Welcome to Day #1 of Chocolate and Gold Theme Week.

Today's Dark Chocolate Bourbon Truffle Fudge Bar, from John Kelly Chocolates (Los Angeles, CA) was swaddled in gold foil.

Andy's Orchard - Apricot Surprise - Nov. 28, 2021

Chocolate of the Day

Andy's Orchard
Apricot Surprise
Good +
Weight: 1.76 oz. (50 g.) (estimate) in 1 large confection
Calories: 230 calories (estimate) in 1 piece
Cost: $3.50 for 1 package
Purchased from: Andy's Orchard, Morgan Hill, CA

Welcome to Day #7 of Chocolate and Fruit Theme Weeks.

Today's Chocolate Surprise was from Andy's Orchard (Morgan Hill, CA).

This jumbo-sized, dark chocolate covered confection had an aroma with fudge brownie and chocolate cookie notes.

A smooth dark chocolate shell covered a large piece of sweet, white divinity fudge with walnuts, topped with dried Blenheim apricot.

The fudge tasted high-quality and homemade but was (as most fudges are for me) too sweet and rich. The other components (the dark chocolate, apricot and walnuts in the fudge) all had authentic, satisfying flavors. Andy's Orchard grows a variety of fruits, including apricots. Prior to the development associated with Silicon Valley, apricots, cherries and plums were local and road-side market staples in Santa Clara County.*

Ingredients: Dried Blenheim Apricots, Divinity with Walnuts, and chocolate

Allergy-related information: (No information on small label; contained tree nuts (walnuts).)

*Apricots orchards were everywhere in the South Bay 1950s. The street I had grown up on was once part of an orchard, as near as I can tell. "...Until the 1960s, Santa Clara Valley was the largest fruit production and packing region in the world, with 39 canneries."

By the 1970s, the fruit industry was winding down and many fruit canneries had closed. The remaining fruit trees were still beautiful, especially in the early spring, when apricot and cherry trees were covered with white blossoms, and swathes of green grass and yellow mustard flowers and sour grass (oxalis) flowers grew between the trees.

Children would wander into orchard remnants to gaze at caterpillars and butterflies, eat an apricot, and occasionally throw ripe apricots at each other. At least that's what we did, before the old orchard behind our back fence was bulldozed and homes were built.

Now, I need to drive south for an hour to find apricot trees at Andy's Orchard; and I was grateful there were still some Bleinheim apricots left.

Jolly Llama - Vanilla Fudge Sundae Cones - Oct. 29, 2021

Chocolate of the Day

Jolly Llama
(Casper's Ice Cream)
Vanilla Fudge Sundae Cones
Good - Good +
Weight: 4.75 fl. oz. (140 mL) (100 g.) / 14.25 fl. oz. (421 mL) in total package/box of 3 cones
Calories: 290 calories in 1 cone
Cost: $3.99 for 1 package/box of 3 cones
Purchased from: Sprouts Farmers Market, Mountain View, CA

Welcome to Day #5 of Chocolate and Waffle Week, including a lot of chocolate and waffle cone items.

Today's Jolly Llama dairy-free and gluten-free Vanilla Fudge Sundae Cones were from Casper's Ice Cream (Richmond, UT).

The subtle aroma of these cones conjured up memories of ice cream, chocolate and cake.

This individually-wrapped cone (1 of 3 in a box) offered an attractive array of textures: fudge-y and crispy chocolate elements; relatively creamy frozen vanilla filling, and a crunchy "ice cream"/frozen dessert cone.

A plug of chocolate at the bottom of this sweet, vanilla and chocolate sundae cone helped prevent drips and provided a last blast of rich, chocolate-y flavor--a fun and functional touch.

