Calories: 120 calories in 1/2 package
Cost: $5.99 for 1 package
Purchased from: Farm Fresh, online order

Welcome to Day #15 of Chocolate, Berries & Cherries Theme Week.

What is a banana + cacao offering doing in a chocolate, berry and cherry themed week? Believe it or not, bananas are, technically, berries.

Today's "Monkey Brittle" with coconut, cacao, bananas and nuts was from Huggins Family Farms (Hood River, OR).

Aroma notes included: fruity (banana bread), nutty and light cocoa and coconut.

Texture: unique and very light-weight, thin crunchy cookie-like brittle. Think banana-bread-nut brownie wafers.

Flavor notes for these wafer-thin brittle pieces included: light cocoa, banana nut bread and subtle coconut.

I was surprised and delighted by the complexity ?? lightness? suitable as a quick meal (breakfast on the go) or a portable snack for a walk/hike... short list of authentic and organic ingredients (with no gums, preservatives or "natural flavors").

Maker's notes? "Coconuts, Cacao, Bananas, Nuts, Raisins, Sea Salt...& Absolutely Nothing Else."

Cacao Space - Uganda Semuliki Forest 75% with freeze-dried bananas (bar) - Aug. 20, 2024

Chocolate of the Day

Cacao Space
Uganda Semuliki Forest 75% with freeze-dried bananas (bar)
Good + - Good ++
Weight: 1.18 oz. (32.5 g.) / 2.36 oz. (65 g.) in total bar
Calories: 180 calories (estimate) in 1/2 bar
Cost: $9.00 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Cacao Space, online order

Welcome to Day #5 of Chocolate and Uganda Theme Week.

Today's Uganda Semuliki Forest 75% (bar) with freeze-dried bananas was from Cacao Space (Los Altos, CA). This local, small-batch chocolate maker offers single origin nib-to-bar chocolates, including several  with fruit, nut and other flavor inclusions.

Aroma and flavor notes for this single origin 75% dark chocolate bar included: dark chocolate, very faint molasses and herb, and sweet, light and fragrant banana. The banana pieces were a perfect (contrasting) pairing with the bold dark chocolate.

The dark chocolate itself has a bolder, roasted quality with very faint brown sugar/molasses, and faint fruit (berry, very faint banana) and very faint, fleeting warm spice/herb (black licorice, cinnamon).

I really liked the bananas used with this chocolate. It helped lighten and brighten the darker chocolate tasting experience.

Ingredients: "cacao nibs, organic coconut sugar" + freeze-dried bananas (pieces)

Allergen-related information: (None listed on package)

Central American Dark Chocolate Honduras Banana Bread - Oct. 13, 2021

Chocolate of the Day

(Homemade)
Central American Dark Chocolate Honduras Banana Bread
(Modified Honduran Banana Bread recipe)
Weight: 1.5 oz. (42.5 g.) serving
Calories: 165 calories (estimate) for 1 serving
Cost: $N/A - multiple items
Purchased from: N/A - multiple sources

Welcome to Day #10 of Chocolate and Central America Week(s), featuring chocolates made with cacao from Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

Today's homemade chocolate banana batter bread was based on a Honduran banana bread recipe. I added to this recipe: a blend of 70% cacao chocolate pieces (melted and stirred in) from the five different Central American countries mentioned above.

Aroma notes for this moist, dense bread included rich chocolate, banana (bread), with traces of warm spice and nut. The pecans provided a soft, nutty chew. (Especially fragrant right out of the oven.)

I omitted from this recipe any added sugar or added oils/butter. The 70% cacao chocolates, banana and coconut provided enough natural sweetness for my taste. Eggs, kefir and nuts provided satisfying levels of protein, fat and texture. And banana (flour and fruit), eggs and kefir contributed moisture and cohesion to this gluten-free version.)

