Zoe's Chocolate Co.
Peanut Butter Love Bugs
Good + - Good ++
Weight: (unknown)
Calories: (unknown)
Cost: $11.00 + shipping for 1 box of 2 pieces/bugs
Purchased from: Zoe's Chocolate, online order

Welcome to Day #10 of Chocolate and Peanut Theme Week.

Today's Peanut Butter Love Bugs were from Zoe's Chocolate Company (Frederick, MD).

Aroma notes for these heart-shaped pair of ladybug-like Love Bugs included: chocolate and peanut butter (peanut butter cup).

A thin, velvety coat of dark chocolate--decorated with an attractive, rose and pink hued (colored white chocolate) pattern--surrounded a smooth, sweet peanut butter center.

Flavor notes included: a blend of classic, chocolate and peanut butter cup flavors.

I liked: the appearance and classic peanut butter cup flavors. The love bug confections, designed to look like festive ladybugs, were cute. I was less excited about the long list of ingredients that included artificial colors. But, overall these were tasty treats.

Ingredients: Dark Chocolate (cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, sunflower lecithin, natural vanilla), Milk Chocolate (sugar, whole milk powder, cocoa butter, cocoa mass, sunflower lecithin, natural vanilla), White Chocolate (sugar, whole milk powder, cocoa butter, sunflower lecithin, natural vanilla), Organic Peanuts, Salt. Decorations: Cocoa Butter, Sugar, Full Milk Powder, Sunflower Lecithin (emulsifier). Titanium Dioxide, Rice Starch, FD&C Blue #1, Blue #2, Red #3, Red #40, Yellow #5.

Weight: 1.25 oz. (35.5 g.) / 2.5 oz. (71 g.) in total bar
Calories: 350 calories in 1 bar
Cost: Pricing not available for a single bar; (I paid $56.00 for 1 of a box of 8 bars)
Purchased from: Nutsola, online order

Welcome to Day #9 of Chocolate & Peanut Theme Week.

Today's Dat Chocolate Organic Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Filled Dark Chocolate (bar) was from Nutsola LLC (Livingston, NJ).

Aroma notes included: bold (slightly bitter, but balanced) dark chocolate and faint nut.

Texture: relatively smooth dark chocolate and a filling of ground peanuts (peanut butter)

Flavor notes included: bold but balanced dark chocolate with faint umami/savory peanut. Because of the lack of added sugar (dates were used to lightly sweeten this chocolate), this bar tasted like a higher percentage (80%) dark chocolate.

I liked 1.) the short list of quality (Organic and gluten-free) ingredients, 2.) how the peanut butter balanced and mellowed the dark chocolate); and 3) the hearty chocolate flavor that wasn't too sweet (thank you!).

Sugar can be valuable to balance bitterness in some chocolates; but I can do without a sugar buzz. (I also enjoy balanced bitter and umami flavors.) Nutsola co-founders, Adam and Michael, created this date-sweetened chocolate with "clean ingredients" and with more fiber "to slow down sugar absorption." The company produces a variety of "no added sugar" bars.

Ingredients: "Organic Cacao, Organic Date, Organic Peanut Butter, Organic Cocoa Butter, Sea Salt"

Allergen-related information: "Contains Peanuts. May contain occasional pits. Shares Equipment with Products Containing Soy, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Milk, Egg and Wheat."

Weight: 1.6 oz. (45 g.) / 3.2 oz. (90 g.) in total bar
Calories: 240 calories in 1/2 bar
Cost: $5.29 for 1 bar
Purchased from: The Market at Edgewood, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #8 of Chocolate and Peanut Theme Week.

Today's Salted Peanut Butter in Milk Chocolate (filled bar) was from Chocolove ("Made in Boulder, CO with Belgian Chocolate").

Aroma notes included: rich milk chocolate, faint nut (peanut butter) and warm vanilla.

The thick creamy milk chocolate bar contained a creamy peanut butter filling--making for a hearty, substantial bar.

A generous helping of sweetness and a little salt helped tipped this bar into the addictive snack zone; but when it comes to peanut butter chocolate confections I may eat more due to the tie to childhood chocolate candy memories. That happened today.

Ingredients: Milk Chocolate (Sugar, Cocoa Butter**, Milk, Cocoa Liquor**, Soy Lecithin and/or Sunflower Lecithin, Vanilla), Peanut Butter (Dry Roasted Blanched Peanuts), Organic Palm Fruit Oil, Organic Butter Oil, Sea Salt, Sunflower Lecithin.
** Rainforest Alliance Certified

Allergen-related information: Contains: Peanuts, Milk, Soy. Made in a facility that also processes eggs and tree nuts.

Aroma notes included: chocolate brownie cookie.

Texture: light and compact fudge brownie (softer) cookie chew with tiny (cacao nib and peanut?) bits.

Flavor notes included: light fudge brownie with very subtle date and peanut butter notes.

