Today's Dark Chocolate Protein Shake was distributed by Only What You Need, Inc. (Fairfield, New Jersey). 

This single serving beverage contained a generous helping of plant protein (20 grams of protein per single serving/container.

Aroma notes included: cocoa, chocolate milk, and hard to identify sweet-savory (nut and green vegetable) notes.

Texture: smooth beverage, with a very slightly thickened texture (with a barely there creamy/silky, gel-like mouthfeel). All the ingredients were well incorporated; there was no trace of any protein "grit."

Flavor notes included: cocoa, chocolate milk; faint vanilla and caramel; and very faint (barely detectable) vegetable (green pea, greens), with a slight lingering sweetness.

The sweetness level felt right. (This protein shake drink was sweet right into the finish, but not overly so.) Monk fruit extract helped create sweetness (and minimize any bitterness).

Today's Califia Farms Cold Brew Coffee with Almondmilk Mocha (beverage) was distributed by Califia Farms, LLC (Bakersfield, CA).

Aroma notes included: chocolate milk and faint mocha.

The texture for this dairy-free, almondmilk-based, chilled coffee beverage was very smooth and similar to low-fat dairy-milk.

The (Rainforest Alliance certified) cold brew coffee and chocolate (alkalized cocoa powder) flavors were relatively mild and pleasant. (There were also very faint nut and vanilla-like notes.)

The caffeine level (less than 50 mg in this bottle) and sweetness levels (Total carbs.: 17 g., including 2 g. fiber) were relatively low as well, making this a relatively relaxing, pick-me-up. It was a smooth, cold beverage enjoyed on a warm afternoon that still let me sleep later in the evening.

Welcome to Day #11 of Chocolate and Coffee Theme Week.

Today's Stumptown Cold Brew Coffee with Oatmilk Chocolate was manufactured for Stumptown Coffee Roasters (Portland, OR). 

This plant-based, refrigerated beverage was made with oat milk from Oatly Group AB* (Malmo, Sweden) and had a pleasant mocha and oat biscuit aroma.

The texture was relatively thick and hearty (creamy, with no oat grit). (It also contained vegetable gums that contributed to the homogenized mouthfeel.)

The Stumptown coffee was present in the aroma, but not so much in the actual flavor. The taste was more oat-y, with a mild chocolate milk flavor and a hint of warm vanilla. (The added cocoa powder had been alkalized.) 

This oat-forward chilled beverage was relatively satisfying and filling. Refreshingly, it was also not too sweet (thank you!).

Welcome to Day #7 of Chocolate and Flowers Theme Week.

Today's homemade chocolate, vanilla and rose milk beverage was based on squares of a 58% Organic Semisweet Chocolate Baking Bar--made for Artisan Kettle Organic Chocolate (Madison, WI). 

A few times a year I make/create homemade chocolate items (brownies, confections, desserts, beverages, entrees, side dishes, etc.). Today's beverage blend was one of those days. 

I used this relatively bold 58% Cacao Artisan Kettle Organic Chocolate to add rich flavor to a vanilla milk and rosewater beverage (fancy chocolate milk). 

I first gently heated Organic A2/A2 Vanilla Milk (whole milk) from Alexandre Family Farms (Crescent City, CA), and stirred in 2 squares of today's dark chocolate. After cooling and chilling this mixture (with one small, dried tart cherry), I stirred in several drops of rosewater before drinking. Because this was a relatively flavorful dark chocolate, I had to add a bit more milk as I went, so the rosewater would be detectable.

The chocolate (by itself) had faint warm spice (cinnamon) and vanilla-botanical (very faint green and floral botanical) notes and a rich, true chocolate (brownie) flavor. (Cacao source was identified as "small family-owned farms in South America" on packaging.)

This organic baking chocolate made for a good eating chocolate. After tasting this, I felt this would have been great for chocolate brownies with cinnamon. In fact, upon closer examination, the inner packaging included a recipe for "Artisan Kettle Mexican Hot Chocolate Spicy Brownies." This, intuitively, seemed like a great match with/for this chocolate.

Ingredients (in base chocolate used): Organic fair trade certified chocolate liquor, organic cane sugar, organic fair trade certified cocoa butter, organic fair trade certified cocoa butter, organic sunflower lecithin, organic vanilla extract.

Today's bottle of Dark Chocolate Protein Plant-Powered Elixir was distributed by Rebbl (Emeryville, CA).

This chilled beverage had an appealing chocolate-y aroma and flavor, with faint, but not objectionable plant protein notes. (Other plant extracts or ingredients included ashwagandha,  reishi mushroom, maca root and vanilla.)

