These peel-and-eat cacao beans from Ah Cacao (Mexico) were a wonderful, unsweetened treat for someone who enjoys the intense taste of chocolate or cacao nibs. I found these whole beans to be richer tasting than the ground pieces, or cacao nibs -- which would be the next step in the chocolate-manufacturing process.
Crunching on a few of these beans was as close to the source as I've gotten, since tasting cacao fruit during a visit to a farm in Costa Rica a few years ago. I think more cacao field trips are in order. Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. with a climate suitable for growing cacao trees that I know of; so that might be my next chocolate vacation destination.
