Today's Honey Mama's Peanut Butter Cup Cocoa Truffle Bar was from Nectar Foods, Inc. (Portland, OR). The company produces a line of Cocoa Truffle Bars, all sweetened using honey, rather than refined sugar.

Aroma notes for these refrigerated truffle bars included: chocolate nut butter and honey cookie; peanuts.

This hearty soft chewy, fudge-y bar was a cross between a rich, soft chocolate cookie and a chocolate bar. It had smooth cocoa, peanut, and faint soft, sweet (pleasing) green floral (honey, vanilla), and very faint coconut notes.

I liked the natural honey flavor, and that the overall sweetness level wasn't too high (thank you!).

Welcome to Day #6 of Chocolate and Peanut Theme Week--featuring a variety of different high-end chocolates, confections and a few protein/snack bars.

Today's Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups from Ragged Coast Chocolates (Westbrook, ME) garnered a 2023 Good Food Awards win in the Confections category.

Aroma notes included: dark chocolate, faint nuts, and very faint aromatic (jasmine) rice.

Texture: very smooth dark chocolate with silken peanut butter center(s).

Layered flavor notes for these cups included: smooth dark chocolate; the aforementioned, silky, peanut butter center; and light sparkles of (Maine) sea salt.

I loved that these peanut butter cups were not overly sweet (thank you!). I also appreciated the short list of ingredients, the layered flavors and the use of single origin dark chocolate. The levels of salt and sugar were both in the Goldilocks* zone for me.

*The Goldilocks zone is a reference to a European folk tale. In the U.S. version of this tale, a girl (named Goldilocks), breaks into a house belonging to three bears and she eventually finds items inside that are, for her, just right. (The first bowl of porridge left on the table was too hot, the second bowl was too cold; but the last one was just right. The same sequence of events were repeated with the chairs and the beds she found.) 

You might also hear a version of the Goldilocks zone reference from astronomers; e.g., that planet is too hot and that planet is too cold. But conditions on this planet may be just right to sustain life, water or other favorable conditions. (Earth is a great example of being in the zone, and why I've been able to write about a different chocolate every day for almost 18 years now.)

Today's Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups were from Exquisito Chocolates, LLC (Little Havana, Miami, FL). 

These filled peanut butter cup confections had a smooth, and relatively complex, dark chocolate-forward aroma and flavor, that blended well with the sweeter, slow-roasted peanut (smooth peanut butter) flavors in the filling.

Unlike many other chocolatiers, Exquisito does make bean-to-bar chocolate and offers some single origin bars. The cacao used for the outer (73% cacao) dark chocolate cup "shell" may have been made using Tumaco (Colombia) cacao (according to information, as of 4/14/22, on the Exquisito Chocolates website).

Maker's tasting notes: "A handcrafted version of the candy classic, but now made with real ingredients and sustainably sourced cacao. Picture if your favorite childhood treat went off and got its PhD."

Aroma notes for these peanut butter cups included: chocolate green, nut (peanut), and warm floral spice (vanilla).

Texture: Creamy, buttery milk chocolate with a smooth peanut butter filling. 

The milk chocolate cup/shell had a confection level sweetness, while the smooth, uniform peanut butter filling was not overly sweet--the opposite of a dark (less sweet) chocolate shell with a sugary peanut butter interior. The nutty, peanut butter core helped balance the sweeter chocolate exterior to create a tasty overall treat.

Today's Milk Chocolate Style Peanut Butter Cups were manufactured for Lily's Sweets LLC (Boulder, CO). The company offers a variety of stevia and erythritol sweetened chocolates.

These individually-wrapped peanut butter cups had an aroma with tart green-lemon herb (oxalis) and cocoa that evolved into cookie and vanilla notes.

The milk chocolate cup coating was creamy and smooth in texture.

Flavor traits included: faint roasted coffee, a very faint, slightly odd perfume-y sweetness, milk chocolate, graham cracker and nutty notes.

The sweetness level was satisfying and balanced, and did not taste artificial. The sweeteners used (erythritol and stevia) "felt" different than sugar, which may have been due to the lack of small sugar "buzz" one gets from most cane sugar-sweetened chocolates.

As with many sugar-free chocolates, I suggest eating a small quantity (single serving of two cups) first if you have digestive sensitivities. (These chocolates also contained chicory fiber.)

Welcome to Day #6 of Cold Chocolate Theme Week.

Today's "Perfect Snacks" Dark Chocolate Mint Refrigerated Peanut Butter Cups were from Perfect Bar LLC (San Diego, CA).

These cool, filled chocolates had a pleasing peppermint-infused chocolate aroma.

Smooth dark chocolate surrounded a thick, coarsely ground, authentic-tasting nutty center with myriad tiny peanut bits and other ingredients (see below). 

The refreshing dark chocolate mint flavor was made moreso because the cups were refrigerated. These cool chocolates were perfect for eating during a heat wave. (And we are having one this week; so cold chocolates have been extra enjoyable.)

The chocolate, mint and peanut flavors were nicely balanced, and harmonized well. These cups were not too sweet or salty, and that allowed for greater enjoyment of the underlying flavors (thank you).

The decision to incorporate 7 grams of protein (in 2 cups), primarily from peanuts, milk and rice protein--as well as the inclusion of various "superfood" powders and oils (from fruits, vegetables, seeds)--made these cups a substantial and satisfying (more filling) snack as well.

The oval-shaped Barnana bites had a smooth, chocolate peanut butter cup coating surrounding a banana and peanut flour core.* They had a roasted nut and caramelized banana aroma and flavor, a slightly chewy texture and balanced natural-tasting banana, peanut and chocolate flavors.