Ingredients: Non-dairy frozen dessert (water, stabilizer (tapioca syrup solids, dextrose, pea protein salt, locust bean gum, guar gum), cane sugar, coconut oil, natural flavor); gluten free cone (rice flour, brown sugar, corn starch, tapioca starch, cellulose, natural flavor, salt, soy lecithin, vegetable oil shortening (may contain one or more of the following: canola oil, coconut oil, modified palm oil, soybean oil, and soy lecithin (an emulsifier), vanilla extract); chocolate variegate (cane sugar, water, chocolate liquor, cocoa (processed with alkali), corn starch, natural flavors, salt); chocolate drop (sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, sunflower lecithin (an emulsifier), vanilla extract).

Allergen-related information: "Contains soy and coconut." "Manufactured on shared equipment with products that contain milk, peanut, tree nut, wheat and egg ingredients."

Weight: 1/2 cup (102 g.) / 1 Pint (473 mL) in total container
Calories: 270 calories in 1 (1/2 cup) serving
Cost: $ missing information
Purchased from: missing information

Welcome to Day #7 of Chocolate and Banana Theme Week.

Happy first day of autumn chocolate-loving friends! The shorter days are not enough to keep us away from chilly, frozen chocolate desserts. Today temperatures were in the mid-90s (F) in Northern California.

Today's Chunky Monkey Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert was from Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream (South Burlington, Vermont).*

This non-dairy (almond milk) version of the company's original Chunky Monkey, a long-time Ben and Jerry's ice cream flavor, was better than expected. Mid-afternoon heat sizzled, and we found ourselves enjoying a second helping to cool down. This smooth, cold, rich and relatively creamy frozen dessert had authentic banana, fudge chunk and fresh banana flavors.

*Ben and Jerry's, now known as Ben and Jerry's Homemade Holdings Inc., began selling ice creams in 1978 in Burlington, VT. In 2000, the company was sold to British-Dutch conglomerate Unilever, and presently operates as a fully owned subsidiary of Unilever.

Welcome to Day #6 of Chocolate Brownie Theme Week.

Today's Ah, Fudge Nuts! Cacao-Abunga Brownie bar was from Picky Bars (Bend, OR).

This energy bar with the long name was thoughtfully constructed with a short list of ingredients by three professional athletes Lauren Fleshman, Jesse Thomas and Steph Bruce.

The gluten-free bar had a brownie and nut aroma, and a pleasant slightly fudgey chocolate chew. It contained 7 grams of protein, and had a clean finish—with no artificial after-taste that occasionally accompany some protein and energy bars.

Aloha - Chocolate Fudge Brownie bar - Aug. 8, 2018

Chocolate Fudge Brownie Organic Protein Bar

Purchased from: Cunha's Country Store, Half Moon Bay, CA
Welcome to Day #2 of Chocolate Brownie Theme Week.

Today's Chocolate Fudge Brownie Organic Protein Bar was made for Aloha (New York, NY).

The plant-based bar's protein was primarily derived from a pumpkin seed and brown rice protein blend and cashew butter.

This organic protein bar's slightly chewy fudge brownie texture and flavor was almost enough to conceal a faint protein bar flavor.

Breyers Raspberry Fudge Swirl Low Fat Ice Cream - April 28, 2018

Chocolate of the Day:

Breyers
Breyers Delights - Raspberry Fudge Swirl Low Fat Ice Cream
Good
Weight: 2/3 cup (96 g.) / 1 Pint (473 mL) in total container
Calories: 110 calories in 1 (2/3 cup) serving
Cost: $4.49 for 1 container
Purchased from: Safeway, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #5 of Chocolate and Raspberry Theme Week.

Today's Breyers Delights Raspberry Fudge Swirl Low Fat Ice Cream from Breyers* (Englewood Cliffs, NJ).

Products with an ingredients list with longer than 5 items don't usually fare better than their simpler counterparts. For example, ice creams without vegetable gums taste better to us and seem to be easier to digest.

Today's low fat raspberry ice cream was created to respond to changing public tastes, and most of those changes seem to be for the better. In addition to being lower in fat and sugar and higher in protein, this ice cream was infused with natural tasting raspberry juice and flavor that seemed to be lacking in artificial flavoring or coloring.