I liked the: 1.) emphasis on authentic chocolate flavor (cacao nibs and cocoa); 2.) relatively lightness of the other flavor elements--including the light but complex sweetness (it wasn't too sweet or date-y); 3.) overall chocolate brownie flavor and texture; and 4.) relatively short list of quality, authentic/organic ingredients.

Welcome to Day #6 of Chocolate and Peanut Theme Week.

Today's Raw* Rev Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt (bar) was manufactured for Raw Indulgence Ltd. (Elmsford, New York).

Aroma and flavor notes for this gluten free, plant-based protein bar included: peanut butter, peanut cookie, and chocolate. Light touches of salt, fat (coconut oil) and vanilla rounded out the flavor. I liked that it wasn't overly sweet (thank you!).

The substantial, chewy texture and high protein blend made it hearty and satisfying. (This bar contained 12 grams of protein.) The chew was not too soft, not too hard -- just right for a protein bar.

Ingredients: Peanuts, Isomalto-Ougosaccarides (Prebiotic from Tapioca), Protein Blend (Pea Protein Isolate, Brown Rice Protein, Organic Hemp Protein, Flax Protein), Organic Dark Chocolate Chips (Cane Sugar, Chocolate Liquor, Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin, Vanilla Extract), Organic Chia Seeds, Sunflower Lecithin, Organic Unrefined Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Roasted Peanut Extract, Sea Salt.

Welcome to Day #5 of Chocolate and Peanut Theme Week.

Today's Peanut Butter (bar) was from Chocolate Spiel (Edmonds/Seattle, WA).

Aroma notes included: subtle milk chocolate and nut (peanut). (Note: there were no milk ingredients listed.)

Texture: creamy, uniform melt and mouthfeel with soft nuttiness from peanut halves.

Flavor notes included: smooth, creamy dark chocolate with smooth creamy peanut butter and softly crunchy peanuts. The flavors in this bar were closest to peanut butter cup flavors so far this week -- without the extra sugar, salt or emulsifiers.

I liked the near perfect, classic blend of peanuts and smooth dark chocolate in this bar. Not ultra sweet (thank you). It was just right for me (a dark chocolate lover).

The painted (colored cocoa butter) dotted patterns on this bar created a festive, upbeat visual appearance.

Ingredients: "cocoa, peanuts, sugar, cocoa butter, colored cocoa butter (yellow 5)."

Allergen-related information: Contains Peanuts. "May contain traces of peanuts, tree nuts and gluten."

Welcome to Day #4 of Chocolate and Peanut Theme Week.

Today's Peanut Buddy Crisp milk chocolate truffle bar was from Seattle Chocolate Company (Seattle, WA).

Aroma notes included: smooth, rich milk chocolate, faint peanut butter, and very faint vanilla.

Texture: smooth, creamy and hearty milk chocolate base. Muted crisped rice bits added textural interest.

This was a rich and filling milk chocolate truffle bar. It provided great fuel for a winter weather walk.

Cost: $15.00 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Bar & Cocoa, online order

Welcome to Day #3 of Chocolate and Peanut Theme Week.

Today's 65% Dark Spicy Mala (bar) was from Fossa Chocolate (Singapore).

Aroma notes included: chocolate, green peppercorn, warm/upbeat spices, and very faint chili/heat.

This bar broke with a well-tempered snap, and had a relatively smooth texture with a smattering of light crunchy bits (sesame seeds).

Flavor notes included: smooth dark chocolate, fragrant green peppercorn, and light, warm spices (light cardamom, cinnamon).

This was a wonderful stewpot of well-balanced flavors. I really liked the aromatic top notes of the peppercorn, cardamom and cinnamon and very light umami elements (sesame, soy).

Maker's description: "An incredibly aromatic, spicy and numbing, yet addictive chocolate, inspired by the popular spicy mala stir fry pot dish..."

Ingredients: "Cacao, cane sugar, cocoa butter, peanut, sesame, soy sauce, dried chilli (sic), Sichuan peppercorn, cardamom, Bay leaves, cinnamon, star anise, fennel seeds"

Purchased from: Bar & Cocoa, online order

Welcome to Day #2 of Chocolate and Peanut Theme Week.

Today's 48% Milk Satay Sauce (bar) was from Fossa Chocolate Pte Ltd (Singapore).

Aroma and flavor notes included: authentic chili powder, dark milk chocolate, faint nuts, and spices.

I enjoyed trying this bar, even if the flavors were different than what I was expecting. Where I live in the U.S., satay sauce (a peanut sauce served over meat skewers) has more sweet peanut butter flavor and less chili powder flavor, so that's what I was expecting initially.

The added milk helped harmonize the spices and made the chocolate closer to the texture of a smooth savory sauce.

I appreciated the short list of quality/authentic ingredients in this chocolate. And I look forward to trying the more spice-forward versions of this sauce when I visit Singapore in the next year or two.

