Calories: 585 calories (per label) in 9 pieces

Welcome to Day #9 of Chocolate Banquet's 20th Anniversary Celebration Week--featuring chocolates primarily from San Francisco Bay Area companies that helped make this adventure possible early on.

As mentioned previously this week, there were many fewer bean-to-bar craft chocolate makers in 2006. But, thankfully, several trained chocolatiers and chefs also started offering bean-to-bar chocolate confections.

Michael Recchiuti began creating and making chocolates and confections in San Francisco in 1997. (Recchiuti also briefly had a space in Dogpatch called the Chocolate Lab which was great fun--a showcase for creative chocolate and culinary talent. The inside had a classy black and white design/decor. Liquids were often served in chemistry beakers vs. typical glass pitchers.)

The first Recchiuti Confections chocolate featured on this site (a ginger chocolate heart) on September 17, 2006 -- was only six days after Chocolate Banquet started.

No. 9 Box flavor descriptions

In honor of Day #9 of this celebratory theme week, I tried Recchiuti's "No. 9 Box"--a 9-piece dark and milk chocolate assortment box with the following flavors:

1.) Triple Sesame Praline - roasted sesame seeds from Japan folded into milk chocolate hazelnut ganache, finished with a dark chocolate blend

2.) Coconut Marzipan - "...flavors of coconut made into marzipan"...lime zest; a 45% cacao milk signature blend

3.) Framboise Strata - bright, fruity "raspberry gelee atop a creamy dark chocolate ganache..."

4.) Banana Caramel - pureed banana flavor folded into rich caramel

5.) Citrus - kalamansi (citrus) puree in a "blended chocolate ganache"

6.) Rosemary Olive - "lemony, pine-like flavor" of rosemary with "a hint of peppery sage finish" with olives, under a dark chocolate coating

7.) Maple Pecan Praline - sweet caramel-like maple syrup with pecan praline ganache topped with a toasted pecan and more chocolate

8.) Currant Cognac - "Zante currants marinated in Cognac, blended into a dark and milk chocolate ganache...coated with dark chocolate"

10.) Cappuccino - "San Francisco coffee roaster, Linea's, 'Little Wing' blend infused into cream, butter & 45% dark milk chocolate "(lends) a "cappuccino-like richness to this mocha truffle."

When I asked about new/single origin flavors, I was told that the company is now using Valrhona chocolate (vs. single origin cacao chocolates they may have used previously).

I enjoyed the balanced and thoughtful flavors in this collection. The milk, dark and white chocolates used were smooth; and the fruit, herb, nut and other flavors held my interest during this tasty 9-course chocolate meal.

The ingredients list was long, in part due to the fact that there were nine different chocolate recipes nestled in one small box; and in part due to a fairly long list of additives (and a small amount of wheat)--the only downside to this review.

Ingredients: Dark Chocolate (Cocoa Beans, Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Sunflower Lecithin (Emulsifier), Vanilla Extract, Whole Milk Powder, E476 [Emulsifier]), Milk Chocolate (Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Whole Milk Powder, Cocoa Beans, Sunflower Lecithin [Emulsifier], Vanilla Extract), Sugar, Cream, Pecans, White Chocolate (Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Whole Milk Powder, Sunflower Lecithin [Emulsifier], Vanilla Extract, Coconut, Raspberry Puree (Raspberry), Hazelnuts, Dark Chocolate Hollow Form (Sugar, Cocoa Beans, Cocoa Butter, Sunflower Lecithin [Emulsifier], Vanilla Extract), Glucose Syrup (Wheat, Sulfites), Maple Syrup, Butter (Cream, Natural Flavor), Coconut Puree (Coconut, Invert Sugar), Banana Puree (Banana, Ascorbic Acid), Cocoa Butter, Invert Sugar, Lime Puree (Kalamansi), Dried Currants, Black & Golden & White Sesame Seeds, Cognac, Colored Cocoa Butter (Cocoa Butter, Contains One or More of the Following: Blue 1&2, Red 40, Yellow 5&6, and Natural Colors), Pear Puree (Pears), Water, Dextrose Powder, Green Olives (Olives, Water, Salt, Citric Acid), Coffee Beans, Salt, Tartaric Acid, Pectin (Pectin, Sucrose, Acidity Regulators: E450111, E33211, and E330), Honey, Lime Zest, Fleur de Sel (French Sea Salt), and Rosemary.

