Keto Foods - Keto Pint Sea Salt Caramel Ice Cream Bars - Feb. 24, 2023

Chocolate of the Day

Keto Pint Sea Salt Caramel Ice Cream Bars

Weight: 3 fl. oz. (65 g.) / 12 fl. oz. oz. (356 mL) in total box of 4 bars
Calories: 160 calories in 1 bar
Cost: $3.99 for 1 box of 4 bars
Purchased from: Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #10 of Chocolate and Golden Sugars Theme Week--a week that has included chocolates with caramel, toffee...and at least one item with real gold (leaf).

Today's Keto Pint Sea Salt Caramel ice cream bars were "manufactured for UpStar Nutrition Inc." (Clackamas, OR)* and are part of a line of Keto Certified low-sugar offerings from Keto Foods (Scottsdale, AZ).*

Keto Pint* took the (thick and gooey sweet) caramel concept in a different direction, offering a Sea Salt Caramel ice cream bar with "no added sugars" (2 G. Net Carbs). Is it possible to create satisfying caramel flavor with erythritol, stevia and monk fruit?

Aroma notes for this Keto Certified, Kosher ice cream bar included: dark chocolate, vanilla (cookie), faint caramel/butterscotch, and very faint mellow nut and wood.

A thin, crispy keto dark chocolate shell enclosed a relatively light, flavorful ice cream center. The texture and melt were appealing. Like many chocolate coated ice cream bars, you may want to eat this one over a plate to prevent an errant shard of chocolate from dropping in your lap.

The dark chocolate tasted like real chocolate. And the authentic, creamy center had surprisingly good vanilla and caramel and rich ice cream flavor. (Real cream being the number one ingredient didn't hurt.)

The flavors were well balanced; and this ice cream bar wasn't too sweet. (Thank you!) I would definitely buy these again in the future. The overall taste was far better than most "diet" or sugar free chocolate items.

There was no sense of compromise in terms of flavor and texture. And yes it is possible to enjoy caramel flavor without a lot of gooey, sweet caramel (sugar).

Ingredients: Cream, water, chocolate coating (unsweetened chocolate, coconut oil, erythritol, cocoa butter, sunflower lecithin, MCT oil, steviol glycosides, vanilla extract), egg yolk, erythritol, chicory root fiber, milk protein concentrate, tapioca fiber, natural flavor, vegetable glycerin, sea salt, guar gum, steviol glycosides, annatto extract, monkfruit extract, xanthan gum, gum acacia.

Allergen-related information: Contains milk, egg (and coconut (oil)). "This product has been processed on equipment that processes milk, peanuts, tree nuts, and wheat."

*The Keto Pint ice cream brand was "created (in 2018) by two brothers with a vision to help accelerate the transition to lower sugar foods." (Keto Pint Ice Cream was formerly known as UpStar Ice Cream.) In 2021 Keto Pint transitioned to Keto Foods. The company's main office is based in Scottsdale, AZ.

Welcome to Day #1 of Chocolate, Coffee and Vanilla Theme Week. The hunt for these three flavors led to Santa Cruz, CA.

Today's mini-bar sized Dark Chocolate Coffee Caramel and Dark Chocolate Vanilla Ice Cream and Almonds ice cream bar were created by Donnelly Chocolates (Santa Cruz, CA).

Thank you to Nick for counter assistance at Donnelly's and help in finding and selecting these two deluxe-sized chocolate, coffee and vanilla offerings, also known as dinner.

The Dark Chocolate Caramel bar was filled with everything you'd expect to find. The coffee flavor harmonized well with the dark chocolate, and the soft, caramel filling. The coffee helped balance the sweetness.

Now, on to the next course in this chocolate dinner. The vanilla ice cream in this Dark Chocolate Vanilla Almonds ice cream bar was from Marianne's Ice Cream (another local Santa Cruz, CA, sweets favorite). This tasty bar was a satisfying, cut above your standard store-bought ice cream bar for sure.

