Welcome to Day #5 of Chocolate and Mint Theme Week, featuring chocolates that contain a member of the very large mint family--that includes basil.

And in honor of Halloween Week (and the fact I tried a similar Strawberry & Basil bar from the same company many years ago), I added the Black Cat Bar to try along with its lightly basil-flavored chocolate sibling.

Both were Moonstruck Chocolate bars from Portland, OR. (The Black Cat Bar was manufactured by CW Moonstruck LLC (Portland, OR); and the Strawberry and Basil bar was manufactured by Moonstruck Chocolate Co. in Portland, OR). Both were made with UTZ Certified Cocoa.*

Black Cat Bar - Dark Chocolate

Aroma and flavor notes for this smooth, attractive, (and I assume) seasonal chocolate included: roasted, smooth and chocolate-y dark chocolate (pudding, mousse), vanilla, and faint marshmallow.

I loved the simple but striking appearance of a dark (black) cat silhouetted against a full moon (white chocolate), and the light sparkling of stars (vanilla sugar crystals) in the dark chocolate sky and reflected in dark ground below.

Ingredients: "Dark Chocolate (Unsweetened Chocolate, Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin, Natural Vanilla Flavor), White Chocolate (Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Whole Milk Powder, Nonfat Dry Milk, Butterfat, Soy Lecithin (An Emulsifier), Vanilla Extract), Vanilla Sugar (Cane Sugar, Vanilla Powder), Natural Toasted Marshmallow Flavor Extract (Vegetable Glycerin, Natural Flavor)."

Allergen-related information: "Allergens: Milk, Soy."

Dark Chocolate Strawberry Basil bar

Aroma and flavor notes included: chocolate, warm spices (clove, cinnamon), and refreshing, tart-sweet fruit (red berry).

The basil was fleeting and faint, but the tiny green pieces were an attractive, colorful complement to the red strawberry bits on the dark chocolate. I was a little confused by the faint warm spices; but 'tis the season.

Ingredients: "Semisweet Chocolate (Unsweetened chocolate, sugar, cocoa butter, cocoa powder, soy lecithin, vanilla extract.) Basil Herb Sugar (sugar crystals, basil), Freeze Dried Strawberries."

Allergen-related information: "Manufactured on shared equipment. May contain traces of milk, wheat, soy, peanuts, sesame and tree nuts"

Moonstruck - Spicy Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Chai 68% Cacao (bar) - Dec. 19, 2021

Chocolate of the Day

Moonstruck
Spicy Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Chai 68% Cacao (bar)
Good +
Weight: 1.5 oz. (42.5 g.) / 3 oz. (85 g.) in total bar
Calories: 215 calories in 1/2 bar
Cost: $3.99 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Andronico's Community Markets, Los Altos, CA

Welcome to Day #10 of Chocolate and Hazelnuts Theme Week.

Today's Spicy Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Chai 68% Cacao (bar) was from Moonstruck Chocolate Co. (Portland, OR).

There was a lot going on with this bar. (See ingredients list below.) The aroma notes for this chocolate included: sweet chocolate marshmallow candy with black pepper; German pfeffernusse ("pepper nut") or Icelandic/Nordic pepperkakor cookies; and spices (salt, pepper, ginger and vanilla).

Flavor notes included the aroma notes above, but dark chocolate, and to a lesser extent hazelnut, flavors were prominent. The 68% cacao dark chocolate was relatively sweet and uniform. Bits of hazelnut, and flecks of citrus rind, salt and pepper gave off temporary tiny bursts of these flavors.

This bar grew on me as I tasted it over the course of an hour. It started out feeling a bit cluttered with so many sweet and savory elements. However, as my palette adjusted to this festive spice party, it became more appealing.

Included at no extra cost to you: thoughts of enjoying European holiday treats, while warming up around a fire in the winter with some hot spiced cider or wine. Happy Holidays.

Ingredients: Dark chocolate (unsweetened chocolate, sugar, cocoa butter, soy lecithin (emulsifier), natural vanilla flavor); roasted hazelnuts; chai spice blend (organic cardamom, organic clove, organic cinnamon, organic orange peel, organic fennel, organic ginger, organic black pepper); black tea powder; organic black pepper; organic cardamom; kosher salt.

Allergen-related information: (Contains hazelnuts, soy.) "Manufactured on shared equipment. May contain traces of milk, wheat, soy, peanuts and tree nuts."