Happy Valentines Day and welcome to Day #1 of Chocolate and Strawberries Theme Week.
Roses, chocolates and red berries (heart-shaped strawberries fit right in) go together on this romantic February holiday.

Big, plump, sweet ripe strawberries hand-dipped in dark chocolate. These were as tasty as they were visually appealing.

I also revisited a San Francisco classic...dark chocolate truffles with a hint of burnt caramel from Recchuiti Confections (San Francisco, CA) that I found across the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito, CA. Fittingly, these truffles were adorned with images of this iconic bay area bridge.

Dogpatch chocolate field trip - April 17, 2013

Chocolate(s) of the Day:

Chocolate Lab
Ice-Cream Sundae
Very Good
Weight: unknown
Calories: unknown
Cost: $9.00 for 1 sundae
Purchased from: Chocolate Lab, San Francisco, CA

Today was Day #3 of Chocolate and Spirits Theme Week. A friend and I took a field trip to San Francisco today to search for good food, interesting places, and chocolates in this category.

We went to Dogpatch (east of the Mission District and adjacent to Potrero Hill), a relatively small neighborhood in San Francisco with a very high chocolate Intelligence Quotient (IQ), thanks to a long list of creative entrepreneurs and establishments.

I chose two chocolate + spirits items, from 1.) Michael Recchiuti (Chocolate Lab and Little Nib), and 2.) Ian Flores and Annabelle Topacio (aka the ice cream power couple behind Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous).

Other notable chocolatiers and chocolate makers in the up-and-coming Dogpatch area include Poco Dolce, Kika's Treats, Alter Eco, and the ghosts of Joseph Schmidt (which disappeared after Hershey's bought them several years ago) and Dandelion Chocolate (moved to the Mission District of San Francisco); and the list goes on.

Not Just Any Ice Cream Sundae
The "Ice-Cream Sundae" at the Chocolate Lab was not your typical ice cream sundae. Three small scoops of Burnt Caramel ice cream were topped with an assortment of Recchuiti chocolate covered hazelnuts, almonds and peanut butter pearls, and house made (lightly roasted) marshmallows. The sundae was served with a little white pitcher of extra bitter chocolate sauce to pour over the ice cream.

I also asked for a tiny side of Fee Brothers Aztec Chocolate Bitters (the type used in cocktails), that (in very small doses - 1 drop at a time) was an interesting complement to the sundae. (This chocolate hued flavoring agent contributed some extra "spirits" to this already complex and wonderfully flavorful sundae.) Thank you to the Chocolate Lab staff, once again, for humoring me and enabling small tasting experiments.

And, Even More Ice Cream
We couldn't leave Dogpatch without a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous, a high-end ice cream (and baked goods) shop that opened in 2010 with a fresh, creative twist -- including a few ice creams with alcohol, spirits or liqueurs. The closest flavor with both chocolate (or something with a cacao origin) + spirits on today's menu: the ice cream version of the "Pink Squirrel" -- a cocktail made with Creme de Cacao, Creme de Noyaux (think bitter almonds, or Amaretto) and cream. This Pink Squirrel ice cream was a delicate pastel pink (from the Creme de Noyaux) and had a smooth, almond kernel flavor.

Recchiuti Confections - Feve bar - February 5, 2013

Chocolate(s) of the Day:

Recchiuti Confections
Feve bar
Good+
Weight: .75 oz. (21.25 g.) / 3 oz. (85 g.) in 1 bar
Calories: 120 calories in 1/4 bar
Cost: $5.99 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Paradise Foods, Corte Madera, CA

Today was Day #7 of Chocolate and Nibs Theme Week, and the first chocolate of the day was a Feve bar from Recchiuti (San Francisco, CA). Feve is a French word for bean or, in this case, many small pebble-sized pieces of unsweetened, roughly ground cocoa bean, or nibs, that hadn't yet been made into chocolate.