Cost: $ missing information for 1 package of 3 bars
Purchased from: Safeway, Palo Alto, CA

Today's Magnum Double Cherry Truffle bars were from Unilever, the ice cream colossus* based in Englewood Cliffs, NJ.

Each individually-wrapped bar contained cherry ice cream with a "dark chocolate ganache swirl, dipped in a chocolatey coating, cherry sauce and milk chocolate." Complicated and mysterious, in a good way.

Made with Belgian chocolate, this bar was quite tasty, even if the long list of ingredients was a little off-putting.

*Unilever and Nestle are the global market leaders in ice cream. According to one source, Unilever owned an estimated 400 different brands worldwide in 2016.

Purchased from: Safeway (missing location information)

Welcome to Day #11 of Celebrating 12 Years of Chocolate Series, and Day #1 of Chocolate and Ice Cream Theme Week.

Continuing the chocolate and hazelnut ice cream thread started with yesterday's Turkish Choco Hazelnut ice cream, and in response to a last blast of hot summer weather, today's chocolate came fresh from the freezer: Magnum Double Chocolate Hazelnut ice cream bars from Unilever (Englewood Cliffs, NJ).

Each ice cream bar was composed of chocolate hazelnut ice cream dipped in a "chocolatey coating," hazelnut sauce and milk chocolate.

Constructed with satisfying layers of cool, rich sweetness, ice cream and chocolate, the hazelnut flavor in this bar was very subtle.

*"Magnum cocoa comes from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms." This bar was "made with Belgian chocolate."

Julie's - Organic Vanilla Ice Cream, Almonds, Dark Chocolate bar - Mar. 25, 2017

Chocolate of the Day:

Julie's Organic Ice Cream

Organic Vanilla Ice Cream, Almonds and Dark Chocolate

Calories: 250 calories in 1 bar
Cost: $3.99 (estimate) for 1 box of 3 bars
Purchased from: Grocery Outlet, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #7 of Chocolate and Ice Cream Bar Theme Week.

Today's Julie's Organic Ice Cream bar was made with "Organic Vanilla Ice Cream, Almonds and Dark Chocolate" and distributed by Oregon Ice Cream (Eugene, OR)*.

Happily the ingredients list for these bars was a bit shorter than most other mass produced ice cream bars.

Although the organic vanilla ice cream still contained vegetable gums (organic guar gum and organic locust bean gum), even the additives used to stabilize, thicken or emulsify seemed to be of a higher quality than found elsewhere.

This sweet, light-tasting bar was an organic, high-end take on a a classic, chocolate-covered, vanilla ice cream bar with bits of almonds adding some crunchy texture. The thin chocolate shell was authentic tasting, although a bit gummy after a few chews.

Frozen chocolate, by definition, won't taste like a dark chocolate bar; so it's unfair to expect this. But on a hot day it can be refreshing.

*Oregon Ice Cream brands include Julie's Organic, Alden's Organic and Cascade Glacier.

Welcome to Day #6 of Chocolate and Ice Cream Bar Theme Week.

Today we're sampling one more ice cream bar flavor from the Magnum ice cream bar line from Unilever (Englewood Cliffs, NJ): The Magnum Double Chocolate ice cream bar.

What is double chocolate? "Answer: Chocolate ice cream dipped in a chocolatey coating, chocolatey sauce and milk chocolate."

I enjoyed this rich chocolate bar, especially its incorporation of chocolate sauce into the bar (a tidy but extravagant layer sandwiched between the chocolate ice cream and the chocolatey coating). It made this bar seem a little decadent.

The bar was made with Belgian chocolate. And, according to the packaging, the cocoa used in these bars came from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.

Welcome to Day #5 of Chocolate and Ice Cream Bar Theme Week.

Today we have a double feature with two different Magnum ice cream bars from the growing family of Magnum ice cream bars from Unilever.

Yesterday, Magnum's Dark Chocolate ice cream bar, and today the Magnum Chocolate Infinity and Magnum Double Raspberry ice cream bars.