Ingredients: Banana flour, (3) eggs, kefir (in lieu of sour cream/neufchatel cheese), banana (dehydrated slices, crushed), pieces of single origin dark chocolate bars (from 5 different Central American cacao-growing countries), pecans, coconut, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Allergen-related information: Contained dairy, tree nuts and eggs. (Gluten free, low sugar)

Theo and Philo Chocolate - Milk Chocolate with Turon 44% with Banana (bar) - Jan. 15, 2021

Chocolate of the Day

Theo and Philo Chocolate Factory
Milk Chocolate with Turon 44% with Banana (bar)
Good +
Weight: 1.59 oz. (45 g.) in 1 bar
Calories: 220 ?? calories (per label) in 1 bar
Cost: $6.25 (sale) for 1 bar
Purchased from: Bar and Cocoa, online order

Welcome to Day #11 of Chocolate and the Philippines Theme Week, and Day #1 of Chocolate and Banana Theme Week.

Today's Milk Chocolate Turon 44% (bar) was from Theo and Philo Artisan Chocolates/Chocolate Factory, based in Manila, the capital city of the Philippines.

This milk chocolate Turon* bar was flavored with "banana chips, crispy caramel and sesame seeds."

The initial aroma that arose from the freshly opened copper foil packaging was one of milk chocolate enhanced by a pleasant savory smell--with a very faint and fleeting cheese/fermented note that dissipated quickly, after the bar had been opened for a minute or so.

The milk chocolate was sweeter than the authentic, dried banana pieces with the occasional flourish of caramelized brown sugar. Sesame seeds added a bit of texture and seedy/slightly nutty flavor. Even though I've never had banana lumpia, I feel this bar conveyed the essence of what I know about this dessert.

After tasting and reading ingredients lists on all Theo and Philo Chocolate bars this past week, it confirms my experience that chocolates with authentic, unadulterated, high-quality ingredients really do taste better. The lack of "natural flavors," preservatives, emulsifiers or lab-created extracts almost always goes hand-in-hand with a fuller, more enjoyable tasting experience.

Ingredients: sugar, cacao beans, milk powder, cocoa butter, dried bananas, butter, sesame seeds

*I thought today's "Turon" might be related to popular nougat confections from Southern Europe. Turron (Spain) or Torrone (Italy)--typically made with honey, sugar, egg whites and nuts (often almonds). Both are sweet dishes/confections.

However, this unique Filipino Turon bar was likely inspired by banana lumpia (lumpiang saging) a dessert one might find in the Philippines--made with thinly sliced, local bananas and brown sugar, and wrapped in a spring roll wrapper, and then fried.

Thank you Theo and Philo for enabling a virtual culinary trip to the Phillipines this week.

Legendary Foods - Chocolate Banana Flavored Peanut Spread - Sept. 20, 2019

Chocolate of the Day:

Legendary Foods LLC
Chocolate Banana Flavored Peanut Spread
Good
Weight: 1 oz. (28 g.) in total packet/sachet
Calories: 140 calories in 1 packet/sachet
Cost: $1.69 for 1 packet/sachet
Purchased from: Piazza's Fine Foods, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #3 of Chocolate and Banana Theme Week.

Today's sachet (packet) of Chocolate Banana Flavored Peanut Spread was from Legendary Foods LLC (Pasadena, CA). The convenient single-serving packaging made it convenient to carry it and eat it with a meal on the go or as an outdoor adventure snack.

The keto-friendly and gluten free spread had a slightly artificially sweet banana aroma and flavor (perhaps due to the "natural flavors"* or alternative sweeteners added?). Banana can be a tricky flavor to infuse into foods and sweets.

The spread's consistency, like every other nut butter-like spreads in small packets we've tasted, was a combination of nut butter solids and oil. So do massage the small packet gently between your fingers first before opening it, to avoid having to sponge oil drips out of your clothing.

Otherwise, the peanut spread had authentic peanut flavor, a faint cocoa note, and nut butter melt and consistency. Extra points to the company for no sugar, and using relatively natural sugar substitutes (erythritol and stevia)* to add some sweetness. (A single serving had 3 net carbs.)

*Ingredients: Peanuts, Erythritol. Contains less than 2% of the following: cocoa, dried bananas, cocoa butter, natural flavors, sea salt, sunflower lecithin, palm oil, steviol glycosides (stevia). (The company sources ingredients without GMOs.)

