Morro Bay House of Jerky - Dark Chocolate Bacon Bar - Sept. 27, 2019

Chocolate of the Day:

Morro Bay House of Jerky
Dark Chocolate Bacon Bar
Good ++
Weight: 1.6 oz. (45 g.) in one piece
Calories: 240 calories (estimate) in 1 bar
Cost: $3.99 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Morro Bay House of Jerky, Morro Bay, CA

Welcome to Day #2 of Chocolate and Cowboy Country Theme Week.

Today's Dark Chocolate Chipotle Bacon Bar was made for the Morro Bay House of Jerky—located in the scenic coastal town of Morro Bay, CA—in an area where ocean and beach lovers, college students, wine country visitors and Cowboy country folks mix, work and enjoy life by the sea.

The "Chocolate Covered Bacon" sign caught my attention as we were walking by, admiring the view of the ocean and of Morro Rock. Inside was an impressive array of domestic and exotic jerky, including a mushroom (vegetarian) option, including two dark bars with bacon. Sold.

The dark chocolate in this bar (made by by Mama Ganache *(San Luis Obispo, CA) was velvety and tasted quite a bit better than your average dark chocolate bar. Pieces of real bacon added a pleasing savory twist and some soft chewy texture. A well-done implementation of this blend.

Cost: $3.99 for 1 piece
Purchased from: Morro Bay House of Jerky, Morro Bay, CA

Welcome to Day #1 of Chocolate and Cowboy Country Theme Week.

The bulk of this week's chocolates were acquired on the Central Coast of California, where there are ranches, farms and frequent glimpses of wide open spaces between cities. A landscape where one might even find a cowboy.

Chocolate Banquet is based in the San Francisco Bay Area (peninsula)—an area with a rich agricultural and ranch history that was still visible even one generation ago. Empty lots now are few and far between, and parks (some former ranches and farms) form most of the open spaces now.

Today's chocolate was a strip of Chocolate Covered Bacon made for Morro Bay House of Jerky (Morro Bay, CA) by Mama Ganache (San Luis Obispo, CA), known for their confections and bars made with ethically-sourced cacao.

The dark chocolate was silky smooth and not ultra-sweet (thank you); and it provided a great pairing with the chewy-crunchy savory bacon. (The bacon was hardwood smoked and honey cured.)

The House of Jerky offers an impressive variety of beef and other domestic and exotic (and vegetarian) packaged jerky flavors. See if you can find the hidden cowboy while you're there.*

A special thank you to Mike J. (pictured behind the counter) who provided valuable and friendly assistance in chocolate item selection when we visited there recently.

*The company's logo incorporates a cowboy (or perhaps a ranch cook) ringing a triangle.**

** A triangle is a rod or bar of metal bent into an open triangular-shape that is "played" by striking another metal rod against/inside the triangle, often in a a circular motion. This instrument (in various forms) dates back to 14th century Europe, and perhaps further. And while you may find this percussive instrument in an orchestra playing Mozart or Beethoven pieces, a metal/iron triangle was also used on farms/ranches in the Western U.S. to summon ranch/farm hands to a meal.

Trader Joe's - Uncured Bacon Ganache Bar - Dec. 25, 2015

Weight: 1.5 oz. (42.5 g.) / 3 oz. (85 g.) in total bar
Calories: 220 calories in 1/2 bar
Cost: $1.99 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Trader Joe's, Mountain View, CA

Today was Day #4 of Chocolate, Smoke and Fire Theme Week.

Merry Christmas today to all those who celebrate!

Today we continue with chocolates that have smokey and/or fiery flavors. Santa must smell like a smoke-cured ham for days after visiting all those chimneys on Christmas Eve. I don't know of too many ham chocolates (honey-baked smoked ham bar anyone?), but bacon is a relatively popular inclusion.

This Uncured Bacon Ganache Bar from Trader Joe's (Monrovia, CA) was filled with a chocolate, caramel and slightly smoky flavored bacon ganache. It was nicely balanced and not too sweet. I'm a sucker for alder wood smoked salt (and umami flavored foods in general), so this filled 70 percent cacao bar was an enjoyable gift this morning.