Ingredients: Cacao, cane sugar, cocoa butter, peanut, milk powder, cumin, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, anise, fennel seeds, peppercorn, sea salt

Allergen-related information: Contains: Peanuts, Milk. Produced in a facility that processes nuts & dairy.

Welcome to Day #7 of Chocolate and Lime Week and Day #1 of Chocolate and Peanut Week.

Today's Snak Club - Tajin Chili & Lime - Peanut & Corn Clusters in a chocolate-y coating were from Century Snacks, LLC (Commerce, CA).

Aroma and flavor notes included: mild chili powder mix, corn chip and chocolate.

Texture: snack-like blend of crunchy (toasted corn and dry roasted peanuts) and creamy (chocolate-y coating) texture.

I liked the fact the subtle (Tajin) chili and lime flavors and that these clusters were sweet and salty -- but not overly so in either direction.

While I wasn't as fond of the long list of ingredients, and would have loved a little more dark or dark milk chocolate in this snack, it was fun to try.

Description: "Dry roasted peanuts and toasted corn in chocolatey coating and sprinkled with Tajin chili lime seasoning."

Ingredients: Milk Confectionary (Sugar, Vegetable Oil [Palm Kernel Oil, Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil], Cocoa Powder, Nonfat Dry Milk, Whole Milk Powder, Whey Powder, Soy Lecithin [an emulsifier], Salt, Artificial Flavor), Salt, Artificial Flavor), Peanuts, Corn (Corn, Canola Oil, Sea Salt), Tajin (R) Clasico Seasoning (Chili Peppers, Sea Salt, Citric Acid, Contains 0.5% or Less of Dehydrated Lime Juice, Silicon Dioxide [To Prevent Caking]), Canola Oil.

Aloha and welcome to Day #6 of Chocolate and Lime Theme Week.

Today's Dark Chocolate Maui Calamansi Lime 65% Cacao (bar) was from Maui Ku'ia Estate Chocolate (Lahaina, Maui, HI).

The maker(s) used cacao from Costa Esmeraldas Ecuador. (I associate this growing locale with subtly complex fruit notes.)

Aroma notes included: dark chocolate, subtle and complex fruit; and very faint, fleeting spice (floral pepper).

The texture was creamy smooth; with a whipped cream-like melt and mouthfeel. (There was no dairy in this bar.)

Flavor notes included: dark chocolate; delicate, fruit-floral citrus (lemon-lime).

Calamansi limes are known for their relatively tart citrus flavor. But, I found the flavor in this chocolate to be quite mild and pleasing. The Maui-grown limes that were used were from the CEO's home orchard in Kapalua.*

I really enjoyed the subtle fruit-floral complex flavors and the lovely creamy texture. The choice to pair the Ecuador cacao with the Maui calamansi lime in this well-executed chocolate worked well. Normally when I see "natural flavors" in an ingredients list, I brace myself for synthetic, overly strong, or unpleasant flavors; but not this time.

Ingredients: Cacao Beans, Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Natural Flavors

Allergen-related information: (No information listed on chocolate packaging)

*"...He hand-picks the fruit at full ripeness, vacuum-seals it whole, and freezes it for later processing. Thawed fruit is crushed to extract the juice and bruise the skin to release essential oil. The flavor essence of the juice is infused to complement our 65% dark chocolate."

Welcome to Day #5 of Chocolate and Lime Theme Week.

Today's Coconut Lime 73% Cacao Chocolate Bar was from The Chocolate Conspiracy (Salt Lake City, UT).

Aroma notes for this lime oil-infused bar included: smooth dark chocolate and lime shortbread cookie.

Texture: smooth chocolate with a creamy (honey) melt occasionally punctuated with gentle, tiny shreds of coconut.

Flavor notes included: relatively smooth dark chocolate, gently sweetened with honey, and a somewhat surprising bitterness that I attributed to the lime oil.

I like botanically bitter flavors (e.g. hops, 100% cacao), as long as they are balanced--often with salt/sugar. (Maybe more salt would have balanced the bitter? Not sure.)

The maker's additions of honey, coconut and salt would have been exactly what I would have included to balance this bitter flavor, and these counter elements almost worked. I'm looking forward to trying other flavors from this maker, to see what their chocolate tastes like with other flavor blends.

Ingredients: "Raw Organic Cacao Beans, Raw Unfiltered Honey, Raw Organic Cacao Butter, Lime Oil, Organic Coconut Shreds, Smoked Coconut Lime Sea Salt."

Allergen-related information: "Manufactured in a facility that also processes peanuts, almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans, coconut, and pistachios." "Gluten Free, Soy Free, Dairy Free"

Welcome to Day #4 of Chocolate and Lime Theme Week.

Today's Strawberry Lime Salt (bar) was from Chocolate Spiel (Edmonds, WA).