Cacao nibs gave this dark bar a crunchy, somewhat nutty texture. It was so richly textured with nibs, it was difficult to make out the stamped "R" and the name Recchiuti on the top side of this bar.

Nib hunt at Little Nib, Chocolate Lab

In search of more nib-related items from this chocolatier, I drove to San Francisco to investigate two new Recchiuti establishments.

The Little Nib and the Chocolate Lab (a few doors down from each other in the Dogpatch neighborhood of the City) opened last September and November (2012), respectively.

The former, Little Nib, was a small retail space that sold Recchiuti chocolates and bars. I knew I was in the right place, when the shop clerk pointed to a glass jar on the counter, with a metal scoop. The jar was filled with almond-sized, dark brown, dried cocoa beans -- where nibs originate. However, except for today's Feve bar, there were no other chocolates in the shop that featured cacao nibs.

So, I moved on to the Chocolate Lab, a cafe with both savory and sweet dishes, to have an early dinner. I've included pictures of part of a light, wedge-shaped piece of goat cheese souffle served with a pretty side salad and house-made pickled vegetables, and also a shrimp salad, just to prove that I occasionally eat something other than chocolate.

I also enjoyed an affogato with Recchiuti burnt caramel ice cream and espresso. But, let's face it, as tasty as these items were, I was here for the chocolate devil's food cake with the cacao nib infused foam on top.

The Chocolate Lab Cake was sitting in a mahogony-colored pool of coffee creme anglais, topped with a fluffy, subtly flavored nib infused foam, and sprinkled with caramelized nibs. A collar of bittersweet chocolate (printed with the words Chocolate Lab) encircled the cake and foam. I bypassed the cake part (couldn't have gluten), but throughly enjoyed the richly appointed adornments: foam, nibs, chocolate and sauce.

Thank you to the helpful staff who provided assistance with gluten-free options.

Today was Day #2 of Chocolate, Seeds and Berries Theme Week.

I'm from California, and am proud to live in the "land of fruit and nuts." I lived elsewhere for a time. However, I was never so happy as when I returned home and had access to fresh produce again, from  trees in yards, nearby markets, or the occasional road stand.

Even better, has been the access to so many items -- such as seeds and berries -- that grow in the Golden State that combine so nicely with chocolate.

Sesame seeds grow in the Middle East, Asia, and elsewhere, and can be used for either sweet or savory foods. They appear in desserts and dishes from many different cultures in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Today I tried a dark milk chocolate, Sesame Nougatine bar, from Recchiuti Confections (San Francisco, CA)*, a variation on Recchiuti's Sesame Nougatine Truffle.

Bursts of toasted sesame seed clusters, cooked with cane sugar and sea salt (fleur de sel), poked out of this bar. The chocolate was fairly smooth -- no strong or acidic notes; however, the initial flavor (bites of chocolate without sesame seeds) was not quite what I expected. It could have been the vanilla extract I was tasting.

I enjoyed the slightly crunchy areas of sesame nougatine. The sweet and salty flavors were subtle and well balanced.

The fresh raspberries and blackberries that I paired with this bar seemed to improve the overall taste of the chocolate.

*Note: Michael Recchiuti and crew operate a "Chocolate Lab" in San Francisco. Watch for a future write-up or on this Lab location and tasting space.

Recchiuti - Orchard bar - December 31, 2012

Chocolate of the Day:

Recchiuti Confections
Orchard bar
Good - Good +
Weight: 1 oz. (28.3 g.) / 3 oz. (85 g.)
Calories: 140 calories (estimate) for 1 oz. serving
Cost: $8.00 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Main Street Wine Bar and Bottle Shop, Sausalito, CA

I'm recording this chocolate bar by the numbers...

Today was Day #10 of Chocolate and Almond Theme Week; Day #4 of Chocolate and Currant Theme Week; and Day #31 of December 2012. Happy New Year's Eve to all, and best wishes for a happy and  healthy new year!

Allow me to count the ways that I enjoyed the Orchard bar from Recchiuti Confections (San Francisco).