Clif Bar - Banana Chocolate Peanut Butter - Nut Butter Filled bar - Sept. 18, 2019

Chocolate of the Day:

Nut Butter Filled - Banana Chocolate Peanut Butter bar
Good
Weight: 1.76 oz. (50 g.) in 1 bar
Calories: 220 calories in 1 bar
Cost: $2.49 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Piazza's Fine Foods, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #2 of Chocolate and Banana Theme Week.

Today's Nut Butter Filled Banana Chocolate Peanut Butter bar was from Clif Bar (Emeryville, CA)*, a family and employee-owned company based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

This organic bar had a fresh baked banana bread aroma, which showed up in the flavor (and finish). And it had a soft, chewy texture and a smooth chocolate nut (peanut) butter filling.

Clif Bar (co-)founder Gary Erickson's idea(s) for a better energy bar, and the first Clif Bar, were conceived in the early 1990s.

Clif Bar now offers a variety of bars (including a family of nut butter filled bars), in the ever-evolving, individually-packaged energy/trail/protein/snack bar category—designed for busy, on-the-go lives, and for those who want a sturdy, non-perishable snack to take on outdoor adventures.

I've had a life-long love for hiking, skiing and long-distance adventures, and appreciate all the progress that's been made in this category.

While home built snacks (like gorp) and trail "bars" last century were great. (You knew exactly what was in them and you could customize your own blend.) However, they required extra shopping and planning and the produce or plastic bags they were stuffed in, or taped up with, often leaked—or (worse) oozed—staining one's backpack and attracting unwanted wildlife out on the trail.

Thankfully, individually-wrapped commercially available bars have continued to improve. Early pressed bars made were often overly sweet, over-processed, and contained many artificial ingredients. Clif Bar has kept up with, and sometimes led, the field with their priorities and choices around health and wellness.

*This bar was made in Canada, and contained peanuts, fair trade chocolate, oats and "natural flavors."  It may contain traces of tree nuts, milk, wheat and soy.

Welcome to Day #3 of Chocolate and Banana Theme Week.

It's spring; and it's getting warmer by the day. After a few hot days, thoughts turn to cold chocolate desserts, such as today's Dark Chocolate Covered Bananas from Sprouts Farmers Market (Phoenix, AZ).

Slices of real, frozen banana were covered in dark chocolate; and the dark chocolate shell had just the right firmness. It wasn't so flimsy that chocolate shards broke off in your lap (or on your new shirt). But it wasn't too thick either.
These refreshing and rich bites could be enjoyed a la carte—or, if you're feeling fancy, paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a dash of cinnamon and a drizzle of honey and some toasted walnuts.

Bare Foods - Cocoa Banana Chips - April 26, 2017

Baked Crunchy Cocoa Banana Chips

Purchased from: Safeway, Palo Alto, CA

Fruits blend so successfully with chocolate that most fruits merit their own chocolate theme week.* And bananas certainly deserve to be near the top of the list as they are, by many estimates, the most popular fruit in the world.

Welcome to the first day of Chocolate and Banana Theme Week.

Naturally Bare Co. (San Francisco, CA) offers a large lineup of healthy, simple snacks, including three flavors of banana chips. Today's two-ingredient Cocoa Banana Chips (bananas, organic unsweetened cocoa) had no added sugar and were, light, baked, crunchy, fat free and gluten free.

When I lightly shook the unopened bag, these cocoa-colored chips made a sound like impossibly weightless, other-worldly glass shards in the package. However, they were very edible and tasty.

The chips were refreshingly natural and light, with light cocoa flavor. The primary taste and texture, once gently reconstituted in your mouth, was one of natural banana.

*Over the last 10+ years Chocolate Banquet has featured many chocolate theme weeks dedicated to chocolate and...cherries, oranges, berries, pomegranates, limes, strawberries, lemons, raspberries, blueberries, figs, bananas, mangos, grapes/raisins, goji berries, and a few fruit salad and fruit cocktail theme weeks.