A light fudge swirl added a touch of chocolate flavor and rich texture. It was incorporated into an ice cream base that had a very slightly granular texture (due to lower fat and a little extra (milk) protein (about 6.6 g. per serving or 20 g. per container).

The ice cream was also lighter in terms of sugar. It was sweetened with a combination of corn-based sweeteners and stevia.

The nutrition labeling was printed large enough to be read and understood. At 110 calories per 2/3 cup serving (approximately 1/3 the calories of many premium ice creams), consumers might be more tempted to each a whole pint vs. just one serving. But, then, that is an issue on the consumer side and not on the producer side.

*Breyers, a brand of frozen desserts/ice cream sold in the U.S. and Canada, was originally founded in 1866 by William A. Breyer, and later became part of Kraft, and then ice cream giant, Unilever.

Safeway - Extreme Moose Tracks ice cream - Apr. 30, 2017

Chocolate of the Day:

Safeway Signature Select
Extreme Moose Tracks ice cream
Good
Weight: 1/4 cup (33 g.) / 1.5 Quarts (1.42 Liters) in total container
Calories: 95 calories in 1/4 cup serving // 465 cals. (estimate) for 1 small banana split
Cost: $3.99 for 1 container
Purchased from: Safeway, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #5 of Chocolate and Banana Theme Week.

One can't have a banana theme week without at least one banana split with chocolate ice cream. Today's split featured: vanilla, walnut and Extreme Moose Tracks chocolate ice creams, walnut pieces, a cherry and, of course, a banana.

What is Moose Tracks? In the mid-1990s, Moose Tracks Fudge* became popular as part of an ice cream flavor of the same name.

The original Moose Tracks ice cream was made of vanilla ice cream, Moose Tracks Fudge and peanut butter cups. Today's Safeway's Signature Select Extreme Moose Tracks ice cream ups the chocolate ante and is made with a chocolate ice cream base with fudge cups and pieces of Moose Tracks Fudge.

*The folks at Denali Flavors, Inc. (Michigan) have expanded the Moose Tracks line to include ice creams, cheesecakes and milks.

Popcorn, Indiana - Dark Fudge Peppermint Drizzlecorn - April 4, 2017

Chocolate of the Day:

Popcorn, Indiana LLC
Dark Fudge Peppermint Drizzlecorn
Good++
Weight: 3 oz. (84.9 g.) / 5 oz. (141 g.) in total bag
Calories: 390 calories in 3 servings (3/5 bag)
Cost: $missing information for 1 bag
Purchased from: missing information

Welcome to Day #3 of Chocolate and Indiana Theme Week.

Today's Limited Edition Dark Fudge Peppermint Drizzlecorn from Popcorn, Indiana LLC* (Westport, CT) hit the spot.

This sweet, salty and minty Drizzlecorn was full of flavor without a homogenous sugary glaze, making it possible to taste layers of flavor and the natural popcorn underneath.

The chocolate fudge was drizzled lightly across the popped corn, giving it just the right amount of rich chocolate flavor and contrasting smooth texture. This Drizzlecorn was also made without artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, and it was certified gluten free and kosher.

I recommend this with only one reservation. Like many snack foods, if you eat this when you're hungry, it's easy to eat way too much. Not a bad problem to have, but consider yourself forewarned. (Although you may have to wait until the holidays to find this Limited Edition flavor in stores again.)

*Popcorn, IN is not just a marketing name. It's a small community that really does exist, about 60 miles outside Indianapolis, IN.

Weight: 1.7 oz. (48 g.) in 1 bar

Purchased from: Pebble Beach Market, Pebble Beach, CA

Welcome to Day #3 of Chocolate and Orange Series.