Chuao Chocolatier - baconluxious bar - Dec. 24, 2015

Weight: 2.8 oz. (80 g.) in total bar
Calories: 420 calories in 1 bar
Cost: $5.99 for 1 bar

Today was Day #3 of Chocolate, Smoke and Fire Theme Week.

What's the best breakfast on a winter morning? How about a chocolate bar with "...maple sweetness, a sprinkle of bonfire smoked sea salt and crispy, uncured bacon in milk chocolate?"

That description fits today's baconluxious bar from Chuao Chocolatier (Carlsbad, CA). This bar had balanced, subtle flavors—with a hint of maple sweetness and a subtle hint of smoky bacon saltiness.

Merry Christmas Eve to all who celebrate. Best wishes to Santa as you shimmy down those chimneys tonight.

McSteven's Inc. - Redneck Cafe Bacon Hot Chocolate - Oct. 20, 2015

Chocolate of the Day:

McSteven's Inc.
Redneck Cafe - Bacon Hot Chocolate
Good
Weight: .62 oz. (21.9 g.) / 1.25 oz. (35 g.) in total packet
Calories: 65 calories in 1/2 packet
Cost: $1.49 for 1 packet
Purchased from: Bass Pro Shops - Outdoor World, Rocklin, CA

Today was Day #5 of Chocolate and The Great Outdoors Theme Week.

I like chocolate; and I like bacon. Both were part of my favorite outdoor camp breakfasts. So heck yeah, I'll try this Bacon-flavored Hot Chocolate. As it turns out, that sentiment was nearly identical to the tagline printed on the package of today's hot chocolate, which read: "Heck Ya...I'll Try That." I do like to try new things.

Created and distributed by McSteven's Inc. (Vancouver, WA), this single-serving packet of hot chocolate mix was convenient to "heat and eat" outdoors. Just add hot water, and stir.

McSteven's sells a variety of hot chocolate and beverage mixes (some creatively packaged for Halloween this week). And scenes of people fishing in beautiful outdoor places adorn some of their coffee packaging.

How did this "redneck" hot chocolate taste? Better than I thought it would. The bacon flavor was subtle, and a bit like the soy bacon bits I remember eating on buttered sourdough toast as a child that had a slight smokey and salty flavor. And the texture was smooth. When you're out in the great outdoors, in the cool, clean, crisp autumn air, everything seems to taste a little better.

Rocket Fizz - Bacon Chocolate Soda - June 5, 2015

Chocolate of the Day:

Lester's Fixin's

Calories: 75 calories (estimate) for 1/3 bottle
Cost: N/A - gift
Purchased from: N/A - gift (Thank you Megan!)

Today was Day #11 of Chocolate Tea and Beverage Theme Weeks.

My daughter supplied me with two unique chocolate sodas. I wrote about the Chocolate Soda yesterday. Today's item was a bit more complicated.

This Lester's Fixin's Artificial Bacon Soda with Chocolate from Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shops, LLC (Camarillo, CA) made a fun base for a bacon and salted caramel chocolate milkshake.

Garnish with a slice of bacon and you have, arguably, a meal in a glass, if you're willing to forgo fruit and vegetables for the occasion.

Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate + Fig + Rose - Nov. 27, 2014

Chocolate of the Day:

Trader Joe's
Organic Dark Chocolate 73% Cacao Super Dark bar
Good ++ - Very Good
Weight: 1 oz. (28.3 g.) / 3.5 oz. (100 g.) in total bar
Calories: 158 calories for 1 oz. (14.1 g.) piece of chocolate
Cost: $1.99 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Trader Joe's, Palo Alto, CA

Happy Thanksgiving to all in the U.S. I'm thankful for time spent with family, and for all the people growing cacao and making great chocolate.

Today was the last day of Chocolate and Fig Theme Week, and the first day of Chocolate and Rose Theme Week.

With this many food and chocolate flavors intersecting today (I'm giving pumpkin a rest this year), I decided to make a trio of small shotglass desserts with chocolate. What's better than one dessert? Desserts that are so tiny, you can have more than one.

All three of these desserts incorporated chocolate from today's Organic 73% Super Dark bar from Trader Joe's (Monrovia, CA).