The texture was creamy and smooth and it was a great mixer/complementary beverage with a batch of homemade Holiday Hazelnut "Egg-not" Nog.*

Welcome to Day #7 of Chocolate Breakfast Theme Week.

Today's Cacao Essentials "protein-based wellness shake" was from Remedy Organics (Englewood Cliffs, NJ); and it was a great way to start the day. It was relatively light but with a rich natural taste. And it contained enough protein to stave off hunger until lunch.

Aroma notes for this vegan beverage with 14 grams of protein included plant (nut and seed, fresh green peas) and chocolate (pudding, custard).

The texture was relatively smooth (almost velvety) for a high-protein beverage. Protein drinks often have a grainy taste or mouthfeel. There was a very slight granular, astringency in the finish, but it was not bothersome.

The flavors tasted fresh and authentic, and similar to the aroma, with plant (nut and seed) and chocolate pudding notes. 

This offering (and other Remedy shakes and shots), developed by holistic nutritionist Cindy Kasindorf,  exemplify changes in public preferences and how protein "health" bars and beverages have evolved in the last few decades. 

Today's organic protein drink was made without refined sugar, gluten, dairy or artificial colors or ingredients. It was 100% plant-based (vegan). (It did contain vegetable gums, which are used as thickeners and stabilizers.) And it wasn't too sweet (thank you).

Today's Oat Latte (with) Cacao was from Elmhurst Milked, LLC (Elma, NY). The company offers plant-based milks with no added "fillers, gums or additives."

 

Today's Oat Latte possessed a rich mocha aroma--smooth but robust (flash brew Arabica) coffee and dark chocolate syrup notes with rich texture and flavor. (It was also not as sweet as the aroma seemed to indicate, which was to my liking.) This brew had a lush, oat-milk enabled liquid velvet mouthfeel. And there were no added gums or emulsifiers in this vegan, dairy-free drink. (thank you!).

Maca, Mocha, Lucuma, Mushroom Latte 

Just for fun, I also mixed a little bit of this beverage with an Essential Living Foods Maca, Lacuma and Mushroom powdered mix. The dry blend had faint caramel and light vanilla angel food cake notes that brightened up and complemented the darker coffee and cacao in today's Cacao Oat Latte beverage. A few too many flavors; but it was fun to try.

Welcome to Day #6 of Chocolate and Grass Fed Milk Theme Week.

Today's Organic Fair Trade Chocolate Cacao Grass Fed Whey Protein was from Garden of Life (Palm Beach Gardens, Florida).*

Milk adds protein. Today's single serving package provided an impressive 21 grams of protein (42% of daily value), and only 7 grams of total carbohydrate.

Once mixed (thoroughly stirred) with water, the texture was smooth. The (de-acidified) cocoa used to supply the "chocolate cacao" flavor provided a chocolatey aroma and uniform cocoa flavor. 

The flavor was sweet, but a bit too (slightly artificially) sweet for me. This mix did not contain sugar, and was sweetened with erythritol and stevia extract (leaf).  

As an added bonus, this contained 2 billion colony forming units (CFUs) worth of a strain of beneficial (probiotic) bacteria thought to improve immune function.

*Note: Garden of Life became part of Nestle Health Sciences in 2017.

Welcome to the first day (Day #1) of Chocolate and Cashew Theme Week.

While most chocolates this week involve chocolate-covered cashews, or cashews as inclusions in chocolate bars or confections, this first entry today was an alternative (nut) chocolate "milk" beverage.

Today's Silk Chocolate Cashewmilk from (WhiteWave Foods, Broomfield, CO) was advertised as being "free of dairy, soy, lactose, gluten casein, egg and MSG," and having "55% fewer calories and 33% less sugar than low-fat milk." Also, there were "no artificial flavors, colors or funny business," and no saturated fat.

Yes, but how did it taste?

It tasted a bit like commercial chocolate milk. Cashews were high up in the ingredients list, but the nut flavor was relatively mild. (Cashews do have a very subtle flavor, as far as nuts go; so perhaps they are the best choice for a dairy milk-like taste.)

The texture and sweetness level was also similar to regular chocolate milk. There was a very faint chemical/artificial flavor note, similar to what one might find in commercial chocolate milks.

Today was Day #14 of Chocolate Tea and Beverage Theme Weeks.

Bridge Brands Chocolate makes a variety of different milk and dark chocolate drops for different clients. They are sold under different brand names, and each disc-shaped drop I've tasted so far seems slightly different (There 31% and 38% cacao milk chocolate versions, and at least one organic milk chocolate.)

Some seem slightly sweeter or more "chocolatey." Regardless, today's Got Milk? Chocolate - Milk Chocolate Drops were quite good.