Purchased from: Piazza's Fine Foods, Palo Alto, CA

Welcome to Day #7 of Chocolate and Banana Theme Week.

I'm ending Banana Week with two more frozen desserts—the first is from the Eastern U.S., and tomorrow's (bonus Day #8 entry) hails from the West.

Today's Caramelized Banana Chip Gelato "Italian Style Dessert" was from Haagen-Dazs (a division of Nestle Ice Cream, that originated in the Bronx, NY).

I couldn't resist piling this gelato atop fresh banana slices. I was hoping to create an homage to a large exotic looking (maroon-colored) banana flower. Instead it looked like a tribute to cartoon character Marge Simpson* and her famous, if slightly askew, beehive hairdo.

No matter. This caramelized banana gelato with chocolate chips was sweet, creamy and delicious with a hint of bananas foster** flavor. You could serve this gelato with sauteed or flambeed banana slices and whipped cream if you wish; however, I'd suggest eating it unembellished. You don't really need chocolate sauce and toppings here. And, the chocolate chips provide periodic bursts of chocolate flavor already.

---0---0---0---0---

*Marge Simpson is the lovable wife of cartoon protagonist Homer Simpson, on the long-running television cartoon series, The Simpsons, that debuted in 1989. Marge sports a very tall tower of beehive-style hair, that sometimes seems to lean to one side.

**Bananas Foster is a dessert—made with bananas, vanilla ice cream, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and dark rum—that became famous at Brennan's Restaurant in New Orleans, LA. This was a city that served as a destination port for bananas coming into the U.S. in that time, and perhaps an example of taking advantage of "local" ingredients. I saw this dish flamboyantly prepared at a restaurant many years ago in the southeastern U.S.; and my fascination grew as the server lit it on fire.

Banana Pops!

Weight: 1 oz. (28.2 g.) / 4 oz. (113 g.) total box
Calories: 180 calories for 2 pieces/1 banana
Cost: $1.25 total box/kit
Purchased from: Raley's, in Newark, CA

Today was Day #7 of Chocolate and Banana Theme Week. Not coincidentally, my Bananagrams (crossword-style word) game letter tiles suggested another chocolate + banana combination.

And today's chocolate choice was: a Freeze 'n Dip chocolate flavored coating kit from Concord Foods (Brockton, MA).

The Banana Pops! kit provided something between a ready-to-eat chocolate items and a make-it-from-scratch effort. I provided the fresh banana, that I peeled and cut in half first. I then impaled each banana half on a popsicle stick (included in the box).

After freezing the bananas on sticks for an hour, I took them out and dipped them slowly in the chocolate coating that I'd put in a glass.

The chocolate coating -- made with coconut and soybean oil, sugar, cocoa, and a dash of vanilla -- was slowly transformed from a thick chocolatey sauce dunk to a velvety solid coat, as the frosty fruit cooled it down.

The resulting banana and chocolate treats were quite tasty. The Banana Pops! kit made 8 pops total from 4 bananas.

Today I enjoyed a bowl of Nature's Path Organic, Sunrise Crunchy Maple (gluten free) cereal -- that contained whole grains: corn, quinoa, brown rice (flour) and buckwheat. I topped this small bowl with TruMoo 1 percent lowfat chocolate milk (distributed by Dean Foods Company, Dallas, TX). After adding slices of fresh banana, I was ready to take on the world -- or at least I was fueled for an early wake-up and start time this morning.

Today was Day #6 of Chocolate and Rice Theme Week, and Day #1 of Chocolate and Bananas Theme Week.

Calories: 130 calories in 1 serving (4 pieces)
Cost: $1.99 total package
Purchased from: Trader Joe's, in Mountain View, CA

Deep in the jungle where cacao and bananas are grown lurks a... sock monkey. Well, outside of said monkey being featured on a box of Trader Joe's "Gone Bananas!...one piece at a time" (chocolate covered frozen banana slices) I'm not sure that's true; but it's fun to imagine.