Cost: $17.00 for 1 package
Purchased from: Chocolate Covered, San Francisco, CA

Welcome to Day #2 of Chocolate and Strawberries Theme Week.
Today's Dark Chocolate Strawberry Truffles from Moonstruck Chocolate Co. (Portland, CA) were creatively designed to look like strawberries.

However, because these sweet, strawberry-shaped chocolate confections, it was discovered, had been featured here before (as part of a Moonstruck summer fruit sampler a few years ago), another chocolate item was needed today.

Fortunately, there were back-up chocolates available, and duplication was avoided once again.
And, the primary chocolate today became a plant protein drink from Califia* Farms (Bakersfield, CA, with corporate offices in the downtown arts district of Los Angeles, CA).

The company's Choc-A-Maca Protein Almondmilk** beverage had a relatively creamy texture and authentic "chocolate milk" taste, with a slight plant (pea, rice) protein texture and aftertaste.

*Queen Califia of Spanish legend ruled over the mythical island of California.

**Ingredients: Almondmilk (water, almonds), cane sugar, pea protein isolate, cocoa liquor, cocoa powder (processed with alkali), natural flavors, calcium carbonate, brown rice protein, maca root, sunflower lecithin, sea salt, potassium citrate, monk fruit juice concentrate, locust bean gum, gellan gum

Cost: $10.00 for 1 bar

Welcome to Day #7 of Chocolate and Cherries Theme Week, and Day #1 of Chocolate and Flowers Week.

Today's bar, the Edible Flowers and Cherries bar (Recipe No. 011) from Moonstruck Chocolate Co. (Portland, OR), marked a transition between cherries and flowers.

It was a very attractive, eye-catching bar, with "crystallized pansies on dark chocolate accented with Bing cherry pieces and rose and violet petals."

A bit too sweet for me, I couldn't taste any of the rose or violet flower notes. However, sugar preserved the flowers, and sugared bits of sweet and very slightly tart cherry were fruity and chewy.

Welcome to Day #3 of Chocolate, Fruit and Nut Theme Week. This week includes fruit and nut chocolates confections from the Portland, OR, area, purchased during a visit last weekend.

Today's chocolates were bought at Moonstruck Chocolate Co. (Portland, OR). Their tiny gem of a chocolate shop (in downtown Portland) was at capacity with 5 or 6 people inside; but it contained a dazzling display of sugary confections, filled chocolates and a few bars.

Today's Caramelized Hazelnuts Tumbled in Milk Chocolate were sweet and crunchy with a smooth, almost velvety jacket of 31% cacao milk chocolate. These were too sweet for me, but might be perfect for someone who has a sweet tooth, and appreciates the company's use of local foods and flavors (local distilled spirits, beers, hazelnuts, fruits, etc.)

I paired these with two different kinds of fruit-shaped truffles from Moonstruck's Summer Fruits Collection. They seemed like a good visual match or pairing with the hazelnuts. And, it just seemed like a Chocolate Banquet thing to do. The dark chocolate filled strawberry and the lighter-colored peach were also too sweet for me but, visually, they looked great, rivaling the traditional small whole "fruits" crafted from marzipan (sweet almond paste).

Moonstruck has been producing chocolates in the Portland area for more than 20 years. Thank you to the young woman in the shop who provided great counter help.

Moonstruck - Raspberries and Fennel Sugar - July 4, 2015

Chocolate of the Day:

Moonstruck Chocolate Co.
Raspberries and Fennel Sugar bar
Good ++ - Very Good
Weight: 1 oz. (28.3 g.) / 3.17 oz. (90 g.) in total bar
Calories: 150 calories (estimate) in 1 oz. (28.3 g.) serving
Cost: $9.99 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Piazza's Fine Foods, Palo Alto, CA

Today was Day #11 of Chocolate and Botanicals Theme Week; and Happy 4th of July to all out there celebrating the Independence Day holiday.

This dark chocolate Raspberry and Fennel Sugar bark bar from Moonstruck Chocolate Co. (Portland, OR) was adorned with a rosy red riot of freeze-dried raspberry bits, and a sprinkling of pale green fennel sugar pieces (that incorporated "edible fennel flowers").

The raspberry flavor was so concentrated and berry sweet that it almost overshadowed the fennel and chocolate, but the flavors made for a great, visually striking and sweet botanical trio -- one that I hadn't tried before. I like forward to trying a berry + herb topping at home atop a chocolate panna cotta or chocolate mousse.

