Warning: Another Childhood Reverie - Chocolate Ice Cubes

When we were kids, my sisters and I would bicycle down to a small corner grocery store to buy gum or candy. It would get us out of the house, give us some exercise, and it was during a time when parents apparently either worried less about something happening to their kids on cross-town adventures like this, or when families were bigger and it was not possible to have enough energy to focus parental anxiety on just one or two children.

So, we bicycled around town with a few quarters in our pockets, and we felt a sense of wealth and freedom that thousands of dollars can't buy. One of our prized candy treasures was the chocolate "Ice Cube." It was a simple foil-wrapped square of plain chocolate, and we gaged our wealth by how many chocolate Ice Cubes we could buy on a given trip/day. They cost about two cents each at the corner store. Ice Cubes were the gold standard of kid.

Today, it's possible to find Moritz Ice Cubes in some stores, and today I located and bought one. It was Good, although not quite so fantastic as I remember. However, it was worth it just to remember that sense of abundance from long ago.