Aroma notes included: lime chocolate shortbread cookie strawberry filling, limeade, and very faint spice (fleeting licorice).

Texture: creamy, uniform melt and mouthfeel.

Flavor notes included: smooth, creamy dark chocolate with fruit (red berry, strawberry) and subtle citrus (subtle, tart-sweet lime), and a satisfying, dash of salt.

I like the balanced complexity, the sweetness level (not too much, but enough to bring joy)--and the salt.

The painted (colored white chocolate) patterns on this bar created a festive, upbeat visual appearance.

Ingredients: "cocoa, sugar, cocoa butter, strawberry, chipotle lime salt from Aroma Spice Co., lime, colored cocoa butter."

Welcome to Day #3 of Chocolate and Lime Theme Week, and Happy Valentines Day to all who celebrate this day which is about warm hearts and passion.

What better way to celebrate than today's spicy Chili + Lime + Salt 60% Cacao (bar) from Intrigue Chocolate Co. (Seattle, WA).

Made with cacao from Uganda (Region: Rwenzururu - Semuliki Forest) Type: Mostly Trinitario and Amelonado Year: 2024), this bar was flavored with cayenne chili, lime juice, and sea salt.

Aroma notes included: smooth but rich dark chocolate, fruit (fig cookie), and faint savory spice (chili) and citrus (lime).

Texture: smooth with a very creamy melt and mouthfeel.

Flavor notes included: sweet, rich, dark chocolate; fruit (lime and diffuse red fruit (red apple, fig, imaginary mango); and--last, but not least--chili with a spicy kick (more in some bites than others). The chili heat kicked in about 2/3 way through and the sizzle lingered into the finish.

Maker's notes: "This flavor was inspired by those amazing fruit vendors around the world (eg Mexico and Thailand) who sprinkle fresh cut slices with an irresistible mixture of sour, spicy, salty goodness."

Ingredients: Roasted cacao nibs, raw cane sugar, cocoa butter, cayenne chilis, dehydrated lime juice, sea salt.

Welcome to Day #2 of Chocolate and Lime Theme Week.

Today's Lime and Passion Fruit Dark Chocolate 70% filled sweet potato, passion fruit, polenta-lime ganache (bar) was made in Austria and distributed by Zotter Chocolates US LLC (Fort Myers, FL).

Aroma notes for this Peruvian-inspired bar included: a sweet, tropical confection/dessert with tart lime and fruit, and subtle dark chocolate.

Texture for this "hand-scooped" (filled) bar was smooth with a few very tiny lime-flavored shreds in the filling, surrounded by a velvety, thin layer of dark chocolate.

Flavor notes included: a very sweet, smooth blend of tart fruits (citrus (limeade, lemon), passion fruit), and a cast of other well blended and complementary flavors--all covered with a thin coating of slightly earthy, silken dark chocolate.

I could almost taste the polenta in the filling; however, the sweet potato was not detectable. (Sweet potato worked/works surprisingly well with/in chocolate items, as a stealth flavor and/or smooth texture enhancer.)

While this sweet cocktail (it did contain a bit of brandy) of a bar was a bit too sweet (for me), I appreciated the lively lime and fruit tartness, balanced a bit by the dark chocolate; the complex blend of Peruvian inspired flavors; and the sheer inventiveness of the makers at Zotter. (They've produced a staggering array of flavors over the years, and have done so using organic and fairtrade ingredients when/where possible.)

Read the ingredients (below) to appreciate what goes into a bar like this.

Ingredients: Cane Sugar+*, Cocoa Butter+*, Cocoa Mass+*, Glucose Syrup+, Verjuice+ - Juice of Green Grapes, Sweet Potatoes+, Dried Passion Fruits+, Lemon Juice+, Milk, Dry Whole Milk, Dry Skim Milk, Dry Skim Milk Yoghurt, Polenta+, Cane Sugar Brandy+, Lime Concentrate+, Caramelized Milk Powder (Dry Skim Milk, Sugar), Butter (Cream), Almonds+, Passion Fruit Concentrate+, Dry Sweet Whey, Lemon Juice Concentrate+, Dark Brown Cane Sugar+*, Lecithin (Soy)+, Salt, Vanilla Bean Powder+*, Cinnamon+*, Lemon Oil+, Chili ("Bird's Eye")+, Rose Petals+, Lemon Powder+ (Lemon Juice Concentrate+, Corn Starch+, Sugar+).  + = Organic (89% Organic); * = Fair Traded, Fair Trade Content in Total: 67%

Purchased from: Chocolate Covered, San Francisco, CA

Welcome to Day #1 of Chocolate and Lime Week, including different varieties and components of limes blended with chocolate.

Today's Brown Sugar & Lime 60% dark chocolate (bar) was from Mission Chocolate (Sao Paolo, Brazil).