The first dessert, served warm, consisted of brandy-marinated figs, atop a layer of chopped bacon, topped with a layer of melted dark chocolate in a shotglass.

The second tiny dessert was a fig bread pudding -- with chopped figs and gluten-free raisin cinnamon toast, topped with chopped pecans, cinnamon, freshly grated nutmeg, and chocolate shavings.

Last but not least, the third small glass was filled with greek yogurt flavored with rosehip jam, rosewater and cardamom, and topped with chopped, roasted and salted pistachio nuts. and chocolate shavings.

The Trader Joe's Super Dark bar was smooth, dark fun, with fudgy and nutty flavors. This organic bar was perfect by itself, or for livening up a dessert.

Vosges - Smoky Tellicherry Bar - July 28, 2014

Chocolate of the Day:

Vosges Haut-Chocolat
Smoky Tellicherry Bar
Good ++
Weight: 1.5 oz. (42.5 g.) / 3 oz. (85 g.) in total bar
Calories: 240 calories in 1/2 bar
Cost: $5.99 for 1 bar
Purchased from: The Fresh Market, Palo Alto, CA

Today was Day #4 of Smoke and Savory Theme Week.

The Smoky Tellicherry Bar from Vosges Haut-Chocolat (Chicago, IL) had both smoke and savory elements, and a black peppery kick from coarsely ground Tellicherry* peppercorns and bits of uncured peppercorn bacon.

Vosges founder Katrina Markhoff and team have elevated the art of bacon and chocolate over the past decade. The company offers one of the largest "libraries" of bacon bars and products around. The slightly earthy, dark chocolate (72%) bar base eclipsed some of the more subtle savory and bacon flavor nuances in this bar, but overall it was quite good.

At $5.99 this bar was reasonably priced, given the relatively high quality of the flavor additions.

For those who would like to try this particular Vosges bar, you may be in luck if you live in a city with a "The Fresh Market" (a chain of markets with more than 150 locations in the U.S.). This bar was a limited edition made especially for The Fresh Market.

*Charcoal colored and flavorful, dried Tellicherry peppercorns are considered some of the best in the world. According to the packaging, the peppercorns in this bar came from the Malabar Coast of India.

Nut 'n Bean - Bacon Chocolate Peanut Butter - May 31, 2014

Chocolate of the Day:

Nut 'n Bean
Bacon Chocolate Peanut Butter
Good - Good +
Weight: 1 oz. (28.3 g.) (estimate) / 8 oz. (227 g.) total jar
Calories: 190 calories (estimate) in 2 Tbsp.
Cost: $9.00 (estimate)
Purchased from: Nut 'n Bean table at Palo Alto Farmers Market, Palo Alto, CA

Holy breakfast on toast Batman. This peanut butter spread had it all, or at least all the good stuff, like bacon and chocolate. It was soft and easy to spread, and I liked the chewy bits of savory bacon that were interspersed throughout. The chocolate gave it an added richness, without making this peanut butter too sweet.

Gently trowel some of this spread onto your bread of choice, add a lettuce leaf and a slice of extra bacon), or some chopped peanuts. Serve with a small glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice on the side and you can talk yourself into calling this combination a balanced meal.

Ingredients: peanuts, grapeseed oil, dairy free 51% chocolate, bacon and sea salt.

Socola Jameson Whiskey truffle - April 15, 2013

Chocolate of the Day:

Socola Chocolatier
Jameson Whiskey truffle
Good - Good +
Weight: .375 oz. (10.6 g.) in 1 truffle / 4.5 oz. (127 g.) in total 12-piece box
Calories: 112 calories (estimate) for 2 pieces
Cost: $24.95 for 12-piece box
Purchased from: Socola Chocolatier table at SF Chocolate Salon, San Francisco, CA

Happy April 15th -- more commonly known as tax filing deadline day in the U.S. Turning to sweeter things, today was also the first day of Chocolate and Spirits Theme Week.

Whether you're celebrating a refund or writing a check to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), you might be able to celebrate with a wee taste of Whiskey today, in chocolate form. I recently picked up a "Hat Trick Collection" box of attractive, bite-sized truffles from Socola Chocolatier (San Francisco, CA) that contained three flavors: Jameson Whiskey*, Bacon and Stout Beer.

