Today was the first day of Chocolates of Northern Yorkshire Week.

My cousin and his family from the U.K. were visiting California and hand carried a lovely assortment chocolates from this region of Northern England. A special thank you Wendy Pegram, a former professional chocolate taster. It's not easy to travel with chocolates in the summer; not only is there the temptation to eat them, but they also melt easily in hot weather.

Wendy also reminded me years ago about the long history of chocolate-making this area dating back to the 1800s. In the 1950s, chocolate manufacturing and the railways were the major industries in the York area. Companies have included Nestle York (aka Nestle Rowntrees). Yorkie bars originated here. KitKat bars are made here; Terry's (now part of Kraft) used to make Chocolate Oranges here until 2005. No surprise then that some of this confectionery expertise popped up with smaller companies in Northern Yorkshire (the county where York is located).

Sugar Mouse Luxury Confectionery (York, North Yorkshire, U.K.) is one such sweet shop. Their pieces of chocolate covered Lemon Peel were full of natural lemon flavor; and the peels had just the right amount of tart, chewy sweetness, balanced perfectly with the dark chocolate.