Aroma notes included: "warm", faintly fruity dark chocolate; light, almost floral citrus (lime blossom + lime juice); faint brown sugar; and (almost undetectable) refreshing, clean mineral water.

Texture: This thin bar (thank you) broke with a well-tempered snap and the texture was relatively smooth, with a tiny bit of fruit/citrus astringency.

The cacao, lime and brown sugar flavors were well-executed and balanced. It was sweet, but not overly so (thank you).

There was a very pleasant lilting quality when the flavors unfolded, then undulated a little over the course of tasting this chocolate; and the finish was long and subtle.

This gently animated complexity (chocolate magic) was elicited from a short list of four, high-quality ingredients.

Ingredients: "cacao, organic dark brown sugar, cocoa butter, lime."

Allergen-related information: "May Contain Traces of Peanut, Coconut, Tree Nuts, And Oats Due to Shared Equipment. Does not contain lactose, gluten or soy."

Welcome to the last day (Day #14) of Unique Chocolate Theme Week. And today features two special and unique chocolate bars.

Today's Indigo (38% white) and 73% Dark Sake Kasu bars were created by Fossa Chocolate (Singapore). The company offers thoughtfully crafted, well-executed bars, many with special teas and Asian flavor inclusions.

Indigo* (bar)

Aroma and flavor notes included: white chocolate; slightly sweet floral; milky citrus (orange blossom + lemon ice cream); and hard to pin down botanical (sweet, woodsy, tea) notes. These relatively delicate, sweetly complex and creamy notes lingered into the finish.

This truly unique ivory-colored 38% white chocolate--part of Fossa's Tokushima Collection**--was a muted darker green-teal color and had a well-executed, creamy texture with a very slightly textured mouthfeel (from the dried indigo).

I enjoyed the nuances of flavor in this sweet 38% white milk chocolate, and the opportunity to experience my first taste the unique plant behind the beautiful blue indigo color.

Maker's description: "Dried and made into a powder to be blended with 38% white chocolate, the flavor is soft and delicate, reminding us of woods and florals."

Ingredients: Cocoa butter, milk powder, cane sugar, dried indigo

Allergen-related information: Contains dairy. Produced in a facility that processes nuts.

*There are different species of plants known as "indigo"--a member of the legume/pea family--with most associated with Africa, India, South China and Japan. (Indigenous people in the Americas also used similar plants for dyeing materials.) It's also used as a medicinal plant in some cultures.

Note: I would advise researching the plant/indigo source first, before eating it, particularly if you think you've found it growing in the wild.)

**Tokushima Prefecture is on Shikoku Island, Japan.

73% Dark Sake Kasu (bar)

Aroma notes included an aromatic orchestra of scents: chocolate, lightly sour fruit(s) candy, very slightly bitter, fermented spirits, and umami.

This was a blend of tasty dark chocolate + slightly umami and fermented sake kasu "candy" squares. The layered, slightly sweet, sour, bitter and fermented (sake) flavors (from two types of kasu*) extended into a long, slightly fermented sweet finish.

Texture: smooth, creamy dark chocolate interspersed with small, thin, firmly chewy squares of flavored candy.

I like umami flavors with chocolate; and this sake 73% dark bar was authentic and delightful to try.

This Sake Kasu bar reminded me a little bit of a naturally sweeter (less hoppy) version of chocolates made with beer, malt and hops. It had the richness and depth of flavor(s) found in other bars with fermented spirits.

*Maker's notes: The white kasu comes from Akishika Shozu, a "kiian-zukuri" or "seedling to sake" brewery that makes sake using organic rice grown in-house...And the red kasu comes from the brewing of Inemankai - a one-of-a-kind sake by Mukai Shuo using a strain of red rice that grows in the master brewer's hometown of Ine in rural Kyoto.

Ingredients: Cacao, cane sugar, sake Kasu (rice, koji), dextrose

Allergen-related information: Produced in a facility that processes nuts & dairy.

Today's Zotter Hemp Bonbon Dark Chocolate 70% filled with hemp cream (bar) was made in Austria and distributed by Zotter Chocolates US LLC (Fort Myers, FL).

Aroma notes included: dark chocolate, botanical (malt, oatstraw, sunflower seed) and vanilla wafer.

Texture: creamy, almost silken dark chocolate coating, with a creamy, layered filling, the thickest layer being slightly green in color (that contained hemp seeds).

Flavor notes included: smooth dark chocolate, sweet layered filling with caramelized, very finely ground hemp seeds, praline, and vanilla.

I enjoyed the way that hemp seeds were skillfully used to make this chocolate. The bar may appeal to those who like dark chocolate, to those who favor confections, to those who enjoy novelty chocolates, and even to those who might be curious about hemp -- but don't want any THC. No small feat to satisfy all of these groups.

Welcome to Day #12 of Unique Chocolates Week, featuring chocolates with unique origins, stories and unique or holiday-related flavor inclusions and stories.

