NewTree - Orange Pearls - April 5, 2014

Chocolate of the Day:

NewTree
Orange Pearls (Perles D'Orange)
Good
Weight: .88 oz. (25 g.) in one package
Calories: 97 calories (estimate) in 1 package
Cost: $2.99 for 1 package/pouch
Purchased from: Draeger's Market, San Mateo, CA

Today was Day #5 of Chocolate and Orange Theme Week.

These authentic-tasting Orange Pearls from NewTree (San Anselmo, CA/Belgium) were enrobed in Belgian 66% cacao Organic dark chocolate (sourced from Dominican Republic, Peru).

The bite-sized confections were all about the fruit, and less about the chocolate. (NewTree also offers an orange milk chocolate bar and a dark chocolate orange spread if you'd like more chocolate flavor.)

Made with Organic and Fair Trade* ingredients, these Orange Pearls tasted like natural fruit "gummy" candy. Orange juice concentrate, apple, grape, and lemon fruit flavors gave these chewy little jewels a tart-sweet sparkle.

This item was packaged as a conveniently portable snack. The small, resealable NewTree pouch contained about 17 pieces, and the whole package was slightly less than 100 calories.

*NewTree works with FairTrade International to certify cacao and raw ingredients.

Today was Day #3 of Chocolate and Orange Theme Week.

These smooth, dark chocolate domes from Hedonist Artisan Chocolates (Rochester, NY) were loaded with flavorful bits of Italian candied orange peel. The orange taste and texture was well balanced with the dark chocolate.

Hedonist Artisan Chocolate Interview

Today's Orange Peel chocolate was part of a Hedonist Fruit and Nut Clusters Assortment box. (A Cranberry Pecan chocolate from this box was featured last week.) I've enjoyed Hedonist flavors so much, I wanted to find out more.

Where does Hedonist Artisan Chocolates get their inspiration for all their great flavors? I recently had a chance to put this question and others to the company. Qs and As (Answers) from Head Chocolatier and Ice Cream Maker, Nathaniel Mich, appear below.

Q: Where does Hedonist get their inspiration for their flavors?

A: We get our inspirations from all over the place. Sometimes, they're based on foods that we love to cook with in other settings (like Porcini Thyme). Sometimes our customers suggest flavors, or it's whatever's fresh at the farmer's market (especially our ice cream shop). We like to have seasonally appropriate flavors as well. Many of our confections came out of designing chocolates to pair with local wines and beer. And, sometimes, flavors come to us in dreams (no joke).

Q: Tell us more about Hedonist's Fruit and Nut Collection?

A: The Fruit and Nut Collection is one of our original collections, dating (back) to the first days of the shop. The owner, Jennifer Posey, was inspired by the platters of dried fruit and nuts that her parents and grandparents would serve when she was a child in southern California. We wanted to create something that was dairy free, and the molded fruit/nut cluster(s) are visually very striking.

Q: Do you also use local ingredients, flavors?

A: Upstate New York is one of the best agricultural regions of the country, and Rochester, NY, has a rapidly growing craft and artisanal food scene. Consequently, we work extensively with other local producers, as we build a network of small businesses based on collaboration rather than competition. We use local wine, beer, coffee, bread, honey, fruit, dairy and cheese.

Partners include Ravines Winery, Hunt Country Winery, Casa Larga Winery, Bully Hill Winery, Women's Coffee Connection, Rohrbach's Beer, Roc Brewing Co., Black Button Distilling, Hurd Orchards, The Little Bleu Cheese Shop, Lively Run Goat Dairy, Pittsford Farms Dairy, and Davis Honey Farms. These ingredients are among the primary animating forces of our chocolate and ice cream.

Q: Anything else about your company that you'd like to share with ChocolateBanquet?

A: I really love the connection that the handmade food forms between and among people. Our customers recognize that we put our hearts and souls into these confections, and it builds an enduring bond that goes beyond the chocolate. Really, what we're doing isn't growing a customer base, it's building a family.

We do a lot of customer education. First it was centered around just teaching people what it meant to be artisanal and to be Hedonists, and why those were important things to bring to your food. Now we focus a lot on the next steps for chocolate, especially wine/beer/coffee, etc. pairings and entertaining with chocolate. As we've grown, our customers have grown with us, too, and there's an increased willingness on their part to try our new, funky and experimental flavors.