The Jameson Whiskey truffle was decorated with a light "Socola" green paisley pattern across the top, and had a creamy dark chocolate ganache infused with whiskey notes.

*One caveat: Jameson Whiskey may be a seasonal flavor; and if so, I'm happy to have caught the last train to chocolate and whiskey happyland.

The Bacon truffles in this box were very good. I believe this truffle was the same as, or a close relative of, Socola's "Notorious HOG" truffles, that burst on the scene a few years ago (featured here in 2011).

I did not taste the third flavor, Stout Beer Truffles (decorated with white strokes); however, much enjoyment ensued when sharing these with others.

If these flavors don't excite you, I suggest checking out Socola's Give it to Me Guava (which I look forward to featuring in the future), and their Jasmine truffle (available as part of a tea collection box) which is wonderful if you like floral flavors.

Thank you Wendy, Susan and Harriett (the inspirational flying llama)!

Macrobar + bacon - April 7, 2013

Chocolate of the Day:

GoMacro Inc.
Sunflower Butter and Chocolate Macrobar
Good
Weight: 1.15 oz. (32.5 g.) in 1/2 bar / 2.3 oz. (65 g.) in total bar
Calories: 130 calories in 1/2 bar
Cost: $2.89 (estimate)
Purchased from: Country Sun Natural Foods, Palo Alto, CA

Today was the last day (Day #7) of Chocolate and Pig Theme Week.

I paired a Sunflower Butter and Chocolate Macrobar from GoMacro Inc. (Viola, WI) with a piece of Christine's bacon toffee (also from Wisconsin) that yielded satisfying bits of smokey bacon flavor.

The vegan, macrobiotic and non-GMO Macrobar was chewy, malty and not overly sweet. Other more nuanced flavors I tasted: sunflower seeds and cinnamon. As for the chocolate, the organic, fair trade chocolate liquor incorporated into this bar was very subtle.

Unholy Matrimony
Yes, other than sharing the same home state of Wisconsin, today's health-conscious GoMacro bar had nothing whatsoever to do with bacon, or bacon encased in sugar (bacon toffee). And, in fact, I apologize if I offended anyone.

But, every once in awhile, I enjoy experimenting, bringing unlikely items together in unholy matrimony. Sometimes these odd couplings can yield surprising results. These two items would be fine on a shared dessert plate, but more chocolate would help ignite the "delicious" combination spark.

Chocolate + bacon cookies, April 6, 2013

Chocolate(s) of the Day:

Hagensborg Chocolates
39% cocoa Wild B(o)ar bar
Good - Good+
Weight: .77 oz. (21.6 g.) in 1/3 bar / 2.3 oz. (65 g.) in total bar
Calories: 127 calories in 1/3 bar
Cost: $5.50 (+ shipping)
Purchased from: Hagensborg Chocolates (online)

Today was Day #6 of Chocolate and Pig Theme Week. "Pig" week may not sound elegant, but pigs can be feisty, smart, gluttonous, playful and omnivorous.

I don't know if pigs can fully appreciate chocolate (sadly, some animals can't process chocolate and become ill).  However, if pigs could enjoy the yummy brown sweet stuff, they'd look like the pigs that adorn Hagensborg Chocolates (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) packaging and products. These pigs are enjoying life, with gusto!

Today I enjoyed a bar from the company's Wild B(o)ar single origin line, a milk chocolate (39% cocoa) bar from Ecuador. It was smooth and creamy, with some mild fruit notes, and the faintest possible hint of lemongrass.

I could have imagined the lemongrass note, as I've been stuffed up from spring pollen this week. (Pigs have great senses of smell, which allows them to root out truffles from the ground among other things.) The pig imprinted on the bottom of this bar could probably nail the subtle flavor arc of this bar. However, this pig -- reclining and belching after a chomp and gobble fest that resulted in bites taken out of the bar's edges -- looks too full to offer any tasting feedback.

And, I was also stuffed after this bar...because, earlier today, I baked (and ate) a small batch of gluten free, chocolate chip cookies with bacon and chopped, toasted hazelnuts. Yum. More pig + chocolate than originally planned.

