Chocolate of The Day

Moksha
Reishi - Functional Mushrooms in 65% Dark Vegan Chocolate
Good ++
Weight: .5 oz. (15 g.) in 1 package
Calories: 90 calories in 1 package
Cost: $6.00 for 1 package
Purchased from: Far West Fungi, SF Ferry Building, San Francisco, CA

Welcome to Day #4 of Chocolate & Mushrooms Theme Week.

Today's Reishi Functional Mushrooms in 65% Dark Vegan Chocolate (square) was manufactured (from cacao bean nib-to-bar) by Moksha Chocolate (Boulder, CO).

This reishi mushroom chocolate bar was labeled for "Night Time"--a reference to the thought that reishi mushrooms contain compounds that can act as a non-drowsy relaxant at the end of the day.

Aroma and flavor notes included: smooth, dark chocolate; faint coconut; and mushroom.

Texture: smooth textured (no mushroom powder "grit")

I appreciated the balanced and well-executed flavors, and the short list of ingredients.

Ingredients: Cacao Nibs, Coconut Sugar, Coconut Milk Powder, Cacao Butter, Dried Mushrooms (Reishi)

Allergen-related information: Contains Coconut (Coconut Sugar, Coconut Milk).

Cost: $11.00 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Xocolatl, online order

Welcome to Day #15 of Chocolate & Coffee Theme Week.

Today's 60% Dark Chocolate Commuter East Pole Coffee with Coconut Milk (bar) was made from bean-to-bar by Xocolatl LLC (Atlanta, GA).

Aroma and flavor notes included: smooth dark chocolate and coffee with a balanced coconut milk finish.

Texture: smooth texture, mouthfeel and melt--largely due to the coconut milk.

I liked the flavor and texture smoothing the authentic-tasting coconut milk added, reducing the level of harshness (acidity and bitterness) that might have been present with the cacao and coffee.

There is a balance with using sugars and milks -- you can enjoy creamier/silkier chocolate texture but you may also experience muffle subtler cacao (and in this case coffee) aroma and flavor notes. There was still a coffee flavor that came through with this bar, but it was more subtle.

I also appreciated the relatively short list of quality and organic ingredients.

Ingredients: Cacao*, Cane Sugar*, Coconut Milk*, Cocoa Butter*, Coffee (* = Organic)

Allergen-related information: "Made on equipment that processes soy, wheat, peanuts & tree nuts (almond, hazelnut, pecan).

Weight: 3 TB (.918 oz. (26 g.)) / 5 oz. (142 g.) total package
Calories: 113 calories in 1 serving
Cost: $13.99 for 1 package
Purchased from: Bar & Cocoa, online order

Welcome to Day #4 of Chocolate, Warm Spices & Maple Theme Week.

Today's Limited Batch Gingerbread Hot Chocolate Unroasted Dark Chocolate (mix) was manufactured by Raaka Chocolate (Brooklyn, NY).

Most hot chocolates aren't made with a single origin cacao. This hot chocolate mix was made using unroasted cacao from Zorzal Cacao -- a 1,000-acre private bird sanctuary and organic cacao farm in the Dominican Republic.

Aroma notes included: smooth, authentic hot chocolate; aromatic sweet and sassy gingerbread cookie; and subtle coconut.

Texture: When this finely ground cacao powder, coconut milk powder and warm spice blend was mixed with hot water and stirred for a few minutes it created a relatively smooth hot chocolate (but with a little bit of spice grit). When I make this again, I'll let it sit in hot water for a few more minutes to let the spices diffuse, then blend and/or filter it before drinking. (I probably rushed the process. The Spanish children's song "Bate, Bate Chocolate" came to mind; where patience and process are reinforced by singing a song about chocolate beverage making.)

This warming hot beverage had a touch of the spicy zing of a homemade ginger molasses cookie, with a splash of warm coconut and hot cocoa--all in a satisfying hot beverage. Great for a winter morning.

This quality, base blend could be adorned with more items if desired. Want to add milk, cream, or more coconut milk (or milk of your choice) to this hot chocolate? Marshmallows? Go right ahead.

The sweetness level was just right for me (not overly sweet). But for those with a sweet tooth, you could try adding a little fresh ginger and molasses syrup (for a real waker-upper); brown sugar; coconut nectar or honey...Customize as you wish.