Semi-Sweet Chocolate Orange Truffle Fudge bar from John Kelly Foods, Inc. (Los Angeles, CA)

Their Truffle Fudge bars are constructed more like truffles than bars -- in that they have a soft, relatively light but also fudgey chocolate ganache-like filling.

Today's Semi-Sweet Orange Truffle Fudge bar wrapped in gold foil was no exception. Though small in size, it was very satisfying in taste and smooth, satisfying texture—like eating a giant truffle. This bar contained subtle orange flavoring.

Triple Caramel Chunk Ice Cream

Calories: 270 calories in 1/2 cup serving
Cost: $4.39 (estimate) for 1 container
Purchased from: Safeway, (missing info on location/city), CA

Welcome to Day #6 of Chilled Chocolate Theme Week.

I feel like a hypocrite. Most of the time, I find less sweet chocolate items to be far more likeable. However, occasionally sugar has its place, and sometimes that involves caramel or toffee flavors blended with chocolate. It takes a deft hand not to overplay the sweet, but today's entry managed to defy the odds.

Today's Triple Caramel Chunk Ice Cream from Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream (South Burlington, Vermont) had wonderful ribbons of authentic-tasting caramel running through a base of super creamy caramel ice cream. The rich (high-fat content of the) ice cream helped to balance out the first two aspects of sweet caramel.

The third "caramel" element in this triple play involved small fudge-covered "caramel chunks" that helped boost the caramel flavor, and introduced occasional bursts of chocolate texture and taste.

A small serving of today's ice cream will satisfy most sweet teeth.

Godiva - Caramel Nut Brownie Truffles - Mar. 13, 2016

Chocolate of the Day:

Godiva Chocolatier, Inc.
Caramel Nut Brownie Dessert Truffles
Good
Weight: .74 oz. (21 g.) / 4.4 oz. (125 g.) in total package
Calories: 95 calories in 2 pieces
Cost: $1.99 (sale) for 1 package
Purchased from: Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #6 of Chocolate Brownie Week.

Today's package of individually-wrapped Caramel Nut Brownie Dessert Truffles were created by Godiva Chocolatier (New York, NY).

These truffles contained two flavor layers: caramel and fudge blended with hazelnuts—surrounded by a dark chocolate shell.

Care must be taken when biting into these truffles. The flowing, sweet, caramel filling may ooze out. The bottom "fudge brownie" layer of filling helped balance the very sweet caramel. There was a barely detectable hint of hazelnut chocolate (spread) flavor in the finish.

John Kelly - Peanut Butter Truffle Fudge Bites with Salt - Nov. 10, 2015

Truffle Fudge Bites
Peanut Butter with Himalayan Pink Salt

Calories: 140 calories in 1 bar (1/2 box)

Purchased from: Studio 41, Benicia, CA

Welcome to Day #6 of Chocolate and Peanuts Theme Week.

Today's box of 2 Peanut Butter Truffle Fudge Bites with Himalayan Pink Salt were made by John Kelly Chocolates (Hollywood, CA), a company specializing in truffle fudge chocolates.

A generous, solid layer of peanut butter fudge was enrobed in velvety milk chocolate and was topped with a diagonal sprinkle of salt crystals.

Protein and fats (nuts, butters) and salt help balance what for some might be an overly sweet taste in a fudge-style chocolate. As with any chocolate fudge, make sure to buy these when they're fresh.

John Kelly - Chocolate and Peanut Butter Truffle Fudge - Nov. 9, 2015

Chocolate of the Day:

John Kelly Chocolates
Semi-Sweet Chocolate and Peanut Butter Truffle Fudge Bar
Good - Good +
Weight: 1.7 oz. (48 g.) in total bar
Calories: 250 calories (estimate) in 1 piece/bar
Cost: $4.25 in total bar
Purchased from: Studio 41, Benicia, CA

Today was Day #5 of Chocolate and Peanuts Theme Week.

John Kelly (actually two people) started producing their fudge truffle chocolates in Hollywood back in 2004.