Bacon Toffee bar - April 5, 2013

Chocolate of the Day:

Snake and Butterfly Chocolate
Bacon Toffee bar
Good
Weight: .875 oz. (25 g.) / 1.75 oz. (50 g.) total bar
Calories: 131 calories (estimate) in 1/2 bar
Cost: $5.00 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Snake and Butterfly table at previous Chocolate Salon in San Francisco, CA

Today was Day #5 of Chocolate and Pig Theme Week.

Today's bit of pig involved bacon, incorporated into a chocolate and toffee bar, from bean-to-bar maker Snake and Butterfly Chocolate (Campbell, CA). From what I recall, the company generally uses organic and fair trade cocoa bean to make their chocolates.

In addition to cocoa beans and cocoa butter, this Bacon Toffee bar contained evaporated cane juice, agave nectar and sugar. Some of this sweetness likely came from the toffee formulation. These sweeteners were counteracted somewhat by the rounder, very slightly savory notes from the bacon, butter and sea salt. For those that don't want too much bacon flavor in their chocolate, this bar might be a good choice.

Hungarian Salami, Bacon bar - April 4, 2013

Chocolate of the Day:

L'Amourette LLC
Hungarian Salami and Smoked Bacon bar
Good - Good +
Weight: 2.1 oz. (60 g.) / 3.5 oz. (100 g.) in total bar
Calories:  360 calories in 3/5 bar
Cost: $6.50 for 1 bar
Purchased from: (N/A - from a friend in San Francisco)

Today was Day #4 of Chocolate and Pig Theme Week.

Bravo to L'Amourette Chocolatier (San Francisco, CA) for the rich, dark chocolate (72% cacao) base they used in this bar, and for boldly choosing to make a bar with bacon and salami.

Made with a blend of Rio Caribe and Carenero cacao beans (from Venezuela), "delicately roasted" and "conched for 36 hours," this dark chocolate would be quite nice with citrus peel, ginger, red berries or cherries (L'Amourette carries all these flavors). These stronger flavors can stand up to a darker, more complex, flavor arc.

The right hint of savory, salty flavors generally do very well in bars, this one included. Unfortunately, I felt this darker, more flavorful fine chocolate very nearly eclipsed the pork flavors in this bar.

Having sampled several confections and bars with pork products, I've found I sometimes prefer a deep milk over a darker chocolate base when mixed with bacon. I really enjoyed the smoked bacon and Hungarian salami flavors and textures peppered throughout the glossy domes that made up this bar; I just wanted to taste more of them.

Nosh This - Caramels, bacon - April 3, 2013

Chocolate of the Day:

Nosh This
1.) Meyer Lemon Walnut Salted Caramels
Very Good - Very Good +
Weight: (unknown) had 2 caramels / box of 8 caramels total
Calories: unknown
Cost: $18.00 (estimate) for a box of 8 caramels
Purchased from: Nosh This table at the San Francisco Chocolate Salon, San Francisco, CA

2.) Bacon Salted Caramel Sauce
Very Good
Weight: 1 Tablespoon serving / 8 oz. (190 mL) in one glass jar
Calories: unknown
Cost: $ unknown
Purchased from: Nosh This table at the San Francisco Chocolate Salon, San Francisco, CA

Today was Day #3 of Chocolate and Pig Week.

One of the best chocolate and bacon artists in San Francisco is a man named Kai Kronfield. This morning I sampled two treats from his company, Nosh This (San Francisco, CA).

I imagined pigs celebrating* when I opted first for Nosh This's non-bacon offering, Meyer Lemon Walnut Salted Caramels. These caramels tasted very fresh and were flat-out delicious.

The toasted walnut flavor harmonized very nicely with the salt caramel, dark chocolate, and a hint of Meyer lemon. (No wonder those pigs in the hot air balloon were opening bottles of champagne.*)

The pigs likely became less enthusiastic when I unscrewed the lid on the company's second offering: Bacon Salted Caramel Sauce. If you savor the occasional piece of crispy, salty goodness, this bacon caramel sauce was heaven on a spoon.