I appreciated the use of organic and gluten free ingredients...and that the company is committed to transparent trade and testing for heavy metals (results can be viewed on their website).

Ingredients: "organic cane sugar, organic cacao powder, organic coconut milk powder, organic cacao butter, organic ginger, organic cinnamon, organic nutmeg"

Allergen-related information: None listed on package. Contains: Coconut.

*I learned this song in Spanish class in elementary school decades ago. The teacher brought in a hand-carved wooden molinillo from Mexico (a whisk-like device introduced by the Spanish for stirring and "beating"/frothing hot chocolate beverages). The molinillo was rotated/rolled between ones hands and used as a prop during the song.

Happy Halloween, and welcome to Day #10 of Chocolate & Fruits Theme Week on Chocolate Banquet.

The prices of cacao and chocolate have soared to scary levels. But I'm sticking with multiple chocolates today, in memory of all those little candy bars and chocolate confections consumed as a trick-or-treating child.

Today's "Spooky Mermaids" 60% Dark Chocolate with coconut milk, vanilla-infused sea salt and nibs (bar)--wrapped in special Halloween packaging with luminous orange houses and trees--was created by Xocolatl LLC (Atlanta, GA).

Spooky Mermaids...

Aroma and flavor notes for today's Spooky 60% bar included: (very slightly earthy, sweet) dark chocolate, haunted with ghostly vapors of faint coconut milk and vanilla. A pinch of sea salt balanced out this concoction.

The texture was smooth (much more satisfying than spooky), and the vanilla-infused sea salt and softly crunchy cacao nibs, added complementary textures and flavors. You may be relieved to know that no mermaids were added or harmed in the making of this bar....Or, were they?...Only Xocolatl knows for sure. (I think I just heard cackling laughter and thunder outside...)

I enjoyed this bar with fall fruits: pumpkin-hued persimmons and blood-red pears. (Also on the menu: pumpkin soup. And yes, pumpkins are technically fruits.)

Ingredients: "Cacao*, Cane Sugar*, Coconut Milk*, Cocoa Butter*, Sea Salt, Vanilla (* organic)"

Allergen-related information: Made on equipment that processes soy, wheat, peanuts & tree nuts (almond, hazelnut, pecan).

Cost: $8.99 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Sigona's Market, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #4 of Chocolate and India Week.

Today's Bon-fiction "The Coconut Covenant" 55% dark mylk chocolate with coconut sugar (bar) was made from tree-to-bar in India, and imported and distributed by Godavari Chocolate Inc. (Folsom, CA).

The cacao used to make this bar was "hand-picked from farms in the Godavari region of Southern India."

Aroma notes for this coconut mylk bar included: smooth, slightly fruity dark chocolate. The flavor notes were a richer version of these same aroma notes. There was a small, unexpected but tasty, uptick in spicy chili in one or two bites. And there was a pleasing, diffuse and faint tropical fruit (mango, cacao fruit/pulp) note.

The coconut mylk and sugar flavors were pleasing, authentic; not too strong and not overly sweet (thank you!). (This was not your chain store coconut chocolate bar.)

The texture was very smooth, and fairly creamy/buttery.

I enjoyed the authentic, balanced and smooth cacao and coconut flavors, and the relatively low levels of acids/tannins and bitterness.

Ingredients: "Cocoa Beans, Coconut Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Coconut Milk Powder"

Allergen-related information: "Manufactured in a facility that also processes: Milk, Peanuts, Almond, Cashew, Walnut, Coconut, Hazelnut, Pistachio."

Welcome to Day #12 of Chocolate and the Philippines Theme Week.

Today's 55% Premium Cacao Milk Chocolate with Mango (bar) was manufactured by Oodaalolly, A H&G (Richmond, CA), and was made with Philippine cacao.

Aroma notes for this bar included: smooth dark chocolate, subtle coconut (milk) and ripe fruit (mango).

This 55% coconut milk chocolate had rich, sweet chocolate-y flavor (high-end dark chocolate fudge sauce, ganache), and very slight tangy and earthy notes.

Tiny clusters of mango pieces on the back of the bar added subtle, authentic tart-sweet mango flavor, and a bit of textural and visual interest.

Maker's tasting notes "Savor the mellow sweetness of mango blended with our luscious coconut milk...a non-dairy delight."

