to resist. Gingerbread heads: the breakfast of champions. So, while I haven't been in D.C. for awhile, I was happy to find J. Chocolatier online. The company looks like they are located a few blocks from where I used to live.

Thank you to Jane who put together a very nice assortment of chocolates.

The Jasmine Tea heart-shaped dark chocolate was perfect, with authentic jasmine flavor shining through. I don't count white chocolate, but (since I ate 6 "real" chocolates in the same sitting) I can say that J. Chocolatier's "Kulfi" was probably the best white chocolate I've tasted. I tend to like floral flavors like this (cardamom and rose water). And, the (chili?, coffee?) filling for the Sesame Seed chocolate complemented the toasted black and white seeds very nicely.

What luck! One of the few popular breakfast cereals that I can eat (i.e. it doesn't contain wheat) turns out to be Chocolate Lucky Charms. (This cereal is made from whole grain corn.)

I have a soft spot for clever marketing and packaging, and so what really drew me in to buying this was the claim on the front of the box that reads: "Control Time! with the Hourglass Marshmallow Charm"... which is great, because I've always wanted to control time. And, good thing that the Lucky Charms leprochaun has discovered this hourglass, as it appears he is being pursued by a dinosaur.

If you have driven from the San Francisco/San Jose, CA, area over the hills in the Southeast to Highway 5, you may remember signs alerting you to the presence of Casa de Fruta, a roadside stop, near Pacheco Pass. Casa de Fruta has grown over the years (since it's beginnings in 1908) and now includes a fruit/produce stand, a restaurant or two, a gift shop, a train ride, and other amusements. While some items can be a bit pricey, you'll have your choice of refreshments if you stop there. These chocolate-covered almonds were impressive in size.

My apologies in advance to Casa de Fruta for the poor image (scanned package label) above. This sometimes happens with foil or highly reflective wrapping material.

Key lime flavor makes me think of warm summer weather. And, in fact, it's shaping up to be a hot day here in California. (This upsurge in the temperature reminds me that I need to eat down my chocolate inventory, before summer starts in a few weeks. I have no air conditioning in my house. I've been squirreling away new, and as yet untasted, chocolates in a cool dark corner.)

Calories: 150 calories (estimate - no calorie information on packaging)
Cost: $7.50 in total bar
Purchased from: Sugar Shack, in Menlo Park, CA

The Roark bar is best if it's brought up to room temperature first; or, if you are patient, you can wait until it softens up in your mouth before biting into it. Otherwise this chocolate can be a bit tough to bite into. But then perhaps with a name like Roark* this is fitting.

*Note: "Roark" refers to a fictional character, a strong, independent architect named Howard Roark who was the protagonist in Ayn Rand's (1943) novel "The Fountainhead" -- a somewhat controversial, philosophical tale some have called an homage to capitalism. Coco-luxe makes a series of chocolate bars with names like this -- i.e. inspired by flashes of "classic Americana."

Limited edition chocolate candy bars are fun. They're often recombinations of chocolate, nut, caramel, nougat and other common ingredients. You would think candy manufacturers would run out of ideas for these bars, but it is a tribute to their creative staff that new variations keep emerging.

The Thingamajig bar blended what tasted like chocolate breakfast cereal and peanut butter; and while it did contain a few things I'd have rather done without (hydrogenated oils, maltodextrin, barley malt), it wasn't a bad mix.

I've had chocolate-covered espresso beans before, but I admit I'm a sucker for clever packaging and new ideas. (See above for scanned images from front and back of box - including graphs on caffeine molecule and content. Not seen - side/end flap marked "entrance.") So I had to try these. These dark and white chocolate covered beans definitely deliver a kicky dose of caffeine. I had to stop at 7 pieces (1/4 of the 28 pieces in one small box).

I found this Yosemite Country trail mix at the Pine Tree Market, a little store, on a little road, a few days ago, on the way back from a hike up to Chilnualna Falls. It was a great time to visit , as the waterfalls in Yosemite were full and roaring down into the valley.

Note: This post was delayed due to a trip to Yosemite National Park, where I was out of Internet range for a few days.

I wish I had taken a photo of this drink. Yes, it was attractive; but I also will remember the setting. I very much enjoyed this Truffletini (which could have also counted as dessert), while sitting out on the porch at the old Wawona Hotel in Yosemite National Park. I was able to visit the base of four different waterfalls in the park this weekend, and earlier today enjoyed the view of the Yosemite Valley from Glacier Point. It was a great end-of-the-day treat to be sipping this chocolate martini with friends, as the sun was setting behind the pine trees in the distance.

Note: This posting was delayed due to a trip to Yosemite National Park (out of Internet reception range).

I don't normally eat white chocolate (items made from just cocoa butter), but this bar contained cocoa nibs (from cacao pods, and the source of cocoa solids - which I do count as chocolate). And this Spumoni bar sounded like a fun combination of flavors.

I like the carefully crafted and clever packaging for this double-bar offering, and the imprinting on the bars themselves. A note to those who may have concerns about goat milk flavor...I could barely taste the goat milk used in the first bar (Goat's Milk). And I detected not a hint of goat in the second (Cheeky Goat) bar -- that was a bit darker with a touch of mint.

Purchased from: Walgreens, in Palo Alto, CA

This bar (with caffeine added) looked like the right choice for a Monday morning lift. I'm sensitive to caffeine, so I only had half of this large, limited edition candy bar. (Theobromine, the close relative to caffeine found in cacao/chocolate, does not bother me.) It was a productive Monday today; however, to avoid a possible caffeine-withdrawal headache later, I'll ingest a tinier dose of caffeine tomorrow. One benefit of eating chocolate every day: no danger of getting a chocolate-withdrawal headache.

The Butterfinger BUZZ looks like it was tailor-made for busy folks with big appetites working in front of their computer systems and/or gaming systems, sipping an occasional energy drink. OK, I admit it, I sort of fit into this target audience, although I hate to admit it. And even though I do eat my fresh fruits and vegetables, and try to avoid unhealthy foods, seeing this bar on the shelves seemed to capture what people are buying and eating today so well, this just had to be included on my blog.

I thought this house from New Orleans was very clever. And this chocolate dwelling came packaged with an upbeat phrase printed on a blue ribbon that read: "Rebuilding New Orleans," referring to home restoration activities in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I'm happy to support any part of the proceeds going to help this cause.

Unfortunately, the chocolate house was quickly rendered structurally unsound -- by a few large bites taken out of the right side. The rest may be melted down to use as blue fondue for some fresh strawberries.