First, thank you to the person who came up with the title "Chocolate Infinity." What a great concept.

At the core of these Infinity bars, was dark chocolate ice cream with a chocolate swirl that was covered in dark chocolate and cocoa bean nibs. It was very satisfying as ice cream bars go; the bar was creamy and smooth, with layers of smooth, rich chocolatey flavors, with a slight crunch from the tiny nib pieces.

The relatively new Magnum Double Raspberry ice cream bars were a bit more brash, in a good way—bursting with sweet, authentic raspberry and milk chocolate flavors from the first bite. Much as I like to avoid too much sugar, I really liked this bar.

The Double Raspberry bar had the concentrated flavor of a darker chocolate confection with raspberry jam, but with some ice cream to cool things down and balance the sugar a bit. If you like raspberries, this is the bar for you.

If you're interested in a combination of today's two different flavors, you might seek out the Magnum Chocolate Infinity and Raspberry ice cream bars featured last year (on March 2, 2016).

Welcome to Day #4 of Chocolate and Ice Cream Bar theme week.

This week the focus is on ice cream bars from larger companies. (Smaller production run ice cream bars and paletas from local artisans will have their own week later this year.)

Large or small, companies need to make bars that won't fall apart, and that also taste good. The chocolate coating on an ice cream bar needs to be not too hard or stiff, but not too soft either. Ice cream needs to stay creamy and flavorful and not become granular if temperatures fluctuate.

Unilever (Englewood Cliffs, NJ) now owns several large ice cream brands (including Magnum) in the U.S., and has experience with these challenges. Today's Magnum Dark Chocolate bar was one of the original member of an expanding family of Magnum ice cream bars.

One can almost see and taste the evolution of this line of ice cream bars. For example, at some point several years ago, someone must have been asking: How do you take a plain, standard vanilla ice cream bar vanilla bean ice cream dipped in chocolate and make it more appealing to higher-end consumers?

Today's bar, enveloped in a golden wrapper, uses quality vanilla and chocolate: 60% cacao Belgian Chocolate, and Rainforest Certified cocoa and vanilla—not something you'd see with less expensive bars. The chocolate tasted a bit better than most chocolatey coatings  out there and the vanilla ice cream did as well.

Natural flavors and coloring agents have improved. Now, if there was a way to magically get rid of some of the additives* that seem to be in most ice cream bars, that would be a true leap forward.

*Additives include mono and diglycerides, locust bean gum, guar gum, carrageenan, and PGPR (emulsifiers).

Ben and Jerry's - Cherry Garcia ice cream bar - Mar. 21, 2017

Welcome to Day #3 of Chocolate and Ice Cream Bar Theme Week.

Before there was today's Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream bar, there was Cherry Garcia ice cream.

The name Cherry Garcia (a riff on musician Jerry Garcia, of The Grateful Dead) was inspired by a customer suggestion. Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream was first released in February 1987, almost nine years after the company was founded.*

The original Cherry Garcia ice cream had a base of vanilla ice cream (Ben and Jerry's first flavor) with whole Bing cherries and smaller than usual chunks of chocolate, according to a press release.

Over the years* the base ice cream for this popular flavor became cherry ice cream instead of vanilla, and the pieces of cherry became smaller.

Unfortunately, I found myself comparing today's bar—with a sweet, but somewhat bland cherry ice cream with three different vegetable gums** and a dark "chocolatey" coating—with the original ice cream.

It's challenging to create an ice cream bar without modifying some ingredients. However, some changes are more noticeable than others. For example, for the first few bites, I saw no cherry pieces. Later, I did run into a few. (Note: I've not tried Cherry Garcia Ice Cream in many years, and the whole brand and formula has likely changed in the past decade.)

On the positive side, this tasting experience inspired me to make some homemade ice cream with a great vanilla base, whole bing cherries and small high-quality dark chocolate shavings. Back to the future. Thank you to Ben and Jerry for the original inspiration.