Ingredients: "Organic Cacao Nibs, Organic Cane Sugar, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Dried Mango, Organic Coconut Milk Powder (Organic Coconut Milk, Organic Tapioca Maltodextrin, Organic Gum Acacia"

Good ++
Weight: 1.94 oz. (55 g.) in total bar
Calories: 329 calories in 1 bar
Cost: $13.50 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Kasama Chocolate, online order

Welcome to Day #6 of Chocolate and The Philippines Theme Week.

Today's "The Endless Summer" - Seasonal Release 55% Dark Chocolate with Coconut Milk and Saba Banana (bar) was from Kasama Chocolate (Vancouver, BC, Canada).

Tropical flavor inclusions and island origins are great for cold winter days. It was chilly outside today where I live; but this "Endless Summer" bar offered a welcome, virtual trip to the Philippines.

Aroma and flavor notes included: chocolate (dark ganache); sweet green (banana); and subtle, authentic coconut milk.

There was also a faint and balanced fruit tanginess to this bar also; but it was hard to pin down whether it was coming from the cacao, the coconut milk, the banana or a combination of all the ingredients. In any case, it added a tiny bit of oomph to the overall taste. Not too tart or sour, but enough to add some interest--like a squirt of lime or lemon on a fruit salad.

Texture: The base chocolate had a creamy, almost silken, texture -- thanks to the combination of coconut milk and cocoa butter.

The Saba* banana chips (pieces on the back of the bar) added subtle banana/plantain chip texture and flavor. The chips (a generous sprinkle of small, thin, crunchy pieces) were just right for my taste; and it was great to see a variety of banana that originated in the Philippines.

As with other Kasama Chocolate offerings, I appreciated the short list of quality ingredients. And I liked that the 55% cacao dark coconut milk bar had a richer, darker flavor (more like a 65%+ cacao dark chocolate) than some other dark milk chocolates.

Ingredients: "Cacao Beans*, Unrefined Cane Sugar*, Cacao Butter*, Coconut Milk Powder*, Saba Banana Chips, Sea Salt" (* = Organic)

Allergen-related information: Contains coconut. "Made in a facility that contains nuts."

*The Saba banana is a triploid hybrid cultivar, that originated in the Philippines. It's used in cooking and eating fresh.

Welcome to Day #9 of Chocolate, Tea, Herbs and Spices Theme Week.

Today's organic Winter Citrus Unroasted Dark Chocolate 53% Cacao (bar) was from Raaka Chocolate (Brooklyn, NY).

This bar was made with unroasted, organic, cacao beans from the Semuliki Forest, Uganda.

Aroma notes included: sweet, smooth chocolate, subtle coconut (milk), and faint citrus (bergamot orange--that flavors Earl Grey tea).

The texture was smooth, creamy, almost silky (from coconut milk + cocoa butter).

Flavor notes included: rich, sweet and creamy dark chocolate; subtle coconut milk; and lovely, floral, citrus (bergamot orange). Unlike some vanilla and floral aromas in bars that recede when you taste the chocolate, both the cacao and bergamot in this Winter Citrus bar blossomed very nicely (and harmoniously) with the first bite.

I felt like I was sipping a cup of Earl Grey tea out on the veranda in spring...an escape from the gray, rainy, cold weather today outside (and the fact I don't have a veranda).

I enjoyed the short list of organic, quality ingredients, the rich yet smooth chocolate, the uplifting citrus (bergamot orange), and the creaminess of the coconut milk. Yes, it was sweet; but it felt appropriately so, i.e. consistent with a cup of sweet tea/hot chocolate.

Note: this Winter Citrus blend is a Limited Batch flavor. So, it may not be available by the time you read this post. (Although I'd argue this would be a lovely chocolate for spring and summer too.)

Maker's tasting notes/description: "Cheery, Creamy, Citrusy. Our take on the holiday orange..." "We make our chocolate with unroasted cacao beans so you can taste the natural, fruity flavor of the cacao."

Ingredients: "organic cacao beans, organic cane sugar, organic coconut milk powder, organic cacao butter, organic vanilla bean, organic bergamot oil"

Allergen-related information: Contains coconut. "Vegan, Gluten Free, Soy Free" "Certified Organic and Kosher"

Welcome to Day #3 of Chocolate and Chai Tea Week.

Today's Chai Latte (bar) was from ChocolateSpiel (Seattle, WA).

