Chocolate Sorbet + Chai almonds - July 2, 2013

Chocolate of the Day:

Double Rainbow Gourmet Ice Creams, Inc.
Chocolate Sorbet
Good +
Weight: 1/4 cup (50 g.) / 1 Pint (474 mL) total container
Calories: 60 calories in 1/4 cup
Cost: $ N/A
Purchased from: Piazza's Fine Foods, Palo Alto, CA

July is National Ice Cream month in the U.S. There's nothing like a bowl of rich and refreshing ice cream on a hot summer day. I searched for chai tea ice cream, a seasonal favorite that does show up from time to time (although usually in the fall or winter) in a few San Francisco shops. But, I had no luck finding it in stock in July. So, I made my own version of this creamy, spicy tea flavor.

I chose a lower fat, frozen, chai-flavored dessert -- Chocolate Sorbet from Double Rainbow Gourmet Ice Creams, Inc. (San Francisco, CA) and topped a small scoop with gluten-free, Chai Bliss Almonds from Olomomo Nut Co. (Longmont, CO); cardamom*; and a cherry.

At only 60 calories in a 1/4 cup serving, this sorbet had a rich chocolate taste without being too filling. The Olomomo Chai almonds and other ingredients helped spice things up and added some crunchy texture and fun microbursts of chai tea flavor, that paired nicely with the chocolate.

Today was Day #5 of Chocolate and Chai Theme Week.

*Note: green cardamom pods look lovely, and have a bright, citrus spice flavor often associated with chai (tea). However, ground cardamom (powder) may be more practical (and enjoyable) dessert topping for all except the cardamom-obsessed.

Scream Sorbet - Coconut Chocolate sorbet - January 19, 2013

Chocolate of the Day:

Scream Sorbet
Coconut Chocolate sorbet
Good +
Weight: .1 oz. (2.8 g.) (estimate)
Calories: 10 calories (estimate)
Cost: $N/A - taste
Purchased from: Scream Sorbet, San Francisco Ferry Building, SF, CA

What was better than attending the Good Food Award Winners marketplace tasting, at the SF Ferry Building, this morning?

...Seeing a sign for Scream Sorbet (Oakland, CA), a regular at the Saturday morning farmers market outside at this same location. I've visited the Scream Sorbet storefront in Oakland, with a two coolers in tow, to take various exotic, fresh flavors home. (Hazelnut Chocolate, Fennel Citrus, Lemon Beet, others). Happily, the company also sells (12 oz. containers and cups of sorbet) at farmers markets in the Bay Area.

Flavors listed on the chalkboard for today included Coconut Chocolate, a new one for me. Perfect for Day #5 of Chocolate and Coconut Theme Week.

Since I was on the go today (and far away from a refrigerator or freezer), I settled for a small tasting spoon's worth of lovely, creamy chocolat sorbet flavored with coconut.

As I was savoring this little lump of goodness on my tiny white spoon, others queued up for some cups of sorbet. Some were quite certain they'd received ice cream instead. Easy mistake to make. However, there were no dairy or eggs in this wonderful frozen line.

ChocolateBet: January 17, 2012

Chocolate of the Day:

Scream Sorbet
Hazelnut Chocolate sorbet
Very Good +
Weight: 3 oz. serving / 12 oz. total container
Calories: 160 calories (estimate)
Cost: $8.00 (estimate)
Purchased from: Scream Sorbet, Oakland, CA

Today was Day #3 of Chocolate and Nut Butter Theme Week.

Scream Sorbet's (Oakland, CA) Hazelnut Chocolate sorbet contained just five lovely ingredients: water, Inzana Ranch hazelnuts, Askinosie San Jose del Tambo cocoa powder, sugar, and sea salt. The rich, creamy texture and high quality flavors may fool you into thinking you're savoring some very fine ice cream. Worth every penny.

ChocolateBet: December 8, 2009

Chocolate of the Day #2:
1 serving
Manresa (Restaurant)
Chocolate and hazelnut feuillentine, olive oil with
Bitter chocolate sorbet with sea salt
Very Good + - Yum
Weight: ~ 4 oz. (estimate)
Calories: ~ 200 calories (estimate)
Cost: $ NA (company holiday dinner)
Purchased from: NA - served at Manresa, in Los Gatos, CA

Oh wait. One more chocolate to add today. A bonus entry for Chocolate & Nut Theme Week, this chocolate dessert was worthy of note. It was the last dish in a multi-course holiday dinner. Two small pieces of velvety soft dark ganache/mousse were coated with finely ground cacoa powder, and topped with a dark chocolate sorbet. (I donated the very thin chocolate crisps, i.e. with wheat in them, to Alec.)