1.) The mulberries - poking out on all sides of the bar. I love fresh mulberries, so it was fun to see them play a prominent role in this bar
2.) The almonds - the toasted almond pieces took a back seat to the fruit, but were a great choice for this fruit and nut orchard-themed bar.
3.) The currants - a salute to the flavorful few
4.) The design of this dark bar - very nice mold and graphics with the "R" for Recchiuti, that also let the mulberries show through the edges

Chocolate of the Day:

1 piece
Rose Caramel
Recchiuti Confections
Very Good
Weight: .3 oz. (8.5 g.)
Calories: 45 calories (estimate)
Cost: $1.80
Purchased from: Recchiuti Confections (store), Ferry Building, San Francisco, CA

Today was Day #8 of Chocolate and Flower Theme Week -- one of many theme weeks I am happy to extend by a few days to fit in more excellent chocolates in this category.

This unique-looking, elongated, triangular piece from Recchiuti Confections (based in San Francisco, CA) was a classy mix of 3 looks: white chocolate on the top, darker chocolate on the base, and rich caramel-colored -- well, soft, flowing caramel -- in the middle.

There was just enough rose flavor in the caramel to make it intriguing -- intriguingly frustrating that is. Recchiuti does make fine chocolate confections; however, their flavors are a bit more muted than I'd like sometimes. The chocolate is taking center stage and not the flavors -- in their truffles and filled chocolate case at least. Just roll me in the most fragrant rose petals available and I'd be a happy gal.

Chocolate of the Day:

Recchiuti Confections
Fleur de Sel
Very Good
Weight: .4 oz. (11.32 g.) for 2 pcs (estim - per info at store)
Calories: 60 calories
Cost: $2.40 for 2 pieces
Purchased from: Recchiuti Confections, Ferry Building, San Francisco, CA

Recchiuti (based in San Francisco, CA) has a nice little shop in the Ferry Building in San Francisco. Market Street dead-ends in front of this building on the West side, and the San Francisco Bay lies to the East. The Ferry Building is lined with shops and is a foodie paradise of sorts. Good place to shop for chocolates.

This smooth, two-bite, Fleur de Sel from Recchiuti was filled with flavorful burnt caramel with just the right amount of soft stretch-and-chew to it, and flecked with tiny pieces of French sea salt.

Today was Day #5 of Chocolate and Sea Salt Theme Week, and Day #1 of Chocolate and Salt Caramel Theme Week. There may be a fair amount of overlap between these two theme weeks. In any case, adding caramel was a good excuse to prolong the experimentations with chocolate, salt and sugar.

At $85.00 (USD) per pound, my expectations for chocolate rise accordingly, and Recchiuti does deliver fine, well-manicured chocolates. The good news: a few small pieces of Sesame Nougat chocolate (with crunchy bits of caramelized sesame seeds and dark chocolate ganache) can be very satisfying.

Day #5 of Chocolate and Cherry Theme Week. Today's choice was: "A combo of dried Michigan tart cherries and candies wild Italian cherries" -- both types covered in chocolate of course -- from Recchiuti Confections.

Recchiuti is a high-end San Francisco, CA, based chocolate vendor, with a location in the San Francisco Ferry Building -- a foodie paradise.

However, I purchased these chocolate cherries from Fog City News, a great source for chocolates, news, and cards, a few blocks inland on Market Street.

Recchiuti
Star Anise and Pink Peppercorn
Very Good
Weight: ~ .45 oz. (estim.)
Calories: 65? calories
Cost: $ ?
Bought at: Recchiuti, SF Ferry Building, San Francisco, CA

Recchiuti is a high-end supplier of carefully executed chocolate jewels that you can view at the company's attractive display case in the San Francisco Ferry Building. They're pricey, but good.

Trying today's Recchiuti chocolate with spices helped mask my frustration over not having more time to hunt down a more Halloween-specific chocolate to feature for today -- Halloween. One of the biggest chocolate holidays of the year.

I tried looking in Latino markets close to home for chocolate skulls or skull molds associated with El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead, celebrated in Mexico), another late autumn holiday celebrated this week, but no luck.

Vosges chocolates' web site looked like they carried chocolate skulls, but I couldn't find them online (at least in time for this year). Next year!