Hu Kitchen was started by two siblings in New York--and has grown into Hu Products, LLC (Austin, TX), with chocolate bars being made in Italy as they've grown. The company's tagline urges us to enjoy foods made with simple ingredients that taste good, and to: "Get Back to Human."

Today's two Limited Edition Hu bars evoked two red-hued, winter holidays (Valentines Day and Christmas). I saved them from falling out of season by eating them. It was the least I could do.

Peppermint Mocha + Almond Butter Dark Chocolate

As promised, this was a hearty blend of smooth dark chocolate, almond butter and peppermint. I appreciated these well-balanced, authentic flavors--that weren't too strong or overly sweet. The peppermint level was just right. (No big candy cane or high-wattage toothpaste level mint. Thank you!)

There was also a slight crunchiness (ground coffee bits) that added a bit of textural interest, without being too gritty or intrusive.

Ingredients: "organic cacao*, organic unrefined coconut sugar*, organic almond butter, organic cocoa butter*, organic coffee*, organic peppermint oil." (* = Certified Fairtrade ingredients)

Allergen-related information: "Contains almond & coconut. May contain cashew, hazelnut, pistachio, & milk. Allergen cleans made prior to production, but beware that product is produced using equipment that also processes tree nuts, soy, milk, & wheat."

Very Merry Raspberry + Hazelnut Butter Dark Chocolate

I enjoyed the authentic, refreshing red raspberry, almond butter and smooth dark chocolate flavors--that were balanced well with each other.

I continue to appreciate Hu's use of a relatively short list of organic, high-quality ingredients that are not overly processed (e.g., Organic, fairtrade 70% cacao, no emulsifiers, soy or gluten, no refined sugar) in their chocolate bars.

Ingredients: "organic cacao*, organic unrefined coconut sugar*, organic hazelnut butter, organic cocoa butter*, organic raspberry" (* = Certified Fairtrade ingredients)

Allergen-related information: "Contains coconut (sugar) & hazelnut. May contain almonds, cashew, pistachio, & milk. Allergen cleans made prior to production, but beware that product is produced using equipment that also processes tree nuts, soy, milk, & wheat."

Rozsavolgyi Csokolade - Beer vs. Cocoa Malt & Hops in Dark Chocolate (bar) - Feb. 8, 2025

Chocolate of the Day

Rozsavolgyi Csokolade
Beer vs. Cocoa Malt & Hops in Dark Chocolate (bar)
Good + - Good ++
Weight: 1.23 oz. (35 g.) / 2.47 oz. (70 g.) in total bar
Calories: 212 calories in approximately 1/2 bar
Cost: $16.99 for 1 bar
Purchased from: DeLaurenti, online order

Welcome to Day #11 of Unique Chocolates Week, including this high-end, novelty specialty chocolate made with beer candy, malt and hops.

Today's Beer vs. Cocoa Malt & Hops in Dark Chocolate (bar) was from Rozsavolgyi Csokolade Kft (Budapest, Hungary).

Aroma notes included: unsweetened, very slightly bitter, malty chocolate biscuit (cookie)

This bar had a fun, crunchy + creamy texture. The chocolate had a crunchy element (from tiny pieces of malty beer candy I'm assuming); but it quickly resolved into smooth, creamy dark chocolate.

Flavor notes for this creative flavor collaboration included relatively rich/bold dark chocolate with a slight bitterness (likely due to the hops); and one or two bites had some bitter and earthiness.

The individual cacao and beer elements were artfully blended. No small feat, given the flavor forces at work here were tugging playfully at each other. Ultimately, the combination worked; and no one flavor dominated the other too much.

Disclosure: I enjoy slightly bitter flavors, especially when they're well-balanced with just a pinch of sugar and/or salt. That includes some bitter cacao and nibs, but also flavor inclusions like hops or some citrus fruits/rinds in blends.

Maker's description: "Who will win the fight? The hops add all their bitterness and frantic aromas, the malt its caramel flavor. But will this be enough for the beer to win? Who knows? We made candy from the beer, which made the hops-flavored, fruity-fermented dark chocolate even more exciting."

Ingredients: dark chocolate (Cocoa beans, organic cane sugar, organic cocoa butter, cocoa cont. min. 73%), beer candy (beer, organic cane sugar, chestnut honey, organic cocoa butter, malt), hops

Allergen-related information: "Produced in a factory that also handles nuts, sesame seed and milk powder."

Welcome to Day #10 of Unique Chocolates Week, including chocolates with unique flavor inclusions...like the sweet potato in today's bar.

Today's "French Toast" 58% dark chocolate with sugar crystals and cinnamon (bar) was from Mission Chocolate (Sao Paolo, Brazil).

Aroma notes included: subtle, smooth dark chocolate, and very faint warm spice.