Moonstruck - Strawberries and Basil Sugar bar - July 3, 2015

Chocolate of the Day:

Moonstruck Chocolate Co.
Strawberries and Basil Sugar bark bar

Purchased from: Piazza's Fine Foods, Palo Alto, CA

Today was Day #10 of Chocolate and Botanicals Theme Week. I can't seem to get enough of this theme week that's been filled with examples of fruit, flowers and herb combinations with chocolate.

When I saw today's, visually stunning Strawberries and Basil Sugar bark bar from Moonstruck Chocolate Co. (Portland, OR) at a local supermarket, I knew I'd be hanging out in botanical land for a few days longer.

The carefully arranged topping of rose-colored, freeze-dried strawberry slices and green basil-infused sugar crystals looked, at first glance, like dried peas and carrots, but not so! This unique and flavorful fruit and herb combination atop a base of dark chocolate was great for savoring and enjoying after dinner this evening.

Happy Valentines Day to all. If chocolate was part of your celebration, I hope you enjoyed it on this heart-shaped day.

These two Valentines Day Chocolates from Moonstruck Chocolate (Portland, OR) were the remaining two pieces in a 4-piece Valentines assortment.

The Chocolate Fudge Buttercream had a bittersweet dark exterior. Stenciled across the top was a pretty "with love" design in white lettering. Inside was an an almost fluffy, whipped creamy, chocolate buttercream center.

The second piece was a beautiful red heart filled with treasure. Inside the Hazelnut Praline Heart Truffle was a wonderful and complex blend of creamy, crunchy, sweet nutty textures and flavors.

Happy Valentines Day Eve all. These two sweetheart chocolates were made by Moonstruck Chocolate Co. (Portland, OR).

The Vintage Merlot Sea Salt Caramel was topped with a generous sprinkle of wine-colored sea salt crystals. Inside the gem encrusted milk chocolate covering was a soft, chewy caramel filling, creating an attractive blend of flavors and textures.

Not every chocolate confection needs to be dark and mysterious. Moonstruck's Pink Champagne Truffle was a pretty little thing, with a speckled, pale pink, heart-shaped shell. Inside was a bright layering of flavors -- white chocolate and then a burst of raspberry flavor.

Today was Day #7 of Chocolate and Hazelnut Theme Week, and Day #1 of Chocolate and Lemon Theme Week. (My theme weeks often overlap, especially when/if there is a promising seasonal or flavor triad like today.)

A red night shirt I used to have many years ago read: "Dear Santa, I want it all." Well, when it comes to chocolate, and many other things, I certainly have an abundant life indeed and feel very grateful this year to be able to celebrate this holiday season with friends and family.

The fresh-tasting, Dark Chocolate Rocky Road Santa Claus from Moonstruck Chocolate Co. (Portland, OR) was a perfect centerpiece for the lemon and hazelnut cookie plate to be left out near the fireplace for the Big Man to arrive this evening. It was loaded with little marshmallows and bits of pecan, as could be seen from the back view (pictured at right).

Happy Christmas Eve to all who celebrate. Hope you're all snug and warm.

Moonstruck - Milk Chocolate Sea Salt Toffee bar - June 8, 2014

Chocolate of the Day:

Moonstruck Chocolate Co.
Milk Chocolate Sea Salt Toffee bar
Good
Weight: .75 oz. (21.25 g.) / 3 oz. (85 g.) total bar
Calories: 120 calories in 1/4 bar
Cost: $3.99 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Sigona's Farmers Market, Palo Alto, CA

Today was Day #8 of Chocolate and Butter Theme Week. I added a bonus day to this week, due to the variety of chocolate items that contain butter.

One of the reasons I like toffee, caramel, and chocolate-covered caramel turtle/terrapin items -- all of which have been featured this past week -- is the butter. It adds a certain richness and balance, and a hint of salt helps to accentuate certain flavors in chocolate -- as long as there is not too much sugar and salt.

The Milk Chocolate Sea Salt Toffee bar from Moonstruck Chocolate Co. (Portland, OR) was made with 31% milk chocolate, so it was relatively sweet. Tiny bits of embedded toffee gave the bar a slight, soft crunch. Despite the toffee, sea salt, almonds, sugar and other ingredients, I could, happily, still make out a faint hint of butter, my favorite part. The bar was stamped with the message: "Share if you dare."