Aroma and flavor notes included: chocolate; ground, warm chai spices (from Aditi Chai); faint coconut milk; and nuts. The coconut milk chocolate tasted slightly acidic/harsh; but the overall bar was otherwise quite nice.

I enjoyed the pleasing creamy texture; the festive and colorful appearance of this bar--created by spatters of different colors of colored cocoa butter; the short list of ingredients; and the smaller size.

Ingredients: Cocoa, sugar, cocoa butter, coconut milk powder, chai spices from Aditi Chai, colored cocoa butter.

Welcome to Day #16 of Chocolate and Hawaii Theme Week.

Today's 65% Hawaiian Chocolate with Coconut Milk (bar) was from Honoka'a Chocolate (Honoka'a, HI).

Aroma notes included: rich, authentic coconut milk and sweet chocolate.

The texture was velvety smooth. (Frequently you get this lovely silky/creamy texture with coconut milk + cocoa butter.)

Flavor notes included: dark chocolate, authentic coconut milk and yogurt/earth (faint loam).

I liked the short list of only three ingredients and the authentic flavors. This was almost too sweet for me but the slightly earthy cacao helped balance out the sweetness, and vice versa. Also, the turbinado sugar used was a little less processed than some sugars, resulting in more flavor and less sugar buzz--which I appreciated.

Ingredients: 100% Hawai'i Island cacao, organic coconut milk, organic turbinado cane sugar.

Allergen-related information: ("dairy free")

Welcome to Day #12 of Chocolate and Hawaii Theme Week.

Today's while today's Coconut Milk 60% Unroasted Dark Chocolate (bar) from Raaka Chocolate (Brooklyn, NY) does not come from Hawaii (cacao origin is Uganda, Semuliki Forest), it did spark some fond Hawaii memories.

I enjoyed this Coconut Milk bar by itself, and then with two different Hawaiian coconut milk-based smoothies made with fresh banana, orange, guava and passionfruit. Today's virtual travel to Hawaii via chocolate and island fruits was inspired by the onset of colder, winter weather where I live.

Aroma and flavor notes for this bar included: dark chocolate (fudge, cocoa, dark chocolate milk); authentic, aromatic and sweet coconut (milk); and very faint, diffuse fruit (ripe red berry).

The texture was smooth, silken, cream-y. (Most coconut chocolate confections are loaded with sugar-saturated coconut. You won't find dry or over-processed coconut in this bar.)

Raaka's chocolates tend to be less processed, and feature bars like this one made with unroasted cacao. Why unroasted? The flavor can be milder/smoother as a result. And less processing of high-quality cacao is often associated with preservation of certain desirable flavor characteristics and nutritional properties.

I liked that this chocolate was gluten-free, soy-free, organic, and made with a short list of quality ingredients. For dairy-free and/or vegan chocolate lovers, Raaka offers some good options.

Maker's description: "...silky smooth...with...lush notes of berries and cream."

Ingredients: Organic cacao beans, organic cane sugar, organic coconut, organic cacao butter

Allergen-related information: Contains coconut.

Seahorse Chocolate - Dark Milk Vegan 65% (bar) - Aug. 27, 2024

Dark Milk Vegan 65% (bar)
Good +++
Weight: 1.75 oz. (50 g.) in total bar
Calories: 271 calories (estimate) in 1 bar
Cost: $10.00 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Spinnaker Chocolate, online order

Welcome to Day #3 of Chocolate and The Sea Theme Week.

Today's Dark Milk Vegan chocolate (bar) was crafted by Seahorse Chocolate (Bend, OR).

Aroma notes for this Good Food Awards winner included: dark milk chocolate, and subtle, authentic coconut milk.

This bar broke with a gentle snap; had a slow, thick, luxe melt and a silken, creamy texture; and it had a relatively long (textural and flavor) finish.

Flavor notes included: deep, dark chocolate (fudge brownie; smooth dark chocolate-y ganache; subdued, authentic coconut milk; and barely there, diffuse fruit candy/jam/marmalade and roasted coffee/mocha.

The taste was close to a deep, dense, higher-end Forastero and/or Trinitario variety cacao and tasted  darker than many 65% cacao chocolates (more like 72% cacao or even 75% cacao bars).*

Well-balanced, relatively bold and flavorful yet also very smooth, this is a dark milk vegan bar for true dark chocolate lovers.