Texture: wonderfully thin bar that broke with a quiet snap. Tiny, crunchy sugar crystals shone brightly on one side. The chocolate was smooth, and relatively creamy. The sweet potato was totally incorporated and, judging from the mouthfeel, contributed to the sense of almost milk-like smoothness.

Flavor notes included: dark milk chocolate (there was no milk) with tiny sweet bursts of sugar, and almost undetectable traces of warm spice (cinnamon).

I liked the thinness of this bar, the well-executed sugar crystals, and the skillfully incorporated sweet potato (powder). It was very tasty. I would definitely try more sweet potato chocolate from this maker.

Ingredients: Cacao mass, organic sugar, sweet potato powder, cocoa powder, cinnamon.

Allergen-related information: "May contain traces of lactose, peanut, coconut, tree nuts due to shared equipment."

Purchased from: Seahorse Chocolate, online order

Welcome to Day #9 of Unique Chocolates Theme Week. Part of what made yesterday's and today's Seahorse Chocolate bars unique was the opportunity to experience how tasty well-executed cacao blends can be. That, and the references to music.*

Today's "Left of The Dial" 78% dark chocolate (bar) was created by Seahorse Chocolate (Bend, OR). The bar was made with a blend of cocoa(s) "from The Caribbean and The Americas."

Aroma notes included: dark chocolate, fruit (citrus, banana bread). Flavor notes brought a deeper dive into rich, creamy dark chocolate with balanced, tart lemon and sour cherry fruit notes.

I enjoyed the rich dark chocolate and tart fruit flavors in this 78% dark offering. The skillfully executed cacao blend with naturally sweet fruit notes (and the organic sugar choice) yielded a hearty sophisticated, dark chocolate, with a vibrant tropical soul--and that tasted more like a 70% chocolate.

Maker's tasting notes: "Reminds Us of: "Tart Cherry, Lemon Zest, Searching The Bins For Records Steeped in Obscure Deliciousness"

Ingredients: "Cocoa Beans, Organic Sugar"

Allergen-related information: Vegan, Gluten Free

*Years ago I featured a Chocolate and Music Theme Week on this blog. Many chocolate makers have more than one creative talent, and several either play (or played) an instrument, are (or were) in a band, or are keen appreciators or music -- often as they make chocolate. Music can deepen one's appreciation for nuances and layers of what can please the palette as well as the soul.

Welcome to Day #8 of Unique Chocolates Theme Week, including chocolates with unique origins, flavor inclusions and themes.

Today's "A.M. Gold" 69% dark chocolate (bar) was created by Seahorse Chocolate (Bend, OR). The bar was made with a blend of cacaos "from The Americas and Pan Asia."

Aroma and flavor notes included: rich dark chocolate (drinking chocolate, balanced forest/earth and fruits (dates and berries, citrus)), subtle brown sugar, and faint toffee with nuts.

I liked the rich, natural sweetness (bright fruit notes) and complexity of flavors in this 69% cacao bar. Flavors were skillfully blended and realized using just two ingredients.

I also enjoyed the playful maker's notes (below) evoking a time, a place--and music.*

Maker's tasting notes: "Reminds us of: Macrame, Nougat, Listening to Smooth Hits While Riding in The Back Seat of A Minivan On Your Way Home From Practice"

Ingredients: "Cocoa Beans, Organic Sugar"

Allergen-related information: Vegan, Gluten Free

*Years ago I ran a Chocolate and Music Theme Week. And I was even cheeky enough to ask (already very busy) chocolate makers if they'd ever thought of pairing specific chocolates with songs--perhaps one(s) they'd written themselves.

Chocolate makers have strong creative and technical skills--perfect for making craft chocolate (or specialty/craft coffee, beer, wine, etc.) where multiple skills come into play. I'm grateful for this every time I'm able to enjoy the end products of such multi-talented folk.

Welcome to Day #7 of Unique Chocolates Theme Week.

Today's "Honey Bunny" Honey Almonds Milk Chocolate 38% (bar) from Lucifer Chocolate was made in Velenje, Slovenia--for me a unique company origin. I was able to taste this bar because my niece brought this back from her travels. (Thank you Monique!)

Aroma and flavor notes included: milk chocolate (rich, velvety cocoa), subtle caramel, hidden malt and toasted nut (almond), clean mineral and salt.

Texture: creamy milk chocolate and crunchy (almonds, honey crispies and salt crystals). I enjoyed the sweet-salty and nutty flavors and textures in this bar.

Seattle Chocolate - Neapolitan layered truffle bar - Feb. 3, 2025

Chocolate of the Day

Seattle Chocolate
Neapolitan (bar)
Good + - Good  ++
Weight: 2.5 oz. (70 g.) in total bar
Calories: 400 calories in 1 bar
Cost: $4.99 for 1 bar
Purchased from: FarmFresh, online order

Welcome to Day #6 of Unique Chocolates Week, including a few chocolates with a creative take on confectionery classics.