Thank you to Trevor and Nathaniel for this peek inside the flavors and creative process at Hedonist Artisan Chocolates. It's working...The proof is in the chocolate.

Today's Dark Sweet Orange, button/dome-shaped, raw chocolate from Love Bites Raw Confections (Thousand Oaks, CA) was part of an assortment container I received as a gift from the L.A. area. (Thank you Katy!)

This dark beauty was infused with natural tasting orange oil and was quite good, probably my favorite of the four pieces shown at right.

This was Day #2 of Chocolate and Orange Theme Week.

Odwalla Bars, Cream Sandwich - April 1, 2014

Chocolate(s) of the Day:

Odwalla
Chocolate Chip Peanut protein bar
Good
Weight: 2 oz. (56 g.) in 1 bar
Calories: 230 calories in 1 bar
Cost: $1.49 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Piazza's Fine Foods, Palo Alto, CA

Today we say goodbye to chocolate and cranberries and welcome Day #1 of Chocolate and Orange Theme Week -- with two different items and combinations.

Odwalla Protein Bars

Odwalla offers a line of reasonably priced protein bars, including today's Chocolate Chip Peanut bar. The peanut butter flavor and smooth, nut butter texture drew me in and provided satisfying taste.

I paired this Chocolate Chip Peanut bar with an Odwalla Orange Cranberry "nourishing" bar. The two went reasonably well together. I also took part of the Orange Cranberry bar and incorporated pieces of it into an ice cream sandwich.

Cream Ice Cream Sandwich

Berkeley, CA - based "Cream" has become a popular local cookie and ice cream sandwich shop chain in the San Francisco Bay Area in the last few years.

I visited the Cream San Jose location and bought two gluten-free chocolate chip walnut cookies to take home to make my own ice cream sandwich.

For the filling I mixed vanilla ice cream with bits of Odwalla Orange Cranberry Bar, and a splash of orange and tea flavored Qi liqueur from St. George Spirits (Alameda, CA). The resulting cookie and ice cream sandwich was sweet and delicious, and very filling.

Zing - Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Bar - March 31, 2014

Chocolate of the Day:

Zing
Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Bar
Good
Weight: 1.76 oz. (50 g.) in 1 bar
Calories: 210 calories for 1 bar
Cost: $2.49 for 1 bar
Purchased from: Piazza's Fine Foods, Palo Alto, CA

Today was Day #9 of Chocolate and Cranberry Theme Week. A secondary suffix to this theme has been "... and Oats/Oatmeal." In keeping with that fact, I paired two Certified Gluten-Free and Soy Free items from Zing Bars (Seattle, WA): an Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Bar and a Cashew Cranberry Orange Bar.

These held together nicely, with the help of cashew nut butter -- the #1 ingredient listed for both bars. (Zing also makes bars with peanut butter.)

Each bar contained 10 grams of protein (from nuts, oats and seeds and whey protein/rice protein). Dark chocolate chips added tiny bursts of chocolate flavor in the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip bar. And, dried cranberries and Organic orange oil flavor gave the second bar a subtle, uplifting fruit zing.

Safeway - Almond Berry Medley - March 30, 2014

Chocolate of the Day:

Safeway
Almond Berry Medley Trail Mix
Good
Weight: 1/4 cup, 1.06 oz. (30 g.) / 14 oz. (397 g.) total package/bag
Calories: 150 calories in 1/4 cup serving
Cost: $ various
Purchased from: items 3 different Safeway stores

Today was Day #8 of Chocolate and Cranberry Theme Week. Once again, there were too many different chocolate items to fit into a conventional 7-day week.

The Almond Berry Medley Trail Mix from Safeway (Pleasanton, CA) had a good balance of sweet fruit (dried cranberries, blueberries), crunchy nuts (almonds) and chocolate covered soybeans.

I also bought some dried cranberries, chocolate covered walnuts, and a bag of Safeway Select Cranberry A-Go-Go Trail Mix (with almonds, cranberries and cashews), for a cranberry trail mix banquet for lunch today.