Maker's tasting notes: "Reminds us of: Fudge, candied pear, licking brownie batter spatula" and "Reminds us of: Fudge, Orange, Lee Hazlewood's vocals"

Ingredients: Cocoa Beans, Coconut Milk, Organic Sugar

Allergen-related information: "Vegan, Gluten Free"

*Cacao percentages can be useful if you're buying dark chocolates. However, "darkness" depends on many factors, including variety/ies of cacao used, origin, and choices made in the growing, fermenting and processing of said cacao(s). All 70% dark chocolate bars will not taste the same. Some will taste light and bright; others deep and dense. And some will taste sweeter or more bitter than others. Sometimes a 65% chocolate can taste like 75% chocolate, and vice versa.

Welcome to Day #5 of Chocolate and Spices Theme Week.

Today's Caribbean Chocolate Bar from Ranger Chocolate (Portland, OR)--part of the company's Adventure Series of bars--was a collaboration with Kann (Restaurant in Portland, OR). Together they've created a blend Haitian and Pacific Northwest flavors.

Aroma notes included: chocolate, coconut milk, faint vegetable (pepper) and very faint spice, diffuse tropical fruit (mango), and vanilla.

Flavor notes for this smooth and creamy, sweet and subtly spicy, bar included: (coconut) milk chocolate and mango, with very faint spices (warm vanilla, barely detectable ginger, hot pepper), and salted rice.*

The jalapeno heat was subtle (very slight throat burn -- that didn't show until the finish). And I liked that the authentic island flavors were well balanced and complementary.

This adventure bar made me want to hunt for Caribbean restaurants (few and far between) in my area. I appreciated the virtual travel today's spicy chocolate made possible.

Ingredients: "organic cacao, organic sugar, mango, coconut, sea salt, vanilla bean, ginger, habanero"

Allergen-related information: "Contains: tree nuts (coconut)"..."Manufactured in a facility that uses gluten, egg, milk, tree nuts and sesame ingredients"

*There was salt, but no rice. in this bar. As with all write-ups on Chocolate Banquet, aroma and flavor notes I cite are perceptions, and don't always correspond to the actual ingredients. (For example, you can taste berries when you're sipping a glass of red wine; but that doesn't mean the wine contains berries. The same goes for chocolate with complex flavors.)

Calories: 175 calories (estimate) in 1/2 bar
Cost: $10.00 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Bar and Cocoa, online order

Welcome to Day #7 of Chocolate and Thailand Theme Week.

Today's Thai Chocolate Bar (Batch 13) was from Ranger Chocolate Co. (Portland, OR). This Thai-inspired blend of sweet and savory flavor inclusions was part of the company's Adventure Series chocolate bar series.

Aroma notes for this exotic bar included: chocolate, coconut milk, and very faint rice, diffuse fruit and warm spice.

The texture was creamy (coconut milk, cocoa butter) and crunchy (tiny bits of rice). The crispy-crunchy texture of the crushed rice was just right--not too firm and chewy, not too soft.

Flavor notes included: sweet coconut milk chocolate, rice (identified more by its texture than mild (almost salted buttery) flavor), and very faint warm spice (very mild galangal (aka Thai ginger)). The coconut milk muted stronger flavors (cacao, spices) that might have been present in this creamy homage to sweet and savory Thai cuisine. The flavors were well executed; and there weren't too many elements competing for attention, which made this chocolate taste more like Thai comfort food than a spicy, sizzling entree.

Maker's notes: "Our Adventure Series explores our desire to always try something new. This bar is influenced by our love for Thai cuisine--blending savory and sweet..."

Ingredients: "Organic cacao, coconut milk, organic sugar, cacao butter, rice, sea salt, galangal, white pepper"

Allergen-related information: "Contains: tree nuts (coconut)" "Manufactured in a facility that uses gluten, milk, egg...tree nuts ingredients"

Weight: 1.05 oz. (30 g.) / 2.1 oz. (60 g.) in total bar
Calories: 163 calories (estimate) in 1/2 bar
Cost: $12.00 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Pinwheel Craft Chocolate, online order

Welcome to Day #7 of Chocolate and Coconut Theme Week.

Today's 62% Coconut "Milk" Kokoa Kamili, Tanzania (bar) was from Pinwheel Chocolate LLC (Eagle Mountain, UT). This bean-to-bar chocolate maker "started as a mother/daughter hobby..." Happily for us, this hobby morphed into a small business.