Today's Neapolitan white, pink and dark chocolate layered truffle bar was from Seattle Chocolate Company (Seattle, WA).

Aroma and flavor notes for this three-layer chocolate bar included: ice cream sundae: white chocolate (vanilla); white chocolate infused with sweet berry (red raspberry, strawberry); and smooth dark chocolate--a blend that reminded me of neapolitan ice creams* in the U.S. constructed with layers of vanilla, strawberry and chocolate and ice creams in one container.

This truffle parfait had a rich, creamy texture and melt, and it was very sweet...like ice cream -- or a smooth, sugary confection. Great for those with a sweet tooth.

This layered chocolate was also a reminder of the different types of "chocolate" being sold today: dark chocolate, dark milk chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate--and (more recently) "ruby" (pink) chocolate that has a red berry flavor.

Ingredients: white chocolate (cane sugar, cocoa butter*, milk, soy lecithin, natural vanilla), dark chocolate (cocoa mass, cane sugar, cocoa butter, organic soy lecithin, natural vanilla), coconut oil, raspberry powder, beet extract (color), natural flavor, sea salt.

Allergen-related information: Contains Milk, Soy, Coconut (Oil). "This product is manufactured in a plant that processes milk, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, and wheat products." "Kosher (Dairy), Gluten Free."

*Likely inspired by either Harlequin ice cream with strawberry, chocolate and vanilla flavors from Prussia....and/or by Spumoni ice cream with pistachio, cherry and chocolate flavors from Italy. Thus the reference to Neapolitan-style ice cream. (A Neapolitan is someone from Napoli, Italy.)

Welcome to Day #5 of Unique Chocolates Week.

Today's Chocolate Banana Split; Bean Origin: Ecuador, 59% Cacao (bar) was from Goodnow Farms Chocolate (Sudbury, MA).

I loved that the makers took advantage of a cacao with slightly fruity (red fruit/berry) notes and leveraged that in creating today's banana split (ice cream sundae-inspired) chocolate. The vanilla and banana flavors (added to the cacao and berry notes) were subtle; and the final blend was creamy and delicious.

Warning: addictive, especially if you're hungry.

Thank you to the makers at Goodnow Farms for their thoughtful process and creations, short list of quality ingredients, and for using organic ingredients.

Welcome to Day #4 of Unique Chocolates Week.

Today's Hot Salted Sriracha Chocolate - 70% Dark Chocolate (bar) was owned and distributed by Emerald City Foods (Seattle, WA).

Aroma and flavor notes for this sriracha and sea salt bar included dark chocolate (deep cocoa), faint umami, salt, and subtle spicy heat; vanilla; and very faint, balanced sauce-y vinegar/sriracha sauce.

The bar broke with a well-tempered snap, and the texture was smooth and relatively creamy.

Surprisingly, these flavors harmonized fairly well together. (Although I usually prefer darker chocolates, I I enjoyed the 55% cacao version of this bar (from the same company, tasted a few months ago) a little better than today's 70% version. (The sriracha and salt was easier to taste in the 55% version.) But, I enjoyed tasting both.

Ingredients: Dark Chocolate (Cocoa Liquor, Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin, Vanilla Extract), Himalayan Sea Salt, Sriracha Seasoning: Maltrin, Sugar, Salt, Garlic, Tocopherols, Paprika Oil (for color), Sriracha Powder (Sriracha Sauce, Sodium Alginate, Carrageenan, Cellulose Gum, Silicon Dioxide, Sunflower Lecithin), Capsicum Oleoresin, Yeast Extract, Vinegar, Citric Acid"

Allergen-related information: "Contains Soy, Sulfites...This product is manufactured at a plant that processes milk, soy, tree nuts and peanuts."

Welcome to Day #3 of Unique Chocolates Theme Week.

Today's Limited Edition - No Sugar Milk 60% Dark Milk (bar) was from Sirene Chocolate (Victoria, B.C., Canada).

Why was this bar unique? It contained no added sugar, and yet it was (to my taste) sweet. It was a great opportunity to taste how sweet a dark milk chocolate can be--without added sugar(s). Surprisingly, this was only the third bar I've tried in 18 years like this.

I enjoyed the creamy texture, milk chocolate mouthfeel and melt, the authentic sweetness supplied by the milk and the very slight bitterness toward the finish. The milk mellowed any bitterness (or absence of sugar).

The claims of "no sugar" or "sugar free" chocolates in the past meant artificial sweeteners or some other sweetener sleight of hand. However, today's two-ingredient bar, let us know that the milk (lactose) alone can do the job. I hope I'm able to try more chocolates like this in the future.

Ingredients: "cacao beans, whole milk powder"

Allergen-related information: Contains Milk. "Made In A Nut Free Facility, Soy Free, Gluten Free"