In answer to the question: Got Milk? Yes, in fact, I did have milk with my milk chocolate.

Chocolate Encore?

And, just in case these drops were a duplicate (from the same batch or formulation) as previous Bridge Brand made drops, I'm planning to enjoy another chocolate this evening, at Dandelion Chocolate (San Francisco).

I'm hoping Dandelion Chocolate will have an ice cold, cacao fruit smoothie, because it promises to be the first really hot day of spring.

Today was Day #8 of Chocolate Tea and Beverage Theme Weeks.

I love chai tea. Achieving the right blend of cardamom, cinnamon and pepper and other ingredients infused in hot milk/water yields a seductively fragrant and flavorful tea.

It's all about the cardamom for me. I bought a fresh bag of green cardamom pods at Patel Brothers, a small local shop, and enjoyed the aroma on the car ride home. Adding a small amount of chocolate can work as well.

I used today's Chocolate Spoon from The South Bend Chocolate Company (South Bend, IN) to stir and incorporate chocolate into this rich spicy beverage. The warmth of the tea gradually melted the chocolate adhered to (the spoon end of) this single-serving gold plastic spoon -- resulting in a blend of two wonderful, and wonderfully compatible, flavors. The chocolate was pleasant and sweet.

It's best to use this chocolate spoon for hot beverages. If you try to chill your tea or pour over ice, without fully melting/incorporating the chocolate, you'll get the liquid-equivalent of warm, soft, chocolate chips. OK, maybe that's not so bad, but our eye is used to a more uniform appearance.

Today was Day #6 of Chocolate Tea and Beverage Theme Weeks.

Neapolitan ice cream is layered with strawberry, chocolate and vanilla flavors.

Today's Strawberry Chocolate Tea from The Republic of Tea (Novato, CA) might be the closest I've come to tasting Neapolitan Tea. Made with rooibos (caffeine-free tea), carob, "cocoa kernels", natural strawberry flavor, blackberry leaves and bourbon vanilla beans, this tea was also certified gluten free.

I enjoyed this tea hot and unsweetened, and iced in a yogurt shake. Even without sugar the tea had a slightly sweet berry flavor. I normally don't care for carob, but this blend tasted fine.

*Neapolitan (also spelled Neopolitan) ice cream is a variant of spumoni, a three-flavored ice cream from Naples (Napoli), Italy. This Neapolitan style ice cream became popular in the the U.S. in the 1800s, with strawberry + chocolate + vanilla eventually becoming the flavors of choice.

Today was Day #6 of Chocolate and Maca Theme Week.

Maca is from South America, and today I stuck with an Andean theme by pairing a 55% Cacao with Goldenberries bar from Pascha Chocolate Company (Toronto, Canada) with maca powder.

The sweet, organic bar base (a product of Peru, made for Pascha) was a good complement for the sprinkle of golden berries (think of a cross between golden raisins and a tart berry) that were on the back of this dark bar.

I also blended melted shavings from this bar (without berries) with a small spoonful of TerrAmazon organic maca powder and hazelnut "milk" to make my own version of organic, maca chocolate milk.

A small amount of maca will do. The powder was a warm beige color, and had a very subtle maple-sweetness (some say butterscotch) with a very slight radish/parsnip aroma. The nuttiness in the hazelnut milk rounded this out nicely. The combination made an interesting slightly fruity, nutty, earthy and rich chocolatey drink. Add a scoop of organic vanilla ice cream in a blender, and a little fresh nutmeg, and you'd have an interesting milkshake.

The Pascha bar was Organic and Non-GMO certified, Kosher, and "free from peanuts, nuts, dairy, soy, eggs, wheat and gluten."

Today was Day #5 of Chocolate and Maca Theme Week.

I used this Maca Boost powder from Gaia Herbs (Brevard, NC) in a blueberry, strawberry, kale and coconut milk smoothie. It doesn't have to be this complicated. A bit of this powder in your chocolate milkshake or simple chocolate smoothie would probably be just fine as well.

This organic, unsweetened Maca Boost powder contained cacao, Peruvian maca root, ginger and rhodiola*.

*Golden Root or Rhodiola rosea is a flowering plant that grows in the Arctic and colder regions of Europe and Russia that is used by some as a "tonic herb."

Someone was handing out free sample bottles of Silk Soymilk near Union Square in San Francisco, CA. I picked up the Chocolate flavor.

Fake milks, or what I call "filks," are often hit and miss in the flavor and texture department. Distributed by WhiteWave Foods (Broomfield, CO), this Silk Chocolate Soymilk, was lactose free and made from organic soybeans; and it was smooth, and better than I thought it might be. It was actually quite good.