I "discovered" a whole trove of John Kelly Chocolates at Studio 41 (Benicia, CA), a store full of interesting gifts and chocolates. Benicia's  historic downtown area is full of creative independent businesses—a refreshing change from the chain stores that now inhabit most Bay Area cities—making a stroll through downtown and by the water a very pleasant experience.

Today's Semi-Sweet Chocolate and Peanut Butter Truffle Fudge Bar was diminutive but dense. A pleasant chocolate fudge aroma escaped as I peeled back the gold foil wrapper.

As with most fudge, this was sweet; but it was more balanced than most. The thick peanut butter layer helped. Nuts are a great way to dial back and complement sugary sweetness.

Today was Day #3 of Chocolate Surprise Week.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day to all who celebrate in the U.S., and beyond.

The closest I came to the Emerald Isle (Ireland) was imagining the green pastures of a dairy farm, dotted with cows, in the midwest, near a place called the 2nd Street Creamery*.

Surprise. We're pulling over for some Truck Stop Fudge ice cream from 2nd Street Creamery. (I couldn't find the company's Limerick Cherry Chocolate ice cream -- that would've offered a fun Irish twist.)

The Truck Stop related name was unusual enough I hit the brakes when I saw it in the freezer section. Plus that cute drawing of the cow riding a bicycle-milk cart sucked me in.

Made of rich chocolate ice cream, marshmallow cream and fudge sauce, this 2nd Street Truck Stop Fudge flavor was worth stopping for.

*Wells Enterprises, Inc., aka Wells' Dairy, is likely the largest, privately held, family owned ice cream maker in the U.S. They're also the owners of the 2nd Street Creamery and Blue Bunny ice cream brands. I was surprised to learn that Wells produces more than 150 million gallons of ice cream annually.

Brigittine Monks - Cherry Chocolate Fudge - Jan. 1, 2015

Chocolate of the Day:

The Brigittine Monks Gourmet Confections
Cherry Chocolate Fudge Royale with Nuts
Good ++ - Very Good
Weight: 1 oz. (28.3 g.) / 1 lb. (454 g.) in total box
Calories: 130 calories (estimate) in 1 oz. (28.3 g.) square
Cost: $11.00 (plus any applicable shipping and handling)
Purchased from: (online order) Brigittine Monks

Today was Day #2 of Chocolate, Cherry and Nuts Theme Week.

Fudge is generally too sweet for me, but this Cherry Chocolate Fudge Royale with Nuts from the Brigittine Monks Gourmet Confections (Amity, OR) was loaded with flavors that I like.

Chocolate + cherries and nuts combinations evoke lots of sweet childhood memories as well -- probably linked to an ice cream sundae or two.

People often ask me where I find chocolates. A friend (thank you Marilyn!) recommended today's fudge; and so I ordered some to give it a try.

This was indeed great fudge -- smooth, creamy...and yes, sweet, but balanced and very flavorfully filled with cherries and nuts.

Alternative Baking Co. - Fudge cookie - Oct. 7, 2014

Chocolate of the Day:

Alternative Baking Company, Inc.
Fudge Indulgence cookie
Good - Good +
Weight: 2.25 oz. (64 g.) in 1 cookie
Calories: 220 calories in 1 cookie
Cost: $1.79 for 1 cookie
Purchased from: Country Sun Natural Foods, Palo Alto, CA

Today was Day #7 of Chocolate and Gluten-Free Cookie Theme Week.

However, given the large number of gluten-free cookies with chocolate this week, I'll be stretching this week out -- to a baker's dozen of 14 days.

Today's individually wrapped Fudge Indulgence cookie from the Alternative Baking Company, Inc. (Sacramento, CA) was vegan, egg free and dairy free. It hung together well and was not too crumbly. And it was also a good size for dessert. Not too small, not too large. The sealed plastic package made the individually-wrapped cookie easier to transport for a lunch or snack on the go.