Aroma notes for this bar included: smooth dark chocolate; faint, butter-diffused, warm, woodsy spice; faint red berry; and very faint coconut milk/coconut milk chocolate.

This 62% chocolate had a smooth melt, and a creamy, almost silken mouthfeel and texture. The coconut was fully incorporated into the chocolate. (Not one small chewy coconut shred was detected.)

Flavor notes included: flavorful, sweet then bittersweet dark chocolate; red berry; and very faint authentic coconut. This chocolate had a very satisfying, ("single origin-y"* chocolate-y) finish.

I loved the well-balanced complexity (and harmony of flavors) in this bar, and the fact that it wasn't overly sweet. Most 62% cacao chocolates taste quite a bit sweeter. Unfortunately, that often means that sugar (or sugar and milk(s)) eclipse cacao flavor nuances that may be present. Today's coconut milk bar was neither too sugary, nor overly coconut-y; and it embraced the red berry and rich notes of the Tanzania cacao. It tasted like a naturally sweetened chocolate with much to share.

Maker's tasting notes ("What we taste"): "ripe red raspberries, coconut water, (sometimes cinnamon)" "This bar is also a chameleon -- after certain foods, it has the unmistakable flavor of sweet cinnamon."**

Ingredients: Cacao beans*, cane sugar*, cocoa butter*, coconut* (*Organic ingredients)

Allergen-related information: "Made on shared equipment that processes nuts and dairy."

*Single origin chocolates tend to have richer, more unadulterated flavors. And small batch single origin chocolate makers are more likely to want to preserve (and highlight) unique, multi-layered varietal flavors. A big thank you to these makers.

**I later re-tasted this bar with bourbon pecan ice cream and that muted spice note detected in the aroma came into greater focus; and sure enough it was cinnamon.

Aroma notes included: chocolate (flavorful milk* chocolate, warm rich cocoa), coconut milk and very faint sweet green and faint sweet dried palm fruit (dates).*

The texture was creamy, then velvety, with a light, almost airy, mouthfeel.

Flavor notes included the aroma notes above but with more rich chocolate and coconut milk.

I liked the well balanced and complementary flavors, but this chocolate was a bit too sweet for me. (Sugar was the number one ingredient.)

Welcome to Day #1 of Chocolate and Coconut Theme Week.

Today's Crystallized Ginger Coconut Milk Chocolate 55% Cacao (bar) was made from bean to bar by Stone Grindz Chocolate (Scottsdale, AZ). Chocolate makers Kasey McCaslin and Steven Shipler craft small batch single origin chocolate bars, and several chocolates with flavor inclusions.

The award-winning coconut milk-based chocolate was made using cacao beans grown in Peru.

Aroma notes for this 55% cacao exotic chocolate included: relatively faint but rich, smooth chocolate; ginger; tart green-lemon herb; and very faint coconut milk and vanilla.

The base chocolate had a creamy, almost silky melt and texture. And a generous array of chewy candied ginger pieces added texture as well as flavor.

Flavor notes included: smooth chocolate, sweet spikes of candied ginger, lemongrass (oil) and a barely detectable dash of sea salt. There was a lot going on with this bar, but the flavors were balanced.

Welcome to Day #7 of Chocolate and Coffee Theme Week, and Day #1 of Chocolate and Vietnam Theme Week.

Today's Mocha plant-based beverage was from Little Green Cyclo (Brisbane, CA). The company, founded in 2010, has built a following around their Vietnamese food in the San Francisco Bay Area.

In 2019, the company started gearing up to add new coffee flavors. Happily for us, they weathered the economic changes the Covid-19 pandemic presented and now offer delicious Vietnamese (plant-based) coffees to enjoy.

Speaking of weather, today was another in a series of 90+ degrees F. (32.2+ C.) days. So this refrigerated coffee/mocha was extra refreshing.

This Mocha coffee beverage was designed to "serve chilled or over ice." Being colder, the aroma notes were a bit more subtle, but still conveyed an attractive rich coffee, cream, and very faint coconut mocha cream scent.

Flavor notes for this mocha beverage included: Rich aromatic coffee (made with robusta and arabica coffee grown in Vietnam), and mocha-light coconut cream.

