Chocolate Math - Day # 477 of eating chocolates

As the clock turns over into 2008, I've now eaten a different kind of chocolate each day for 477 days in a row.

How much chocolate is that? Below are the answers I've been giving to people this week who have asked me...It's Chocolate Math time!

Q? 1.) How many pounds of chocolate items have you eaten?
If I've averaged about 1 oz. of chocolate each day for the last 477 days, then I've eaten 477 ounces. Four hundred seventy-seven ounces divided by 16 oz (in a pound) and you get 29.8125 pounds of chocolate items consumed in the last 15 1/2 months.

Q? 2.) How many calories worth in chocolate items?
If I've averaged just a little over 1 oz., or approximately 165 calories per item, each day, then
477 days x 165 calories = 78,705 total calories
(78,705 calories divided by 3,500 calories in 1 pound = 22.49 pounds worth)

Q? 3.) How much money have I spent on these chocolate items so far?
If I've averaged approximately $1.50 an item each day, then $1.50 x 477 days = $715.50 USD (U.S. dollars).

Q? 4.) How many pounds have I gained?
I think I've gained approximately 6-7 pounds since I started this bet on September 11, 2006. Actually, I don't know; I'm just guessing here as I didn't weigh myself back then when I started. So, while that is a lot of weight gain for me, all this chocolate ended up taking the place of other things I would have eaten (such as other dessert or carbohydrate items). In other words, it could have been worse if I hadn't stopped eating some of these other carbs. I didn't gain the whole 22.49 lbs. mentioned above in question # 2.

Q? 5.) What is your blood cholesterol level(s)? Has your cholesterol gone up?
No, it's actually gone down (when I had my last tests done a few months ago at least).

Cappuccino truffle

Last night was New Year's Eve. And, I stayed up late talking on the phone, and watching youtube videos of the ball dropping in Times Square, New York City at midnight.

So, a Cappuccino truffle (i.e. something with some chocolate and coffee in it) from Godiva sounded appropriate.

To greet the New Year, I fixed black-eyed peas and greens (honoring a Southern tradition); took a walk out by the San Francisco Baylands (along with many, many others who had the same idea); cleaned up the house; and went to a movie. I feel like 2008 will be a better year. Yes, I do.

Happy New Year all!

I happen to like coconut and chocolate, and Godiva chocolates, so no surprise that I enjoyed this truffle flavor combination.

I really enjoy gingerbread flavors in coffee and chocolate drinks and desserts, so it's not a great surprise that I really liked this truffle.

This truffle has inspired me to make some kind of flourless chocolate gingerbread cake (maybe a variant of one of the recipes on the Godiva web site).

I'll add this cooking opportunity to my New Year's resolution and "to do" lists. It is December 29, and I'm down to one of the last days of the year (2007), so to do lists are on my mind as I try to finish some items that haven't gotten done yet. I probably shouldn't be adding more items to my list right now - but, what the heck, it's chocolate-related, so it will at least be more fun than all the clean-up, organizing, recycling, laundry, personal biography/resume updating, and other tasks I seem to be putting off at the moment. Happy de-cluttering and de-to-do-listing to everyone.

Chocolate of the Day:

1 piece/truffle
Seattle Chocolates
Cafe Mocha
Good -Very Good.
Weight: .4 oz. (11.32 g.) (estimate)
Calories: 70 calories (estimate)
Cost: $0 (gift)
I received in my Christmas stocking at a family celebration a few days ago.

The coffee taste in some Seattle Chocolates items is a bit too strong (burnt flavor?) for me. This is surprising as I really like strong coffee flavors and I also tend not to mind crispy-singed BBQ veggies, potatoes, and meat items. I salute Seattle Chocolates in that they are not afraid to go for it with the intense coffee roast here. I'd rather see bold statements like this than be frustrated by chocolates where the flavors are lost or too weak/muddled.

Can you take flavors too far? Other than the chocolate-covered bugs I tried, I'd have to say I haven't found too many chocolates that I thought were too strongly flavored - other than those that perhaps use artificial flavors which don't taste quite right. Start with a good base chocolate, and I think almost any great flavor might work. Just my opinion.