The Fudge Indulgence cookie was one of five different gluten-free cookie flavors available. I will sample the company's "Chocolate Explosion" gluten-free cookie tomorrow.

Bliss - Chocolate Hazelnut Fudge - Mar. 18, 2014

Chocolate of the Day:

Bliss Unlimited, LLC
Luna and Larry's
Coconut Bliss - Chocolate Hazelnut Fudge
Good - Good +
Weight: 1/2 cup (97 g.) / 1 Pint (473 mL) total container
Calories: 240 calories in 1/2 cup serving
Purchased from: Country Sun Natural Foods, Palo Alto, CA

When I think of non-dairy frozen desserts, I don't always think of high-quality, natural ingredients. However, today's Luna and Larry's Coconut Bliss Chocolate Hazelnut Fudge frozen dessert, distributed by Bliss Unlimited, LLC (Eugene, OR) was different. This organic coconut milk-based chocolate "ice cream" was sweetened with organic agave syrup, chocolate fudge and hazelnuts. The dark fudge ribbon wound its way through this frozen dessert and had a slight mocha flavor to it (there was no coffee in this dessert).

For those who might not care that much for coconut, not to worry. The coconut flavor was subtle, and the texture of this frozen dessert was almost as creamy as, well, real dairy cream based ice cream. The Coconut Bliss product line would be a good substitute for those wanting an organic, vegan, gluten-free/soy-free alternative to traditional ice cream. The company also claims that their frozen desserts with agave provide a relatively low-glycemic option.

Today was Day #5 of Chocolate and Hazelnut Theme Week.

Cocopotamus - Blimey - March 6, 2014

Chocolate of the Day:

NYDC Chocolate, LLC
Cocopotamus
Blimey - Key Lime Caramel Fudge Truffles
Good
Weight: .494 oz. (14 g.) / 2.47 oz. (70 g.) in 1 box of 5 pieces
Calories: 55 calories in 1 piece (per label)
Cost: $10.50 for 1 box of 5 pieces
Purchased from: NYDC Chocolate, online order

Welcome to the first day of Chocolate and Green Theme Week.

What is a green theme week? Think green limes, spring green grass and flowers, Saint Patrick's Day, four-leaf clovers and leprechauns, maybe an Easter bunny or two excited about Earth Day next month, and you've got it.

Today's gluten-free "Blimey" Key Lime Caramel Fudge Truffles were part of the Cocopotamus caramel line from NYDC Chocolate (Albuquerque, NM), and contained a subtle hint of natural key lime extract. A lively creamy caramel fudge inside was coated in dark chocolate and marked with a pale lime-lemon colored cross-hatch of frosting (a la hot cross bun).

Cocopotamus - Oopsy Daisy - Jan. 13, 2014

Chocolate of the Day:

NYDC Chocolate
Cocopotamus
Oopsy-Daisy Coconut Salted Caramel Fudge Truffles
Good
Weight: 1 oz. (28 g.) for 2 pieces
Calories: 150 calories (estimate) for 2 pieces
Cost: $11.95 (estimate) for 1 mesh bag of 5 pieces
Purchased from: NYDC Chocolate (online order)

I'm not sure "Oopsy-Daisy" truffles from NYDC Chocolate (Albuquerque, NM) were the most appropriately-named chocolates to be eating the day I was boarding airline flights to far flung destinations. But they didn't seem to do any harm.

These dark chocolate coated orbs adorned with a thin, pink stripe, were relatively smooth and creamy for a caramel or a piece of fudge -- they echoed both flavors. The truffles were swaddled in bright copper foil, and helped to brighten up time spent in airports.

The origin of the Oopsy-Daisy name, as I understand it, had to do with a happy accident in the Kitchen at NYDC Chocolate, and the melding of fudge and caramel. I love hearing about creative discoveries like this.

Today was Day #13 of Chocolate and Coconut Theme Weeks.

Note: Due to travel and other factors, photos will be delayed.