I also paired pieces of this bar with Jeni's Browned Butter Almond Brittle Ice Cream, and topped this sundae with fresh pecan halves. This combination was a bit rich for a hot day outside, but the sundae was in a very small glass. Small-sized and shotglass desserts are always easier to justify, if you feel you need to do so.

Moonstruck Chocolate - Tumbled Marcona Almonds - December 25, 2012

Chocolate of the Day:

Moonstruck Chocolate Co.
Dark Chocolate Tumbled Marcona Almonds
Good +
Weight: 5 oz. (142 g.) total bag/package
Calories: 725 calories (estimate) in 1 bag
Cost: $8.99 for 1 bag/package
Purchased from: Piazza's Fine Foods, Palo Alto, CA

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate this bright red and green holiday. Lights and colors help buoy us up during the gray days of winter.

In the living room, next to a bright red poinsettia plant (shown), were red and white stockings and mittens, and some Dark Chocolate Tumbled Marcona Almonds from Moonstruck Chocolatier (Portland, OR).

Marcona almonds are round, pudgy versions of more conventional almonds, frequently sauteed in oil and salted. They're buttery and delicate in flavor; and while the dark chocolate masked some of the subtle flavors in these almonds, they were quite tasty nonetheless. In fact, I managed to eat the whole bag without much trouble over the course of the day. Oh well, it was Christmas; and I felt very grateful for the abundance of good things and people in my life, including you dear readers.

Today was Day #4 of Chocolate and Almond Theme Week.

Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Bark
Good + - Very Good
Weight: 1 oz. (28 g.) / 3.56 oz. (101 g.) total tin
Calories: 150 calories
Cost: $9.99 total tin
Purchased from: Piazza's Fine Foods, in Palo Alto, CA

Today was Day #4 of Chocolate + Hearts and Flowers Theme Week.

Bark? Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Bark? OK, but only if it's decorated with red and pink heart shapes. I didn't really say that, but I could have. I broke off a piece of this bark bar from Moonstruck Chocolate Co. (Portland, OR), revealing a dense mesh of finely chopped hazelnut pieces.

And, to pack in more Oregon nut goodness, I paired this bark with a handful of dry roasted hazelnuts from Freddy Guys Hazelnuts (Monmouth, OR). Did you ever notice that hazelnuts are the most heart-shaped nut around?

2.) Pfeffernusse Spice Truffle

Calories: 75 calories
Cost: $16.99 for total 6-piece box
Purchased from: Draegers, in San Mateo, CA

The Maple Walnut Mousse Truffle was very attractive -- a perfect half walnut, perched on top of a molded chocolate, realistic-looking walnut half shell. And the maple filling blended well with both of these other elements.

I was less sure about the Pfeffernusse Spice Truffle. This acorn-shaped, all-chocolate truffle, was decorated with tiny chocolate pieces (dark vermicelli) at one end; and the chocolate filling was flavored with a spice combination that may have included cloves and black pepper. However, I am not familiar enough with Pfeffernusse items to judge whether it tasted "authentic" or not.

Today was Day #6 of Chocolate and Fall Flavors Theme Week.

Today was Day #5 of Chocolate and Fall Flavors Theme Week, and I tried two more chocolates from the Flavors of Fall Collection from Moonstruck Chocolatier/Moonstruck Chocolate Co. (based in Portland, OR).

I'm very fond of almonds in all forms, and I enjoyed Moonstruck's Harvest Almond Praline Truffle (multi-colored leaf shape). This chocolate combined a touch of almond praline, ground almonds and a whole roasted almond in the middle.

The Pecan Pie truffle sounded and looked like a tiny chocolate mousse on the outside. I was a little puzzled by the center, which was fluffy, white and sweet. I think I was expecting something resembling pecan pie filling.

Welcome to Day #4 of Chocolate and Fall Flavors Theme Week.

Time to celebrate and crack open a 6-piece box of "Flavors of Fall Collection" truffles. Both the Moonstruck Molasses Plantation Caramel (with orange decoration piped on top) and the Pumpkin Pie Truffle (front and center) were hearty, satisfying truffles. The Pumpkin Pie Truffle contained (and tasted like) real pumpkin (pie filling). I can't have pumpkin pie (no gluten for me), so this truffle was a fine post-Thanksgiving holiday bite-sized pie alternative.