Hats off to Trader Joe's once again for providing quality chocolate items at a reasonable price. These banana slices (product of Thailand) are to be enjoyed frozen (and not defrosted) -- per the sock monkey's instructions. I agree with the monkey; these are best served right out of the box.

Please Note: I added the nuts in the photo (at right) as a garnish. These banana slices do not contain nuts.

Oh my goodness, after double checking my chocolate spreadsheet tracker (yes, I do have one), I realized I might have eaten a similar item from Trader Joe's before (another Gone Bananas! item). So, to prevent a possible repeat, I sampled an "My Goodness Bar" (a 61% bittersweet chocolate bar with honey roasted peanuts and toasted coconut) from Chocolate Visions (based in Scotts Valley, CA). It was very good as well.

Calories: 59 calories (estimate)
Cost: $34.00 box of 18 pcs. (+ any shipping, handling)
Purchased from: fleurir, via foodzie.com

Today was Day #4 of Chocolate and Peanut Theme Week. This Peanut Butter, Banana chocolate from fleurir (Wash., D.C.) had layers of peanut butter and banana ganache, which generally adds to the tasting experience.

It's very difficult to bring peanuts and chocolate together without my imagination wandering off to bananas, and then monkeys. Monkeys may not eat processed chocolate, but they do eat (and help disperse the seeds) of the cacao fruit that grows in Latin American countries. So, maybe we owe monkeys a small debt of gratitude for helping spread and bring to the attention of man this fruit with the lovely seeds. So, I'm incorporating a little monkey thank you during the rest of this chocolate and peanut theme week.

Calories: 263 calories in 1/2 bar
Cost: $5.99 total bar
Purchased from: Z. Cioccolato, in San Francisco, CA

I have to admire the Swiss for their wonderful, smooth milk chocolate. Camille Bloch - "Mon Chocolat Suisse" -- is no exception. Their milk chocolate bar with thick liquid Kirsch (cherry liqueur) filling was adult candy bar good.

I ate a few squares of this 8-square bar. Each square included a dome in the center where the Kirsch filling was housed. Half of the Kirsch bar was broken carefully in into bits and incorporated into a batch of gluten-free banana, cherry, chocolate chunk muffins. I used King Arthur Flour's Gluten Free Muffin Mix (scented with nutmeg) as the base mix, and added in chopped fresh cherries, banana, and some cinnamon and other spices.

Today was Day #6 of Chocolate, Banana and Cherry Theme Week.

Purchased from: Chocolate Momotombo booth at Luxury Chocolate Salon, held at Fort Mason, San Francisco, CA

These unique, refrigerated chocolate balls (individually wrapped in gold paper) were infused with bananas and a hint of whiskey. The almost chewy texture would also make these chocolates a delicious accompaniment to fresh banana ice cream or other related dessert.  I hope that Chocolate Momotombo founder, Carlos Mann, finds a U.S. distributor soon, so more people can enjoy these.

Note: the chocolates pictured above in the open, nine-piece box are a combination of Banana Whiskey Chocolates and Mani (peanut) chocolates rolled in sesame seeds.

Today was Day #7 of Create Your Own Chocolate Theme Week (although there will be more of these in the future), and Day #1 of Chocolate and Monkey Theme Week.

Monkeys, you may ask? And my answer would be, why not? The Golden Monkey Bar that I created using the chocri online ordering system was a dark chocolate (64% cacao) bar with banana chips, cinnamon, real gold flakes, mini bananas, and peanut butter drops. The results: a fun-to-eat, festive-looking bar.

I'm not sure monkeys should eat chocolate, but our monkey friend (pictured below) seemed to like the idea.

Chocolate Milkshake Day isn't until tomorrow (Sept. 12). However, the local Peninsula Creamery restaurant/diner is famous for their milkshakes. (Many years ago they even made and sold their own ice cream.) I probably mixed too many flavors together in this shake. But, it was still good, after a long walk.

As many of you know, I sometimes group related chocolate items into theme weeks on this blog. Today was Day #2 of Chocolate Beverage Theme Week 2009.

These frozen bananas are a good value. Also, 160 calories for one serving of a frozen dessert is not bad if you are trying to watch your weight.