*Ben and Jerry's co-founders, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, opened their business in May 1978 in a renovated gas station in Vermont. In April 2000, Ben and Jerry's was acquired by the Anglo-Dutch food giant, Unilever (London, UK), the company that also owns Breyer's and Good Humor ice cream brands.

**Today's Cherry Garcia Ice Cream bar contained locust bean gum, xanthan gum and guar gum.

Purchased from: Safeway, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #1 of Ice Cream Bar Theme Week. Yes, it's only March, but it's never too early, or too cold outside, for ice cream here at Chocolate Banquet.

Today's bars were a quick pick from a local Safeway grocery store frozen case: Lucerne Dairy Farms Vanilla Flavored Ice Cream Bars with Almond Toffee Candy Pieces and a Chocolatey Coating (artificial flavor added).

The vanilla ice cream filling was soft, cold and creamy, and the caramel-colored toffee pieces had sort of melted into the ice cream. The "chocolatey" coating served it's purpose as a smooth covering, but I'd call it chocolate "lite" in terms of flavor. (Not everyone is looking for serious dark chocolate, and these were relatively inexpensive.)

The long ingredient list for these bars included milk, cream, sugar, almond toffee candy, coconut oil and chocolate liquor. It also included mono and diglycerides, guar gum, locust bean gum, polysorbate 80, carrageenan, etc.—additives that I'd just as soon leave out of my chocolate items, but these may be OK for some.

Hope you all are enjoying summer. This morning I found relief from the warm weather with the first of several cold chocolate items. It was Day #1 of Chilled Chocolate Week.

Today's box of 3 Chocolate Hazelnut AAlto-mond Ice Cream Bars from Coolhaus (Los Angeles, CA) was one of a mouth-watering array of custom-made and pre-packaged ice cream creations (sandwiches—aka sammies, bars, pints, etc.) from the company.

Co-founders (Natasha Case and Freya Estreller) create "architecturally inspired gourmet ice cream." Check out their website for a complete explanation.

Today's individually-wrapped bar started with a core of chocolate hazelnut ice cream that was dipped in salted milk chocolate, and then rolled in roasted almonds. Hard to go wrong there. The result was a well balanced blend of creamy, crunchy, chocolatey and nutty. And this rich bar was also gluten free.

Examples of what you might find in a Coolhaus Culver City (or other shop) included ice cream and cookie pies, where you select your favorite combination of cookie crust, ice cream filling and cookie crumbles (topping). Peanut Butter Captain Crunch ice cream pie anyone?

Welcome to Day #2 of Chocolate, Caramel and Toffee Week, as I transition away from three weeks of chocolate items with salt.

We start this week with an echo from last week's salted caramel series, with today's Magnum Gold!? ice cream bar swathed in a bright, shiny gold wrapper.

Today's box of 3 Magnum frozen ice cream bars was from Unilever (Englewood Cliffs, NJ).

These almost amber-colored bars were described as "vanilla bean ice cream with sea salt caramel swirl, dipped in a golden chocolatey coating."

The (Belgian) chocolate,* the inner coating layer, was relegated to a colorful decorative accent color in these stylish bars.

Unilever's Magnum line includes several flavors. One of the first Magnum ice cream bars I had was a "Double Caramel" ice cream bars. The company also offers a Sea Salt Caramel ice cream bar.

*These bars were made with Rainforest Alliance Certified Cocoa and Vanilla.

Today was Day #2 of Chocolate, Cherry and Raspberry Week.

What is Chocolate Infinity? I wasn't sure, but I liked the sound of it.

Today's Magnum Chocolate Infinity and Raspberry ice cream bars were made of "Dark chocolate ice cream with a raspberry swirl, dipped in dark (Belgian) chocolate and cocoa bean nibs"—all this, frozen, on a stick.

Each Magnum ice cream bar was sealed in its own gold foil wrapper. When unwrapped (best to use scissors to open at one end), this frozen treat looked a bit like a typical chocolate covered ice cream bar.