These grain-free bites were labeled as being "Upcycled." Barnana, a Certified B Corporation,** is helping to reduce food waste by using "imperfect", but still good, bananas grown on organic banana plantations, that might otherwise be discarded.

Today's layered peanut butter cups were from Gracie Jones Gluten Free Bake Shop (Palo Alto, CA). This Bake Shop is a little island of Gluten Free heaven, where customers don't have to point at every item and ask if it's gluten free or not. This bakery has a small, but impressive fresh supply of sweet baked goods—and savory items as well. (Banh Mi sandwiches on fresh baked bread. Thank you!)

These cups had authentic chocolate and peanut butter flavor, and a smooth, rich melt, with a very slight coconut oil flavor note and texture.

I paired these with a whole organic date. One small date is so full of natural concentrated fruit sweetness, it can stop a sweet craving in its tracks. That and two peanut butter cups.

True confession: I had a childhood love affair with chocolate peanut butter cups. And I still like them a lot. However, making my own became more appealing as I grew older, and as I started reading ingredient labels. Fortunately, there were others who felt the same way.

Today's Organic Mini Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups from Justin's (Boulder, CO) were a yummy, adult version of a childhood milk chocolate classic.

Each individually-wrapped little dark chocolate cup was filled with authentic tasting peanut butter; and the packaging and size made them a bit more shareable and transportable than their full-sized counterparts. (Justin's also makes full-sized dark and milk chocolate peanut butter cups—and full-sized almond butter and cashew butter cups as well.)

And, yes, there really is a "Justin" behind Justin's. Founder Justin Gold got his start by developing his own nut butters, and then started to sell these at the Boulder Farmers' Market. Nut butters led to nut butter cups...And the rest, as they say, is history. Justin's products can now be found far and wide in the U.S.

Welcome to the last day (Day #10) of Chocolate and the Wild West Theme Week, and Day #3 of Chocolate and Peanuts Theme Week.

Today's entry includes two chocolate items with peanuts, recently purchased in Rapid City, South Dakota—a part of the country known for its wide open spaces, the Badlands, Black Hills, towns like Deadwood, and in some cases ranches with cowboys who aren't just all hat and no cattle.

Peanut Butter Cups. H.B. Reese is credited with inventing this confection in 1928. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (The Hershey Company) are a prominent feature of the American (and global) candy landscape. What's not to like? A dark chocolate peanut butter cup bar? Sign me up.

Today's Peanut Butter Cup bar was made for Hammond's Candies (Denver, CO), a company that has been in the sweets business since the 1920s. The dark chocolate bar contained a soft peanut butter filling. I would have liked the dark chocolate to have been a little richer and darker, but it was a good rendition of a classic pairing.

Cabela's - Half Dipped Squares
Today's Half-Dipped Squares were made for Cabela's—an outdoor sportsman's paradise of a retail location. Beneath Cabela's vaulted ceilings lie stuffed game and hunting, fishing and camping equipment galore. A reflection of the wild west in its present day form.

These small squares were made of a sweet, peanut crunch brittle and were coated with chocolate on one side.

They were also very similar to an Uncle Buck's peanut squares item found a few years ago in a Bass Pro store (a Cabela's competitor). It's worth noting, the two large outdoor stores have recently agreed to merge; so one of these lines may eventually also be merged with the other.

It's fair to say that Reese's is a brand name that looms large when it comes to peanut butter and chocolate in the U.S. 

Over the years, The Hershey Company (Hershey, PA) has developed seasonal and other variations on their classic Reese's peanut butter cup, such as today's Flavor of Georgia Honey Roasted Peanut Butter Cups.

Earlier this year the company began offering a "Flavors of America" collection, with versions of traditional candy bars, e.g. the (Texas) BBQ PayDay bar, (California) Strawberry KitKat bar and today's Georgia-themed Honey Roasted Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, that were designed to capture experiences that one might have had with summer foods in six U.S. states.

These milk chocolate peanut butter cups tasted like classic Reese's peanut butter cups, although perhaps a smidge sweeter.* They had the same addictive, peanut butter filling, and smooth, almost silky milk chocolate coating— the stuff of childhood memories.

*Sadly, the ingredients list included lactose, sugar, dextrose and natural flavors, but no real honey.

Welcome to Day #2 of Trick or Treat Week. On this day before Halloween (and pre-Day of the Dead weekend), what better way to celebrate than a skull-shaped chocolate peanut butter cup. A "Smooth and Crunchy Skull" no less.

Wait, what is that apparition coming out of the candy mist? As it materialized, this spooky Butterfinger Halloween skull from Nestle seemed to say: "Arrgh. Dead men tell no tales." (Well, they don't after you bite off their jaws.) And, how kind this grinning skull was to let me feast on its chocolate bones and peanut butter and crunchy, peanut toffee brains.

The list of ingredients for this skull was long and included some items I'd rather not be haunted by (lactose, palm oil, hydrogenated oils, etc.). However, what a treat to see that Nestle has done away with artificial flavors and colors, and used natural colorings (paprika and annatto).

In February 2015, the company pledged to take this step with some popular candy offerings—including Butterfinger, Crunch and Baby Ruth bars—by the end of 2015.

*The Butterfinger candy bar was developed by the Curtis Candy Company in Chicago in the 1920s, and was eventually sold (in 1990) to Nestle.

There have been trail mixes galore this walnut-themed chocolate week, including this "365 Everyday Value" branded duo from Whole Foods Market (based in Austin, TX).

The "Strider's Snack Trail Mix" was a blend of raisins, unroasted and unsalted almonds, cashews, hazelnuts and, you guessed it...walnuts. Together they were great.