Bacon fantasies ensued. Bacon sauce over vanilla ice cream with a little drizzle of chocolate sauce and some toasted nuts. A dab of this sauce atop a short stack of pancakes. However, this bacon caramel sauce was also excellent, all by itself. One tablespoon was enough to experiment; I mixed it with a few other foods, and it was rich enough to leave me feeling plenty satisfied.

Other examples of chocolate and bacon artistry available from this same company: a Three Little Pigs assortment box, with three flavors: Bacon Caramels, Bacon Crack, and Bourbon Bacon Rocky Road.

Fab Delights Bacon truffles - April 2, 2013

Chocolate of the Day:

Fab Delights
Agave Maple Bacon truffles
Good
Weight: 1.29 oz. (36.5 g.) (estimate) in 3 truffles / total box of 9 truffles
Calories: 194 calories in 3 pieces (estimate) in 3 truffles
Cost: $14.25 for 1 box of 9 truffles (at show)
Purchased from: Fab Delights table at SF Chocolate Salon, San Francisco, CA

Today was Day #2 of Chocolate and Pig Theme Week.

"Pigs" are featured (literally and metaphorically) in this week's treats. We entered into chocolate and bacon territory today with a gold box of Agave Maple Bacon truffles from Fab Delights (Oakley, CA).

I enjoyed meeting Fab Delights owner, Jen Missakian, at a recent Chocolate Salon (tradeshow); the company also produces a variety of non-porcine truffles; and they take custom orders as well.

I liked the size of these bacon truffles. They weren't tiny; and they weren't big enough to scare those who might be cautious about pigs and chocolate.

The agave and maple were effective sweeteners, helping to reduce the sugar rush a bit. Fine by me. The very subtle touch of maple was a nice complement to the bacon.

The chocolate ganache (filling) was creamy, with hints of smokey, savory flavor and texture. Each truffle was topped with a small, decorative fragment of chewy bacon. I like my bacon a bit more on the oven-baked and crisp side -- a style that may be harder to execute with bacon candy or chocolates. But, these were fun to try.

More Chocolate Bacon - March 1, 2013

Chocolate(s) of the Day:

Marini's Candies

1.) Milk Chocolate Bacon with Maple Frosting
Good - Good +
Weight: 2.1 oz. (59.4 g.) (estimate) for approximately 2 slices
Calories: Unknown
Cost: $6.95 per 1/4 lb. (approximately 4 slices)
Purchased from: Marini's, Santa Cruz, CA

Today was Day #7 of Chocolate and Umami or Bacon Theme Week.

Bacon tastes good to my L-glutamate taste receptors; that's umami talking. My taste buds and I headed to Marini's Candies (Santa Cruz, CA -- since 1915) yesterday to pick up some chocolate and bacon items.

Umami-loving veggie eaters like me can enjoy a savory turkey or quinoa burger with mushrooms and parmesan cheese, with a little kimchee on the side -- and also covet bacon. Yep. Bacon is one of the main reasons I'm not vegetarian. I've cut back on red meat consumption over the years; however, bacon still beckons. I am an umamiarian.

Despite advances in chicken apple sausage for breakfast, bacon is still the morning meat of choice I believe.

So, move over brunch pastries. Hand me a strip of this milk chocolate covered bacon with a light swizzle of maple icing from Marini's instead.

Yes, these strips were drenched in a lot of sugar sweetness that I don't normally enjoy. The secret was in the perfectly oven-baked, hickory-smoked bacon that Marini's used. The protein, and salty, smoky and umami flavors helped balance out the sugar. The maple flavor was pleasant; and the light touch on the icing was great. Any more frosting would've buried the bacon in a sugar avalanche.

2.) Hot! Milk Chocolate Bacon with Chili (with darker icing)
Good
Weight: 2.1 oz. (59.4) (estimate) for approximately 2 slices
Calories: Unknown
Cost: $6.95 per 1/4 lb. (approx. 4 slices)
Purchased from: Marini's, Santa Cruz, CA

For the adventurous, try Marini's spicy hot Milk Chocolate Bacon with Chili. The spicy chili level was a bit too much for me. I couldn't taste the bacon anymore. However, it may delight others. Perhaps a strip of this bacon could be chopped up with some mild, fresh peppers to snazz up some scrambled eggs?