But this bar delivered a complex, bittersweet, layered flavorful experience—with sweet raspberry fruit high notes, and cocoa nibs that added tiny bursts of extra dark, crunchy cocoa essence. It was a very indulgent and enjoyably sophisticated ice cream experience. I don't know if kids will like these, but this adult sure did.

The bar contained Rainforest Alliance Certified Cocoa.

Due to an abundance of chocolates with overlapping inclusions, some chocolate theme weeks flow into the next. Today was one of those days. Welcome to Day #6 of Chocolate and Frozen Desserts Theme Week; and Day #1 of Chocolate and Mint Theme Week.

Today I enjoyed a refreshing peppermint bark ice cream bar from Haagen-Dazs (distributed by Nestle Dreyers Ice Cream Company, Oakland, CA).

A core of white chocolate ice cream was dipped in dark chocolate and peppermint candy pieces. The chocolate and mint flavors were well balanced -- neither too sweet or too minty.

These Limited Edition individually-wrapped peppermint bark ice cream bars came packaged 3 to a box.

Today was Day #5 of Chocolate and Coffee Theme Week.

Leaves may be turning red, and kids may be back in school, but we're a long way from brisk fall weather. It was another hot day this morning. So, I reached into the freezer and chose a Jamoca ice cream bar -- made with "Jamoca Ice Cream Dipped in Dark Chocolate Flavored Coating" -- from Baskin-Robbins (Canton, MA).

It was like having a frozen latte with a little dark chocolate flavor whirled in for good measure -- a sweet, cool combination for very warm weather.

Baskin-Robbins, a large national ice cream store chain, is part of the Dunkin' Brands Group, Inc. The ice cream-centered company has continued to bring out new flavors and products, even as the local ice cream shops maintain a timeless quality imbued with childhood memories for many of us. I may be less thrilled with the festively neon colors and the ice cream cakes than I once was; but I still enjoy seeing the bright pink, white and navy blue Baskin-Robbins logo when I pass by my local store(s).

Today was the second day of Chocolate and Coconut Theme Week.

These Mini sized "So Delicious" Coconut Milk, non-dairy frozen dessert bars from Turtle Mountain (Eugene, OR) tasted like a South Pacific version of a Fudgsicle (tm) -- that is, like creamy frozen chocolate mousse on a stick. The coconut flavor was fairly subtle.

It was an uncomfortably hot day today, so a second Mini Fudge Bar followed later this afternoon. At 80 calories for 1 bar, it was easy to justify another bar. Being organic, gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, etc. also made these an easy choice for me.

Reese's has done a great job extending their brand to a variety of product offerings. I've enjoyed most of them. I like Reese's peanut butter cups and I like ice cream. The frozen chocolate coating has to stand up to freezing temperatures as well as contact with warm hands. I'm not wild about the texture and taste of most chocolate coatings like this; however, this coating worked, and looks like it was made without hydrogenated oils.

Today the cool weather moved in, and it rained. This got me thinking of polar bears and other animals that live in cold climates. I prefer warmer climates, but I have thought about traveling up to Northern Canada or Alaska to see the wildlife and Northern Lights. That said, the closest I may get to a polar bear may be looking at one in the zoo, or on a Klondike box of ice cream bars. I liked the smaller size of these bars.

Organics
Organic Blackberry Ice Cream Bar with Dark Chocolate Coating
Weight: 3 fl. oz. (89 mL) bar / 9 fl. oz. (266 mL) total package of 3 bars

Chocolate-covered ice cream bars bring back fond summer memories, as does black raspberry ice cream - which we were once (atypically) allowed to eat in cups and cones in our back yard, in bare feet, when we were growing up -- probably during a heat wave one summer. I still remember how good it tasted.

So, it is no surprise perhaps that, I really enjoyed the Organics brand of Blackberry Ice Cream with Dark Chocolate (coating) frozen ice cream bars that my daughter and I were sampling this evening. They were very good.