One can contained a hefty 200 mg of caffeine. Being sensitive to caffeine, I enjoyed a (smaller) 1/2 can portion, even though I would've been delighted to have more.*

Texture: light and creamy (almost fluffy)**. The coconut milk seemed lighter than dairy cream/condensed milk one might usually find. Vegetable gums also contributed to the texture. Shaking the can before opening is recommended. ("Refrigerate after opening. Some coconut milk separation is natural."). I didn't find this to be an issue.

Flavor notes included: rich and satisfying iced coffee + coconut (milk + cream) + chocolate powder (Guittard) with a smidge of vanilla. This drink was made with high-quality ingredients. I enjoyed the highly complementary and subtly complex flavors--and the fact that this mocha wasn't too sweet.

Ingredients: Filtered Water, Coconut Milk (Coconut Cream, Water), Coffee (Filtered Water, Robusta & Arabica Coffee), Coconut Condensed Milk (Coconut Cream, Filtered Water, Cane Sugar, Guar Gum, Sea Salt), Guittard Chocolate Powder (Cane Sugar, Cocoa, Unsweetened Chocolate, Vanilla), Gum Acacia, Gellan Gum, Himalyan Pink Salt, Nitrogen

Allergen-related information: Contains Coconut. Manufactured in a facility that uses dairy and tree nuts. Vegan, Gluten Free

*Vietnamese coffee is typically made with robusta (or mostly with robusta) coffee, which has more caffeine than arabica coffee. As the name suggests, robusta coffee beans also provide robust and intense flavor. I liked the choice to include a blend of robust and aromatic (arabica) coffee beans from Vietnam.

** This can of coffee contained a small amount of Nitrogen (released with a tiny whisp of aerosol when the can was opened) that can create a smoother (textural) tasting experience. Nitrogen can also help preserve flavors (slow down/prevent oxidation process).

Welcome to Day #4 of Chocolate and Coconut Theme Week.

Today's Dark Chocolate Dairy-Free Chocolate frozen dessert made with Organic Coconut milk was created by Koolfi Creamery (San Leandro, CA).

The company is a local (San Francisco Bay Area), small batch frozen dessert maker (ice creams and vegan/dairy free (coconut milk-based frozen desserts), that offers a variety of India-inspired flavors (mango lassi, kheer rice pudding, cardamom, kulfi, and many more).

Aroma and flavor notes for this Dark Chocolate vegan frozen dessert included: dark cocoa (powder), and it had both a smooth texture and a very slight graininess.*

Ingredients: Organic coconut milk (coconut, water), organic brown rice syrup, sugar, maltodextrin, Dutch processed cocoa powder, chocolate (cacao beans, sugar, sunflower lecithin, vanilla), dextrose, tapioca flour, xanthan gum, Himalayan pink salt

Allergen-related information: "Coconut. Product is made on equipment that processes milk, eggs, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, soy"

*It was not clear whether this batch may have acquired this slight graininess from the ingredients (cocoa powder?), or whether it was process, storage or transport related, e.g. a slight melting and re-freezing again before I bought it. The other (five) ice cream flavors I've tried from this same company (all very good, none with cocoa powder/chocolate) were creamy and smooth and did not have this textural characteristic.

Welcome to Day #2 of Chocolate and Coconut Theme Week. No chocolate coconut eggs or coconut macaroons this (Easter, Passover, Ramadan) weekend; but, after a winter full of storms, the sunny spring day outside is cause enough for celebration.

Today's Cosmic Bliss Chocolate Euphoria Organic Grass-Fed Dairy ice cream, was distributed by Bliss Unlimited LLC (Eugene, OR). (Cosmic Bliss is a HumanCo brand.)

Cosmic Bliss (formerly Coconut Bliss) became known for its coconut milk-based, non-dairy frozen desserts. However, in 2022, after 17 years of being solely plant-based, grass-fed, organic dairy-based flavors were added to expand their line up as part of a re-branding.

Today's Chocolate Euphoria flavor's dairy milk and cream were paired with coconut syrup and a healthy dose of cocoa. This ice cream had a welcoming texture--a velvety melt and mouthfeel--and a strong, serious cocoa powder aroma and flavor. A subtle trace of vanilla extract added a little welcome uplift.

Ingredients: Organic, fair trade whole milk; organic, fair trade heavy cream; organic, fair trade coconut syrup; organic, fair trade cocoa (processed with alkali); organic, fair trade non-fat milk; organic, fair trade egg yolk; organic, fair trade guar gum; organic, fair trade vanilla extract.

Allergen-related information: Contains milk, egg, coconut.
