The Greek Gods - Chocolate Strawberry yogurt - Jan. 31, 2018

Chocolate of the Day:

The Hain Celestial Group, Inc.
The Greek Gods - Chocolate Strawberry Yogurt
Good
Weight: 1 cup (227 g.) / 24 oz. (680 g.) in total container
Calories: 300 calories in 1 (cup) serving
Cost: $1.99 for 1 container
Purchased from: Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #9 of Chocolate and Fruit Theme Week.

Today's Chocolate Strawberry Yogurt made for and distributed by The Hain Celestial Group, Inc. (Lake Success, NY/Boulder, CO).

The chocolate-colored yogurt was rich and had an almost velvety creaminess and uniformity after being stirred.

Chocolate yogurts, even Greek style, tend to have a certain tanginess that may be off-putting to some. However, if you love yogurt and you love chocolate and fruit, then today's Chocolate Strawberry yogurt might make a great addition to a fresh strawberry fruit plate.

Or add a fresh banana, and a dollop of vanilla yogurt and enjoy a yogurt version of a banana split.

The Hain Celestial Group - Chocolate Mocha Greek Style Yogurt - June 9, 2017

Chocolate of the Day:

The Greek Gods - Greek Style Yogurt
Chocolate Mocha flavored with other natural flavor

Calories: 150 calories in 1/2 cup serving
Cost: $1.99 for 1 container

Welcome to Day #2 of Chocolate and Coffee Theme Week.

Today's chocolate and coffee flavored item was a yogurt. The Greek Gods Chocolate Mocha Greek Style Yogurt was Manufactured for and Distributed by The Hain Celestial Group, Inc. (Lake Success, NY).

It's not always easy to blend chocolate and yogurt. The slightly acidic tangy flavor of yogurt can clash with chocolate. Today's Chocolate Mocha yogurt was successful in making this mix work.

The yogurt was smooth and creamy and the mocha blend was flavorful without being too sweet.

While it did contain vegetable gums, the ingredients list was relatively straight-forward, mercifully short and "natural," with no starches or artificial colors or flavors added.

Almond Dream
Cappuccino Swirl non-dairy frozen dessert

Calories: 70 calories in 1/4 cup
Cost: $4.19 for 1 Pint
Purchased from: Piazza's Fine Foods, Palo Alto, CA

Today was Day #5 of Chocolate and Coffee Theme Week.

For those looking for a lighter, non-dairy alternative to ice cream, today's Almond Dream, Cappuccino Swirl non-dairy frozen dessert, from The Hain Celestial Group, Inc. (Melville, NY) might be something to try. At only 140 calories in 1/2 cup serving, compared to 250 calories for a fuller fat ice cream, I could enjoy this along with some fruit for lunch.

The coffee + cocoa swirls, running through a a fairly creamy base (made from almonds), boosted the flavor a bit more than plainer flavors.

Today was Day #9 of Chocolate and Mediterranean Theme Week. And I enjoyed two products that mixed chocolate and sesame seeds.

The first, was an Israeli Halva from Achdut, Ltd.: Achva Marble Sesame Halva -- a swirled blend of plain/vanilla and chocolate halva, shaped into a dense loaf and packaged in a 1 pound plastic tub. I cut a small slice to try. This grainy, sweet, nut-seed flavored paste looks like it might have come from a dessert or warm, dry climate.

In fact, the tiny sesame seed comes from a flowering plant that moved into Egypt, Turkey, and other Mediterranean countries many centuries ago, from "the Indian sub-continent or Spice Islands," according to what I read online. (Sesame seeds are grown in the U.S., primarily in Arizona and Texas.) The seeds were apparently used initially for oil or wine, and later for food and flavoring. The simple combination of sesame seeds and honey evolved into to modern day halva(s).

Today's second chocolate and sesame item was gluten free bar from The Hain Celestial Group, fortified "with vitamins, minerals and prebiotics to support digestion." The bar also contained chocolate chips and cocoa powder; brown rice syrup; flax seeds; and roasted peanuts -- resulting in a rich, glossy and chewy rendition of a seed bar laced with chocolate.
